Class 2 Weekly Update 10/05/2019

We have loved hearing Class 2’s memoires of their days in The Great British Countryside. No matter how far-fetched the stories have been, the descriptions of the places they have seen and things in which they have found on their adventures of the great outdoors have been just brilliant!
In English they have continued with their Read Write Inc stories. Orange books have been reading and writing about things in which they might like to be when they are grown up, and Purple books have been reading and writing about the tale of Tim and Tom. Yellow books have been using digital media to look at images and use story telling language to describe what they can see in a freeze frame using adventurous adjectives. The children have also had a focus on using varied conjunctions to join their ideas in writing. For the second half of the week Class 2 have started their novel study work. Our new story is Alfie and the Great Outdoors and we have used descriptive language in activities linked to the first bit of the story.
In Maths the children have continued with their next steps in learning involving multiplication concepts. They have been doing both practical independent and guided group activities. We started with making arrays, then solved problems using them. We then moved on to recognising and working out doubles. We then finished the week solving problems involving doubling. The children have also continued to chant and count in their 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.
In Music the children have been both reading and playing simple pieces of music together. Their timing is getting so much better.
For PE the children were involved in relay practice, egg and spoon, obstacle and sprint. It is nice to see a competitive edge from the children even at this early stage.
Spellings have gone home today. We are all very proud of how the children are learning them. They are getting real satisfaction from their results. We would like to also say that we are delighted that your children are reading for pleasure all of the time, and thank you for your support when reading with, to or listening to your child at home.
Finally may we say congratulations to Oscar who has won Star of the Week trophy for setting an unbelievable example in school for his peers and for putting in real effort in all of his lessons.
Have a lovely weekend together and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday.

Class 6 Update

Maths

Lots of revision for Year 6 this week!  We have worked on drawing and interpreting pie charts and line graphs, finding the diameter and radius of circles, ratio and scale factors.

English

The children have continued to revise spelling rules, punctuation and grammar this week.

There are no new spellings this week due to SATs and Arthog next week.

Class 3 weekly update

English – In Read, Write, Inc this week the red group have been reading ‘Hairy Fairy’ which is all about a fairy who couldn’t get a job because he was so hairy!  They discussed the story and wrote a letter in the role as the fairy hairy to ask the Fairy Queen for a job with Father Christmas. The blue group have been reading ‘Playday’ which is all about children playing different different games in class.  They discussed the story and wrote about playing.

The rest of the class have been focusing on identifying and writing past and present progressive forms of verbs in sentences.  Past progressive sentences (a sentence that uses was / were and then a verb with the ‘ing’ suffix): e.g. We were playing football all afternoon.  Present progressive sentences (a sentence that uses is / are and then a verb with the ‘ing’ suffix): e.g. My friends are jumping.

Maths – The children have been looking at telling the time using half past, o’clock, quarter past and quarter to.

They have also been recognising and finding a third of shapes and amounts.  They used shapes to find one third in as many different ways as they could and used equipment such as bar models and counters to find one third of amounts by sharing objects into three equal groups.  Some children were also able to link this to the 3 times tables.  They have also been using non-unit fractions to recognise, make and write the fractions 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 1/3 and 2/3.

Science – This week we have been exploring and comparing the differences between things that are living, dead and things that have never been alive and sorting objects into these categories.  We also linked this to our work on MRS GREN last week (all the common characteristics shared by all living things), e.g. movement, respiration, sense.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 17th May.  Please write at least 4 sentences using these words in spellings book.  10.05.19

Class 5 weekly update

Well done class 5 on a great week.

Our focus in English has been on letter writing. The children briefly recapped the features of a letter before planning out the content for their work. They moved onto writing an initial first draft using a layout guide, their individual plans and the class novel to help them. After that they evaluated their work along with peer assessment and using marking comments. The children then edited and improved their draft to create the final version of their letter. Next week our topic will be descriptive writing and the children will be re-writing a chapter of the book.

In Maths the children have been working really hard on fractions. We have used our  knowledge of the relationships between numbers to convert fractions so that they have a common denominator. This has then enabled the children to compare and order the fractions, using mathematical symbols. The children have utilised written calculation alongside visual representations of fractions really accurately and efficiently during this week. We have then moved onto adding and subtracting fractions that have a common denominator as well as fractions that don’t, using multiplication and division to find the best solution for converting fractions so that they can be added or subtracted. We will be continuing with this topic next week.

Please note that our weekly spelling test will take place next Thursday (16th) because of the Arthog trip on Friday.

Have a fantastic weekend everyone, see you next week.

Mr Sudlow.
