Class 6 Update 24th May

English

This week the children began work on their new novel study ‘The Mysteries of Harris Burdick’ by Chris Van Allsburg.  The children studied the front cover in detail, making predictions about the story and drawing the illustration from a different perspective.  They also wrote a first person narrative of what they think may have happened to Harris Burdick, following on from reading the book’s introduction.

Geography

The children began their new topic on South America by using an atlas to identify all of the countries and capital cities that make up the continent. They also labelled the oceans surrounding South America and looked at features such as lakes, mountain ranges and which countries lie on the equator.

Cultural Diversity Day

The children each chose a different country to work on, researching the culture there.  They worked in pairs to present the information as a poster or leaflet.  The children also did some cookery that day, making jam roly polys!

Class 3 weekly update

English / Maths – All the children have been doing their end of Key stage 1 SATs in reading and maths this week.  They had two reading papers and two maths papers (arithmetic and reasoning).  They have all tried really hard with these, well done Class 3!

Science – This week we looked at describing how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals using the idea of the food chain.  The children were introduced to the terms ‘producer’, ‘consumer’, ‘predator’ and ‘prey’ and looked together at creating a food chain.  They then worked in pairs to complete interactive tasks to make a range of food chains, thinking carefully where the plants/animals were placed each time.  You can find this link at       http://• http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/content/animals/kidscorner/games/foodchaingame.htm

RE – In RE the children have been looking at the lyrics in some Christian songs and hymns – ‘My Lighthouse’, ‘God who made the earth’ and ‘Jesus loves me’.  They worked in groups and discussed the meaning of the lyrics and what Christians might learn about God from the songs.

Art – This week we looked at different images of snakes showing their different patterns and made links to the rainbow serpent – a common motif in the art and religion of Aboriginal Australia.  The children made collages using coloured paper to create their own snake patterns.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 7th June 24.05.19

Please can children write sentences using all their spellings in their test books.

Please can children bring in a kitchen roll tube after the holidays for an art project Miss Francis has planned.

Class 5 weekly update

Well done everyone on another fantastic week!

Our English work last week was centred around chapter ten in our class novel where the main character experiences a range of extreme emotions, both positive and negative. The children’s task was to re-write the chapter using alternative descriptive language. We began the week by planning out the re-write, looking firstly at the three key events in the chapter. Once we’d decided what those were, the children used a range of resources to plan what emotions they thought the main character would be feeling at each point, their challenge was to use a variety of vocabulary without repeating themselves and they made notes on the adjectives, verbs and adverbs that they wanted to use. The children then had an opportunity to write an initial draft, they used self-assessment to analyse their first attempt, making suggestions on how they could improve their writing. To finish the week’s work off, the children then used their own comments to work on their next steps and produced an edited and improved final draft of their own chapter. This week we will be looking at a character description for what is a quite formidable character who we’ve just been introduced to.

Our Maths work last week was focusing on adding fractions. We first looked at the process for adding fractions that had different denominators and this revolved around the children’s multiplication knowledge. They needed to see the connections between numbers so that they could use multiplication and division to convert the denominators, making the addition a much more simple task. Later in the week we moved onto adding three or more fractions together. To do this the children used the bar model as a resource for helping them to convert denominators. This week we’ll be adding mixed numbers before moving onto subtracting fractions.

Finally, I just want to thank all of the children for a wonderful trip to Arthog this weekend. You were all amazing at the activities, everyone really pushed themselves by stepping out of their comfort zone at times and you should be extremely proud of yourselves for doing that.

Let’s have a brilliant week in the run up to half-term.

Mr Sudlow.
