Class 2 Weekly Update 18/01/2019

The children in class 2 have been doing at least two nice things for each other every day this week. My favourite observation was one of the children sharpening his tables’ pencils with the exhaust hole of his new tractor sharpener.
In our English lessons the children have been using both adjectives and simple conjunctions in their RWI recording work. We are currently making sure that we are verbalising our words and sentences properly when we are both reading and writing in class. Our work buddies have been an essential part of this process offering support along the way. Our stories work has had lots of lovely discussions and ideas have been shared well when talking as a class. For our end of the week book study we have continued with the story Beegu where the children’s inference skills have really impressed us all. They have ordered the story up to a certain point and have made a prediction as to how they feel the story might end. The reason for their predictions was both well thought out and very imaginative.
In maths the children have continued with addition and subtraction. As a whole class warm up we have been focusing on number bonds to 10/20 and have used our rhymes to help along the way. 8 and 2-chicken poo (makes 10) seems to be their favourite for some reason. The children have been looking at adding on from certain numbers and solving problems involving this. They have worked practically and have tried their best to give as much reasoning as possible along the way. They have completed part whole models and have used equipment along the way to support them. They have also worked on finding number bonds. They have also used a mathematics platform on the iPads to co-inside with their work.
In music the children were reading simple music from the front of the class and playing their notes beautifully together with Mrs Tan, a real breakthrough for them all.
This week the children have got in role as the Time Team for our new history topic and I thought it would be a good idea to test out my new metal detector in the school grounds. Well we were in for a surprise! They set off together taking it in turns with the detector and trowel. After the odd bleep for can ring pulls the detector started to frantically bleep on a mound of soil and rubble by one of the hedges. After being unearthed we discovered an old, heavy, cold and dirty tin box. Nobody could believe their eyes as we carefully brought it back into the classroom. Upon opening it we discovered that it was a time capsule full of old possessions. To our surprise we also found a letter addressed from a girl called Mary aged 6 who was from Bicton Village in the year 1870. She wanted somebody from the future to find out about both her and her parents. We investigated the items she had placed in the box which sparked some ingenious ideas as to what they were and what they were used for. One of the children thought it would be a good idea to put the date on her letter into Google. We then found out that Mary was from The Victorian times and we can’t wait to find out more…
In PE the children now have Embrace teaching hockey on Fridays which they are all really enjoying. On Mondays they have also games with Mr Sudlow. Once again I would like to remind you that your child needs outdoor trainers for PE this term.
Spellings have gone home tonight and there will be homework next week for the new term. Homework will be sent a little more frequently with it being in our second term. If you require more activity materials for your child at home please do not hesitate to come and see me.
We have a Class 2 trip booked for Blists Hill linked to our new history topic. The letter has already been sent out, so please could you return them as soon as you can. If you require another you will be able to get one from the office.
Have a lovely weekend together and see you on Monday.
Mr Mavin

Class 3 weekly update

English –   This week the children started to read ‘Toby and the great fire of London’.  They worked in groups and acted out what they thought the character Toby might see as he walked through the streets of London in 1666.  They then used this work to help them write an information text by describing what jobs were like in the past and using subheadings and conjunctions to separate and extend their ideas.

In Read, Write, Inc the blue group have been reading ‘Sanjay stays in bed’ and the red group have been reading ‘Grow your own radishes’.  The rest of the class have been working independently forming nouns by using the suffix -ness, e.g. kindness, happiness, lonliness.  They have been changing words and then using them in their own sentences, remembering to try and use lots of detail and extend their ideas.

Maths – In maths we have been continuing working with money.  The children have been counting money using notes and coins and selecting the correct money to match totals given.  They have all tried really hard with this and it has really helped with them starting to learn their 2, 5 and 10 times tables to help them work out totals more efficiently.  Thank you for your support with this.

Science – We have been identifying where different materials are used in our homes.  The children recorded examples of materials made from wood, paper, fabric, glass, rock, metal, plastic and ceramics.

Class 6 Update

English

This week the children looked at photographs of what it was like in the trenches during WWI.  They created some freeze frames to show different points in a soldier’s journey – going off to war, in the trenches and returning from battle.  They used photographs of their freeze frames as a starting point for writing newspaper reports this week.

Maths

The children have been working on decimal numbers this week and what happens when we multiply and divide by 10, 100 or 1000.

History

This week we examined what events led to the start of WWI.  The children worked in groups to present information about what happened to different countries that led to them becoming involved in the war.

Science

In Science this week we looked at blood circulation.  We studied a detailed picture of the heart, and found out the jobs of the veins, arteries and lungs in passing blood around our body and oxygenating it.  Next week, we will look more closely at what happens to blood as it is pumped through our lungs.

Art

The children continued with their Global Canvas art project.  Each group has created a final design of their artwork depicting an endangered species and worked out which materials they will need to construct their project.  Any donations of cardboard by next Monday would be much appreciated.

Weekly News 18.01.19

Sickness absence

If your child has been sick or had diarrhoea, please remember that they must not return to school until 48 hours after their last bout of sickness/diarrhoea. Please note there is no need for your child to be kept off school if they have just complained of a tummy ache and they are feeling ok otherwise.

Social media

We are aware that social media sites  e.g. Facebook are being used to post complaints and derogatory comments about matters concerning either our school or other parents associated with our school.  If you have an issue with anything within school, please do contact the school in the first instance because comments posted on social media can be misunderstood and detrimental to people’s wellbeing.

I am always happy and willing to speak to parents about any concerns and would request that you speak to me if you are unhappy about something regarding school.

Head lice

We have had several reports of head lice in school this week.  Please could you check your child’s hair and treat as necessary.  It would also be helpful if long hair could be tied up/plaited etc and please encourage your child not to take their hair down during the day and keep their hair up. I have been approached by parents who are understandably frustrated at having to repeatedly treat their child’s hair because they come home from school with head lice yet again.  Your support with this would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Class 1 weekly roundup

Phonics: This week the children have continued to focus on segmenting and blending, writing CVC words and short sentences.

We looked at  a new digraph – ‘ay’ – May I play, the children had a go at reading words with the sound in and at spelling them.

ay

Maths:

This week the class have looked at one and two less.  We linked our Maths to our story of the Gingerbread Man.   We used sentences – If Counting Caterpillar eats 2  buttons, there will be 2 less.  2 less than 5 is 3,  etc.  We sang  a Gingerbread Man song – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCZ3dzFK6BI

and played different Gingerbread Men maths games on the laptops, to help with counting and number recognition – https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/gingerbread-man-game

Class 3 weekly update

Hello and welcome back, we hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas and new year!  Thank you for all your kind Christmas gifts and cards from the children.

Class 3 have settled back well into the new term this week and have been starting their new topics in history and science. Our science topic is ‘Uses of everyday materials’ and the children worked in small groups to discuss and share their prior learning about this topic.  Our history topic is yet to be revealed by Miss Moran next week! The children looked at picture clues to help them think about what they might be learning…they had lots of interesting ideas!

Maths – We started a new topic on ‘Money’.  This week we have been looking at counting money in pence and pounds.  Many of the children have a great understanding of using money and this has helped them to work out different totals and solve reasoning and problem style questions.

English – The children started off the week by writing a recount about what they did over the holidays.  Then in Read, write, inc the green group have been reading ‘Elvis’ and the yellow group have been reading ‘Haircuts’.  The rest of the class have been focusing on forming nouns using the suffix ‘-ness’ (e.g. happiness, sadness, tiredness).  They have been using these words in their own sentences, as well as ensuring they add lots of detail and extend their sentences using adjectives and conjunctions.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 18th January 11.01.19
