Class 5 weekly update

English

This week children have written narrative descriptions of Willie’s journey home to London. Their task was to recount the journey using present tense, which was quite a challenge, but their finished work was excellent. They are now desperate to read on to find out what happens once Willie is reunited with his Mum!

Maths

We started a new unit on statistics with our main focus this week on line graphs. Children have interpreted line graphs in a range of different contexts and created their own line graphs using given data. We will continue with our work on line graphs next week.

Science

The whole class have now shared their half-term homework on Sir Isaac Newton and we have built on their research by using different-shaped prisms to refract light in and around the classroom.

History

Whilst the Year 5s were enjoying the Languages Day at The Corbet on Friday, Year 6s continued to work on their Dig For Victory – inspired posters.

Class 5 Visit to the Imperial War Museum

Just a reminder that it is our visit to the Imperial War Museum at Manchester on Wednesday 20th which we are all very excited about!

Have  a lovely weekend.

Class 5 half-term homework

To be brought into School for Tuesday 5th June 2018

Your homework task for half-term is to research Sir Isaac Newton’s work on light. Newton was known for his work in several areas of science but I just want you to focus on his theories and findings about light.

You can present your information in any format of your choice e.g. written, using ICT, practical demonstration, etc.  You will be sharing your research with the rest of the class.

E Safety Evening for Year 6 Parents at The Corbet

The Corbet School are hosting an E Safety Parents’ Information Evening on 20th June with PC Crump. Please see attachments below for more information and also a message from The Corbet School.

“We are aware that many year 6 pupils ask their parents for a mobile phone once they start secondary school because of the bus journeys.  Therefore, we think it would be really good to encourage as many year 6 parents as possible to attend this evening in order to encourage safe practice from the outset.”

Class 5 update 18.05.18

Firstly, we would like to say a huge well done to all the Year 6s for their hard work this week and the way they approached the SATs.  Their positive attitude was wonderful to see and they should feel very proud of themselves – we certainly are!

Well done to the Year 5s for the independence they showed in their project work this week. They seem to have really enjoyed researching buy cialis in mexico their chosen topics and preparing their presentations to share with the Year 6s.

Please can children ensure that they have their PE kit in school all week from now on, as we will be starting to prepare for Sports Day and may be able to fit in extra PE sessions after the half term break.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Year 6 Revision activities – Purple Mash

Year 6 children can use the English Grammar online activities on Purple Mash (shown below), in preparation for SATs the week after next.

They can also use the online Maths activities to practise different maths skills including the four  operations of  addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  I have shown a few suggested activities below which are all ready-made games in 2Race and encourage quick recall of number facts. However, children can access any activities, which they find useful. If your child has forgotten their log in details, please let me know. Thank you.

Class 5 Weekly Update 27.04.18

English

The children have continued their novel study of Goodnight Mister Tom. Their task this week was to produce a public information leaflet for host families to explain how to care for an evacuee. We have focused on using standard English and cohesive devices, including adverbial phrases, conjuctions and pronouns, and Class 5 have worked hard to produce some excellent pieces of formal writing.  Our grammar, punctuation and spelling work has included dictation activities to practise using adverbial phrases e.g. as a result, in addition, and spelling Year 5/6 words.

Maths

In Maths this week, we have continued our work on the properties of shapes. Children have applied their knowledge of angles in a triangle to solving problems involving special triangles and quadrilaterals and have ended the week constructing shapes with given angles and dimensions. Year 6s have also looked at the radius and diameter of circles and practised using a compass to construct circles of given diameters.

Science

Children have worked in small groups to explore some of their questions and hypotheses about shadows such as what affects the length and size of a shadow. This allowed them to reinforce work on angles, when discussing how the angle of the light source in relation to the object affects the shadow produced. Next lesson we will start to look at reflections and refraction of light.

P.E.

Whilst the Year 5s were at swimming, Year 6s have practised different volleyball skills in small groups and they ended the session evaluating the skills shown by each group. They have also continued their tennis sessions with Mr Creffield.

R.E.

Children had an extended session with Mrs J this week to allow them time to discuss and explore the resurrection in more depth.  We are hoping to create a display of their work over the next few weeks, to showcase their ideas and achievements.

Year 6 Booster

Just a reminder that Year 6 Booster is running every Monday after school until 4:30 to help prepare children for the SATs in the middle of May. I have attached the presentation again from the Year 6 parent meeting last week.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Class 5 weekly update 16.03.18

English:

This week children have analysed the features of explanation texts and written their own explanation texts based on our novel Phoenix.  They have also completed reading assessments which we will be going through with them in class before the end of term.

Maths:

In Maths, children have been finding the volume of cubes, cuboids and highly-complex 3D shapes composed of several cubes/cuboids.  It has been wonderful to see the children’s progress during this unit of work and seeing them apply previous learning on  area and perimeter.  They have also completed assessments, which we have started to look through and will continue to work through some of the questions next week.

Science:

In Science this week, we carried out a simulation to show the phases of the Moon using children’s written plans from last week. Children then completed an independent piece of writing to explain to other children how to carry out the simulation, which reinforced our work in English on explanation texts.

Geography:

Children completed their analysis and research of capital cities in North America.  Next week we will start to make comparisons between specific areas in the UK and North America.

RE:

In RE this week, we started a new unit on Salvation. We discussed why the resurrection is so important to Christians and used an artwork freeze to revise the ‘big story.’

PE:

We have continued our gymnastics work using the apparatus and also made the most of the sunshine to do one PE session on ball skills outside.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.
