Home learning for week beginning 11.05.2020 – ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’

Hi Class 1 Children and Adults,

I hope you have all had a lovely Bank Holiday Weekend and managed to celebrate V.E. Day on Friday. Once again I have been pleased to see all your photos and videos showing what you have been doing. It really does put a big smile on my face when I open Tapestry and see your happy faces. So thank you adults for doing this, you can never post too many. Keep an eye out for Class 1, Gallery 2.

This week our home learning activities are based around the story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle, you will revisit healthy eating, look at life cycles and investigate symmetry.

A few parents have requested a timetable of when to teach what during the day, so I have put together a rough timetable that you can adopt or adapt to suit your needs. Any feedback is welcome and I am happy to answer questions, just drop me an email – class1@bicton.shropshire.sch.uk

I have put the phonics to later in the morning, as the teaching videos start to be added from 9.30am to 10.45am (depending on which set your child is on). Rosie does all the teaching for you, exactly as I would do in class. If your child has watched all the sound  videos, then watch and do the activities for the Spelling Video (there is no need to watch both). A few parents have mentioned it works really well if you play the video through the T.V.

love,

Mrs Bowes x

Hello everyone

I hope you have had a good week and enjoyed the return of the sunshine. It seems strange celebrating VE Day at home and it’s sad not being able to get together with all my family. I know you will be celebrating this special day in different ways whether it be putting up bunting, baking or watching the Queen’s speech and the other commemorative broadcasts on TV.  Whatever you are doing, I hope you are keeping well and staying safe. I hope you have a lovely day and please feel free to email in any pictures of your day!

Home access to Sing Up

Sing Up, a singing website which we subscribe to in school, have created a Home area on their website which is totally free and accessible to parents and families. They are uploading videos and resources for children and their families to make the most of singing whilst at home. Click on this link www.singup.org/singupathome to visit their website.

Raspberry Pi

The Raspberry Pi Foundation have launched a new, free Digital Making at Home initiative to support parents and young people with coding at home. You don’t need any coding experience to join in, and all of their resources and activities are free forever.

Every Monday, they release new themed code-along videos about projects designed for all levels of ability. They also provide support tutorials for parents who are interested in learning more about coding tools like Scratch and Python, and over 200 projects with step-by-step instructions that are accessible online at any time — all for free.

First News

We hope your child has enjoyed reading First News over the past couple of weeks and, if they haven’t had chance to, why not have a read of the latest editions below.

First News VE Day Edition

And finally…

I’ve had a  lovely week in school with our key workers’ children and other staff. We have been gardening, having some very competitive staff v children table-tennis battles (Miss Carr and Mr Andrews not me!), painting VE Day pebbles with Miss Stone and just generally looking after each other.

All was going well until Thursday morning when I decided to cycle to school rather than walk and, let’s just say, my short journey didn’t go as planned. I fell off my bike on the way to school and ended up at RSH with a fractured humerus.  The NHS staff were absolutely amazing and really looked after me, even though they could have done without it with so much else to do.

My husband has been a star and has been taught how to blow-dry and straighten my hair this morning, much to our amusement!

So the next time I tell the children to be careful during a school holiday, and not to come back with any broken bones, I need to follow my own advice!

Take care everyone and stay safe.

Have fun!

Literacy

Watch and listen to me reading the story – don’t forget to join in!

Listen out for words that rhyme as I read the story.

Dinosaurs begin with the ‘d’ sound, can you look around your house and see if you can spot more things that also begin with the sound ‘d’

Turn your ‘d’ sound hunt into a game of eye spy!

If you  have other Dinosaur books at home, share them with your adult, for example the Harry and the Dinosaur stories.

Maths

Put your dinosaurs in size order, which is the tallest?  The smallest?  The longest?

Sort your dinosaurs out into groups – spikey ones / tall ones /long ones / brown ones  etc.

How many ways can you sort them?   How many are in each group?  Which group has the most /  least dinsouars?

How many dinonsaurs can fit into a….. try different size containers, encorage your child to count as they place one more in (if you haven’t got dinosaurs use other small play animals).  You can also count the dinosaurs back out.    WHich container can hold the most?  Least?

EAD:

Play the story

Stomp like a dinosaur – as you walk around the house or garden stomp like dinosaurs saying the rhymes as you go. Wearing big boots for this would be fun!

Sand play – if you have access to a sand pit  / soil at home your child could re create pages from the book with their toy dinosaurs (or other small toys pretending to be dinosaurs).

Water play – the toy dinosaurs can join your child in the bath and dive in as if diving into a swamp while you repeat some of the rhymes again.

or give your Dinisaurs a bath!

DINOSAUR BATH - A quick and easy sensory activity; toddler activity; preschool activity; indoor activity; car wash activity; rainy day activity; sensory bin activity from Busy Toddler

Make a dinosaur puppet
You can make a simple dinosaur puppet with your child from a fairly long sock. Felt would be ideal for eyes, teeth and spines but you could use other materials such as buttons for eyes and coloured cellophane for spines. Watch the video for more ideas.
If you make a pair of dinosaur sock puppets they could be the ‘best of friends!’

Mr Alridge (our Year 5/6 brass teacher) is able to create individual pupil accounts for the online music platform (Charanga/Yumu) that he uses in our brass lessons. This will enable children to access the same music covered in lessons, as well as explore new material. If you are interested, please email him on the details below.
