Class 6 Update

English

This week the children looked at photographs of what it was like in the trenches during WWI.  They created some freeze frames to show different points in a soldier’s journey – going off to war, in the trenches and returning from battle.  They used photographs of their freeze frames as a starting point for writing newspaper reports this week.

Maths

The children have been working on decimal numbers this week and what happens when we multiply and divide by 10, 100 or 1000.

History

This week we examined what events led to the start of WWI.  The children worked in groups to present information about what happened to different countries that led to them becoming involved in the war.

Science

In Science this week we looked at blood circulation.  We studied a detailed picture of the heart, and found out the jobs of the veins, arteries and lungs in passing blood around our body and oxygenating it.  Next week, we will look more closely at what happens to blood as it is pumped through our lungs.

Art

The children continued with their Global Canvas art project.  Each group has created a final design of their artwork depicting an endangered species and worked out which materials they will need to construct their project.  Any donations of cardboard by next Monday would be much appreciated.

Weekly News 18.01.19

Sickness absence

If your child has been sick or had diarrhoea, please remember that they must not return to school until 48 hours after their last bout of sickness/diarrhoea. Please note there is no need for your child to be kept off school if they have just complained of a tummy ache and they are feeling ok otherwise.

Social media

We are aware that social media sites  e.g. Facebook are being used to post complaints and derogatory comments about matters concerning either our school or other parents associated with our school.  If you have an issue with anything within school, please do contact the school in the first instance because comments posted on social media can be misunderstood and detrimental to people’s wellbeing.

I am always happy and willing to speak to parents about any concerns and would request that you speak to me if you are unhappy about something regarding school.

Head lice

We have had several reports of head lice in school this week.  Please could you check your child’s hair and treat as necessary.  It would also be helpful if long hair could be tied up/plaited etc and please encourage your child not to take their hair down during the day and keep their hair up. I have been approached by parents who are understandably frustrated at having to repeatedly treat their child’s hair because they come home from school with head lice yet again.  Your support with this would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Class 3 weekly update

Hello and welcome back, we hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas and new year!  Thank you for all your kind Christmas gifts and cards from the children.

Class 3 have settled back well into the new term this week and have been starting their new topics in history and science. Our science topic is ‘Uses of everyday materials’ and the children worked in small groups to discuss and share their prior learning about this topic.  Our history topic is yet to be revealed by Miss Moran next week! The children looked at picture clues to help them think about what they might be learning…they had lots of interesting ideas!

Maths – We started a new topic on ‘Money’.  This week we have been looking at counting money in pence and pounds.  Many of the children have a great understanding of using money and this has helped them to work out different totals and solve reasoning and problem style questions.

English – The children started off the week by writing a recount about what they did over the holidays.  Then in Read, write, inc the green group have been reading ‘Elvis’ and the yellow group have been reading ‘Haircuts’.  The rest of the class have been focusing on forming nouns using the suffix ‘-ness’ (e.g. happiness, sadness, tiredness).  They have been using these words in their own sentences, as well as ensuring they add lots of detail and extend their sentences using adjectives and conjunctions.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 18th January 11.01.19

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Thomas & Miss Moran

Weekly news 11.01.19

The children seem to have settled back into school life well after the Christmas break. Our whole-school theme for this half-term is ‘new beginnings’ and the children offered some wonderful ideas in worship discussions this week. We have started to talk about the idea of ‘unity’ and how this is reflected in our school and children have suggested things which our school community could work on together e.g. looking after school property so that the school is a nice environment in which to learn.

Arthog

If you would like your child to take part in our annual visit to Arthog (Friday 17th to Monday 20th May 2019) please return the reply slip and deposit to the school office on Monday. We need to provide Arthog next week with the numbers attending.

Have a nice weekend.

Class 6 Update

English

This week we began our new novel study – “Ghost Soldier” by Theresa Breslin.  The children read the first chapter and created pieces of art work representing their interpretation of it.  They then used the ideas from Chapter 1 to write poetry using a range of poetic features.

Maths

This week we continued our work on fractions.  The children have worked on dividing fractions by whole numbers and on finding fractions of amounts.

History

We began our World War I topic this week by researching which countries were involved in the war and their alliances.  The children located the countries involved on a map of Europe.

Art

The children began work on a global canvas project.  In groups they began to design their interpretation of an endangered animal and how it could be saved.
