Maths

The children have continued to practise counting and reading numbers this week.  They have had to read numbers and then count out the correct amount of objects from a pile.

Some children worked on making sure the teddies had the right amount of plates and cutlery for their lunch.

Oswestry School’s Primary Maths Challenge 2016

A huge well done to the Year 5 and 6 children who took part in the Primary Maths Challenge at Oswestry School on Wednesday afternoon. They had some pretty tricky problems to solve and Mrs Roberts was very impressed with their perseverance and, most importantly, independence.  The team came 4th out of the 9 schools competing and were only 5 points behind the 3rd-placed team.

Outdoor PE

Class 1 had lots of fun doing a range of PE activities this afternoon.  We practised, throwing and catching, dribbling a ball, kicking a ball, throwing beanbags into nets and balance skills.

Class 4 Homework

Dear Parents/Carers,

This week we have been looking at number and place value in Maths.

We are sending out homework tonight on this subject that is set according to children’s end of year expectations. We expect that all children complete some homework each week. Children can choose which questions they would like to do, independently or with your support, that will consolidate the work that we have been doing in class.

If any children feel that they would like an extra challenge, they should speak to an adult in Class 4, and we will happily send additional homework out.

Homework this year will be sent home in a homework book on a Wednesday and should be returned to school by the following Monday. This is so that it can be marked and new homework stuck in before it is due to be sent out again.

We thank you for your support with this.

Kind regards,

Mrs Chadwick and Mrs Foster

Lunch time

The children have very quickly settled into our lunch time routine.  They are all independent at getting themselves ready and sensibly settling down to eat.   The plates are usually clean by the time the children go out for lunch playtime

Letters and sounds

This week the children have been looking at ‘m’ and ‘a’.    They have looked at the letters, found objects beginning with the letters and had a go at writing them.

For ‘m’ we say ‘Down Maisie , mountain, mountain.’  and for ‘a’ we say ‘Around the apple and down the leaf.’

For all the letters and sounds we cove,r the children will learn a song to go with them, and will practise making/writing the letters using playdoh, whiteboard pens, interactive whiteboard, chalks etc.

When we have covered a sound we will pop the worksheet into your child’s bag so they can share it at home.

Parking Measures

Further to the letter sent home on Tuesday, and previous letters and emails, thank you to adults who have parked at the Village Hall or made other arrangements for travelling to and from school. A further letter has been sent home today concerning the following:

We would like to reiterate that there is no parking in the school car park before or after school including when collecting from after school clubs that finish at 4:15 or 4:30.  It is still possible to drive into the car park to drop children at the Hall for Breakfast or 8:30 Club and also to collect children from Film Club on Tuesdays after 5:00 p.m.  These measures are for everyone’s safety, as well as ensuring that delivery vehicles can access and exit the school site safely, and were discussed at length and agreed by the School’s Governing Body and the Local Authority prior to the commencement of the building work.

It is also imperative that vehicles are not parked on the zig zag lines on Bicton Lane or on the crossing, which has been the case on several days this week, as adults and children are unable to see if it is safe to cross the road and residents cannot see to drive out on to Bicton Lane safely. There are still disabled parking spaces available for badge holders and thank you to parents who have enquired about this.  If you have any questions about the current arrangements, please do not hesitate to speak to me.

8:30 Club – no fee during building work from next week

To help ease parking in the village before school, there will be no cost from next week onwards for the 8:30 club whilst the school car park is out of use.  Adults can drop children at the Hall between 8:30 and 8:35 at the latest and children will be supervised by a member of staff before being taken to their classes at 8:45. Please ask if you have any questions.

Defibrillator training – Monday 19th September from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m.

We have at last been able to secure a provider to deliver training for our defibrillator which we were able to purchase last year through fund raising and several donations. The training is open to any parents and if you would like to attend please let the Office know. Further details are in the letter attached below.

Club fees reminder

Please could we remind you of the charges for clubs as follows:

Film Club and Breakfast Club – £1.50 per child/£3.00 per family

Craft Club £1.00 per child

Finally…

We have had a fantastic first week back and we have been amazed at how well the new children have settled in at Bicton School and enjoyed making friends with the older children.  Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Class 3 Weekly Update

We have had a great week in Class 3 and the children are settling back in well. Here is a brief overview of what we have been doing in English and Maths.

English – We have been doing some work for display to make our classroom look lovely! The children have written about their summer holiday and have completed a book review on their favourite book. Next week we will begin our work on Roald Dahl.

Maths – We have been revising what we already know about place value. The children created their own ‘Place Value Museums’ for me where they used equipment, pictures and number sentences to explain what numbers are made up of, e.g. 10 + 10 + 10 + 4 = 34, 30 + 4 = 34, 20 + 14 = 34 etc. We have been revising how to look at numbers in 10s and 1s and next week will progress onto 3 and 4 digit numbers. We have also done some problem solving using our knowledge of place value to help us.

Spelling – We have done some revision on the rules for adding the suffixes ‘ed’ and ‘ing’. We will continue to revise this next week. Please bear in mind that the first few weeks spelling often consists of revising spelling rules and patterns already taught and it may take some time to ensure your child has been put in the appropriate spelling group. Therefore your child may change groups over the next few weeks but assessment will be used within school to decide this. We always stress to the children that it is not just about getting all your spellings right on a Friday, but it is about getting them right in your independent work everyday.

PE – The children had their first outdoor PE lesson today which they really enjoyed. Please can you ensure the appropriate kit is always in school, particularly on a Tuesday and Friday. Indoor and outdoor kit is necessary as well as trainers.

Homework – The children have been given geography homework this week due in for next Friday. Please see the link below for details.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Barratt
