Class 3 weekly update

English – This week the children have been looking at features of persuasive texts.  They started by looking at some examples of texts and found features such as rhetorical questions, adjectives and emotive language and discussed this with their English buddy.  They used these features to then create a piece of persuasive writing of their own to persuade somebody to try their own amazing Easter egg!

In Read, write, inc the green group read the story ‘Puppets’ and discussed/wrote about different types of puppets.  The yellow group read the story ‘Duckchick’ and discussed/wrote about how mama hen got a shock when one of her eggs hatched as a duck!  The red and blue groups have been identifying progressive forms of verbs in the past and present tense.  They looked at a range of sentences and identified the difference between the types of sentences.  PRESENT PROGRESSIVE – A sentence that uses is/are and then a verb with the ‘ing’ suffix.  For example, My friends are jumping.  PAST PROGRESSIVE – A sentence that uses was/were and then a verb with the ‘ing’ suffix.  For example, We were making friendship bracelets all afternoon.

Maths – The children have been focusing on fractions this week.  They have been finding half of numbers, e.g. 1/2 of 12 and using equipment such as a part whole model and counters to help them divide numbers equally by 2.  Then they were recognising and finding a quarter of shapes and numbers.  They used further equipment such as smarties and cake to help them divide shapes/numbers by 3 equal parts.

Science – They started their new unit ‘Living things and their habitats’.  The children were introduced to the common characteristics shared by all living things – MRS GREN (Movement, Respiration, Sense, Growth, Reproduce, Excrete, Nutrition).  They all joined in well with discussion about each of these features and understanding what each one meant.  We even did some actions to help us remember each one!

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 10th May. 03.05.19

Thank you everyone for your help with bringing in lots of plastics and pebbles….the children are going to have lots of fun with  our upcoming art projects!

Have a lovely weekend.

Class 3 weekly update

This week the children have been working really hard to complete end of term assessments in reading, writing and maths.  Well done Class 3!

In maths they have also been introduced to the concept of symmetry.  They used a range of practical resources to enable them to understand the concept of shapes being halved on their vertical line of symmetry, such as paper folding.  They worked practically to fold a range of 2D shapes to find a vertical and horizontal line of symmetry.  They also identified shapes with incorrect lines of symmetry and explained why.  Then they completed drawing a shape using a line of symmetry and labelled the lines of symmetry.

In English they have been planning and writing a set of instructions.  They were asked to include the following features in their work: a list of ingredients, time conjunctions (e.g. firstly), imperative verbs (e.g. cut, put) and adverbs (e.g. carefully).  The children all worked hard with their independent written pieces of work.

In DT the children have been working on the project ‘puppets’ all this week.  They have looked at different types of puppets and described their features; made a finger puppet; practised their sewing skills (running stitch and over stitch); designed an Easter themed hand puppet and then made their own puppet.  They have had lots of fun making their puppet and adding all the features using a range of coloured felts and materials.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 3rd May  spellings 12.4.19

The next spellings test will be a revision of spelling patterns they have looked at over the Spring term.  They will be tested on the same amount of spellings in their group. Please can children write at least five sentences using a selection of spellings of their own choice from the Spring term in their spelling test books.

Holiday homework – Please can children bring in a large pebble and any plastic items (e.g. milk bottle tops, bottles, bags) for the first week back.  These will be for our upcoming art projects linked to our new topic work.  This will be revealed next term!

We hope you have a very happy Easter and a much deserved rest!

Class 3 weekly update

English – At the start of the week the children edited and improved a set of instructions about how to make a pizza.  They were asked to include the following features: time conjunctions (e.g. Firstly…), adverbs (e.g. carefully) and check for spelling and punctuation errors.

In read, write, inc the blue group have been reading ‘Jay’s clay pot’ and writing a short explanation text about how to make a clay pot.  The red group have been reading ‘The poor goose’ and writing about winning a race from one of the other character’s point of view.  The rest of the class have been focusing on using contractions – e.g. wouldn’t, shouldn’t, can’t, don’t….They have been matching words with their contraction form and using these words in their own sentences.

Maths – In maths we have started to look at fractions.  The children started by finding two equal parts of shapes and a group of objects, then they were asked if they could find more than one way of making equal groups (e.g. using 12 bears they found 2 groups of 6, 3 groups of 4, 4 groups of 3 and so on).  They demonstrated good use of number/multiplication knowledge to help them find groups of equal numbers.  They were then introduced to the fraction ‘half’ (1/2) and found half of a range of shapes and group of objects and explain how they knew this.

Science – This week the children worked in groups to find out ‘Which fabric was the stretchiest?’  They tested a range of fabrics and discussed how they would ensure their experiment would he kept a fair test (e.g. all fabric to measure the same length, stretch from the same point – 0cm).  They then stretched each fabric to see which one stretched the most and compared them at the end of the lesson.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 12th April.   05.04.19

Please write at least three sentences into spellings books using the focus for this week.

Well done Class 3 for a fantastic performance in the celebration assembly this morning!  They all enjoyed performing the song and we hope you enjoyed watching it too.  Thank you for all your help with providing costumes for them – they all looked amazing!

Have a lovely weekend.

Class 3 weekly update

English – In English the children have been identifying features of instructions by looking at the layout (e.g. subheadings, numbered lists), imperative verbs and time conjunctions. They then wrote their own set of instructions, remembering to include all the features they looked at.

In Read, write, inc the green group have been reading a non-fiction book about ‘Hens’ and using the information in the book to write about how to look after hens and what they do.  The yellow group have been reading a non-fiction book called ‘Jim’s house in 1874’ and using the information to write about houses in the past compared to houses today.  Red and blue group have been working independently looking at and using apostrophes to mark where letters are missing in spellings (contractions).  They have changed two words into one using the apostrophe (e.g. can not = can’t).  They have also been using these words in their own sentences.

Maths – This week we have finding odd and even numbers and dividing numbers by 5 and 10 using the 5 and 10 times table to find the answer more efficiently.  For example 5 x 10 = 50 / 50 ÷ 10 = 5.

Science – The children have been investigating how strong different types of paper are.  They tested a range of papers to find out how much weight they took until they broke.  They all worked well in groups to carry out the investigation and shared lots of good ideas to include in their conclusion, including looking at which papers were thick/ thin and strong/weak.

Spellings- To be tested on Friday 5th April.   29.03.19

Please can children write at least 3 sentences in their spellings books using the spelling focus words.

The children have also been practising for the celebration assembly next week and they all sound fantastic!  Thank you for all your help with learning the song at home.  A letter went home yesterday about what costume they will need.  Thursday 28th March 2019

We welcome Miss Francis into class 3 this week, who will be with us until the end of the summer term.  Miss Francis is a PGCE student and will be working with the children  and teaching lessons during her time here.

Have a lovely weekend.

Class 3 weekly update

English – The children have been working independently to write a story based on the Great fire of London.  They used their plans from last week to write to ensure they included all their ideas.  They wrote some great stories, well done Class 3!

In Read, Write, Inc blue group have been reading ‘So cool!’ and writing about a cool day.  They discussed lots of ideas about their favourite days out including the beach, shopping, jump in and climbing wall.  The red group have been reading ‘Barker’ and writing a newspaper report about Barker the dog, showing how Mr Black’s feelings towards him change in the story.  The rest of the class have been working independently to improve their sentence work by using a range a sentence openers.  They played a game to use as many different types of starters then used this to help them write a short story.

Maths – This week we have been making equal groups by sharing and grouping, then dividing by 2.  The children have been using practical equipment to make groups and share out the objects equally and checking each group has the same amount.  They have also been writing division and multiplication number sentences to explain what their groups/drawings show.

Science – We have been doing some investigation work this week which the children enjoyed getting involved in.  They worked in groups to test how absorbent different types of paper were.  They discussed how they need to ensure they carry out a fair test and what factors they were changing.  Once they tested the different papers they recorded and discussed the results and explained why some were more absorbent than others.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 29th March.  22.03.19.

Sentences to be written in their spellings book please.

Have a lovely weekend.

Class 3 weekly update

English – At the start of the week the children were planning their own story.  They made notes on who the main character was, what they see / what they do in the story and how their story will end.  They had lots of interesting ideas for their stories and we are looking forward to reading them next week.

In Read, write, inc the green group have been reading ‘In the bath’ and writing about what they like and dislike about having a bath.  The yellow group have been reading ‘Jam tarts’ and writing their own shopping list.  The rest of the class have been working well independently improving their use of sentence starters in their writing.  They played a game in pairs to use a range of sentence openers, e.g. starting their sentences with a conjunction, noun, adjective, adverbs, feelings and similes.  Then they wrote a short story including a range of exciting sentence starters and interesting vocabulary.  They had lots of ideas first about their story and how they were going to link their ideas.

Maths – This week we have been focusing on multiplying numbers by 2, 5 and 10.  Many  of the children are now much more confident with these times tables from all their practise at home.  They have been using equipment such as counters to make groups of 2, 5 and 10 and solving problems by making different groups of these multiples and showing all their working out using drawings and number sentences.

Science – This week the children joined in with a discussion about how we can ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’.  They came up with lots of ideas about how we can do this to help our environment.  They also designed posters to explain to others how they can follow this principle.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 22nd March. 15.03.19

Please can children write at least 4 sentences in their spellings books each week using the spellings they have for that week.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Thomas and Miss Moran

Class 3 weekly update

English – This week the children have been using their plans from last week to start writing a newspaper report based on the Great Fire of London.  They have been including facts about what happened, an eye witness statement and using conjunctions and adverbs to improve their sentences.

In Read, Write, Inc blue group have been reading ‘Snow’ and writing about playing the snow.  Red group have been reading ‘A mouse in the house’ and writing instructions for how to look after a mouse.  Both groups have been remembering to include extra detail in their written work, including adjectives and conjunctions.  The rest of the class have been using words with the ‘ar’ sound to write sentences, then writing a phoneme spotter story using as many ‘ar’ words they have looked at this week.

Maths –  At the start of the week the children were problem solving by writing and drawing multiplication sentences to support their working out.  They have also been using arrays to see the relationship between multiplication facts and the difference between them, e.g. 5 x 2 and 2 x 5.  They have been solving further problems by using a group of objects (e.g. 8 counters) and finding as many arrays as possible they can make from these.

Science – This week we continued to look at where materials come from, if they are natural or man-made and finding out any other information.  We found out about wool, paper and glass.  The children were able to discuss previous knowledge about these materials aswell and we have had lots of interesting discussions about their uses.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 15th March

08.03.19

Class 3 had a wonderful day celebrating World Book Day yesterday.  Thank you so much for all your efforts with their costumes, they all looked great!  We started the day off sharing our favourite books and writing a book review.  Then the children were involved in a range of activities which they really enjoyed.  They made wooden spoon puppets of their favourite book character, bookmarks, character masks and designed a new front cover for their favourite book.  It was lovely hearing about their favourite books during the day.

Have a lovely weekend.

Class 3 weekly update

English – This week the children have been identifying features of a newspaper report by finding the facts, an eye witness statement and conjunctions.  They then used these features to help them plan their own newspaper report about the Great Fire of London, including a headline, facts, answering where/why/how/who/what questions and a quote about the events.

In Read, Write, Inc the green group have been reading ‘Billy the kid’ and have written descriptions about the troll in the story, thinking about describing it’s eyes, skin and feet using lots of interesting adjectives.  The yellow group have been reading ‘Hunt the tortoise’ and have written an invitation to a picnic, thinking carefully about including all the features discussed, e.g. who it’s to, where it is, when it is.  The rest of the class have been working independently revising the ‘ar’ sound in words and have written their own phoneme spotter story using as many ‘ar’ words as possible which they have looked at this week.

Maths – We have been adding equal groups together and writing a number sentence to describe what each groups shows (repeated addition).  The children have also been introduced to the multiplication symbol and have been writing further repeated addition and multiplication sentences to represent groups of objects.  They have also been solving multiplication problems using their knowledge of the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Science – We watched a range of short video clips about where different materials come from (wood, plastic, rock, metal and ceramics).  The children found out and discussed where materials come from, whether they are natural or man-made and found out additional information about the materials they have looked at.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 8th March.  01.03.19

World Book Day – Please can all children bring in their favourite book next Thursday (7th March) so we can share them in class.  We are looking forward to an exciting day of activities!

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Thomas & Miss Moran

Class 3 weekly update

English – In Read, Write, Inc this week the blue group have been reading ‘In the night’ and the red group have been reading ‘In the park’.  The rest of the class have been working independently to add the suffixes ‘er’ and ‘est’ to adjectives, e.g. strong/stronger/strongest.  They were reminded of the rules from last week of how to change the endings of words: words ending in y – change the y to an i then add er/est, words ending in e – knock off the e before adding er/est, words ending in a vowel and consonant – double the consonant before adding er/est.  They then used these words in their own sentences, ensuring they made sense.

Maths –  This week we have started a new unit, ‘multiplication and division’  The children have been recognising equal groups of objects and making equal groups of objects.  They have been explaining how different groups have been arranged and using drawings / repeated addition to support their working out.

Science – In science we have been looking at properties of materials.  The children used a simulation activity to test different materials by replicating what happens in real life.  They tested the materials to see if they were waterproof, flexible, strong and transparent.  They then found out and discussed which material is suitable for a series of items and why, e.g. windows are made out of glass because they are transparent and waterproof.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 1st March

15.02.19

Have a lovely half term and enjoy the rest!

Class 3 weekly update

English – This week in read, write, inc the green group have been reading the story ‘Red Ken’ and the yellow group have been reading ‘Look out!’  The rest of the class have been working independently to add the suffixes ‘er’ and ‘est’ to an adjective, e.g. short – shorter – shortest and using these in their own sentences to show comparisons.

Maths – In maths the children have been using their previous knowledge and understanding of addition and subtraction to apply this to solving two-step money problems.  They have all worked really hard to decide which operation to use in each problem, discuss their reasoning and show all their working out clearly.

The children have also carried out assessments in reading and mathematics this week and they have all worked really hard to demonstrate their understanding in these areas.  Well done!

Science – This week the children worked in groups to look at a range of properties of materials, e.g. rough, brittle, flexible and discussed what each one meant.  Some were trickier than others and we discussed these as a whole class.  They then found some examples of each type of property, e.g. a waterproof jacket, a transparent window.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 15th February
