Class 2 Weekly update

English – This week the children have been enjoying poems about the Seaside. We have looked at poems that rhyme and don’t rhyme, are realistic and non-realistic, practised performing them and writing our own versions about our own experiences.

Maths – Year 1 children have been adding and subtracting this week, looking for patterns to help them work out other number sentences and using their number bonds to 10 and 20. Year 2 children have revised areas ready for SATs next week, we have looked at multiplication and division, fractions of shapes and amounts and shape properties.

Science – We went on a ‘wild plant hunt’ in our Science lesson and then came back to class to start our class experiment. We have planted four tomato plants and placed them in different conditions to see what happens: 1) water and sunlight, 2) water and no sunlight, 3) no water and no sunlight and 4) sunlight and no water. The children have made predictions about what they think will happen.

Geography – In our ‘Weather’ topic the children have been looking at weather forecasts and making their own predictions about what the weather will be like in the next few days. We then had maps of the British Isles and plotted on weather symbols according to a weather forecast.

Phonics – Year 1 have been looking at alternative spellings for the ‘ar’, ‘r’ and ‘s’ phonemes.

Spellings – Spellings to be tested 19.5.17

12.5.17 spellings

Just a reminder that the Year 2 children will be taking their SATs papers next week (15.5.17), they have all worked really hard in preparation for these and should already be very proud of themselves!

Have a great weekend

Disabled parking spaces – polite reminder

Please could we ask you not to park in the disabled parking spaces in front of and alongside the school, unless you have a blue badge or you have mobility difficulties.  We have a number of parents/grandparents who need a disabled parking space as close as possible to the school building, especially at the end of the day.  We are aware that these spaces are frequently being used by adults who do not need a disabled space so we thank you in advance for your cooperation with this.

Class 3 D&T

Today the children have been designing their packaging for their chocolate or sweet product. I showed the children the programme we will be using on purplemash to create our final product and have told them if they want to have a go on it at home to become familiar with it they are very welcome to do so.

The children will need to log in to their personal purplemash account and then type into the search programme ‘nets’. The programme is called ‘2Design and Make’ so children just need to click on this and launch the app when it appears. They can then spend some time exploring and trying out the programme.

I have explained to the children that this is not formal homework, it is just something they can do if they want to. Children will not be disadvantaged if they don’t have a go on it as we will be spending time in class becoming familiar with it too.

Class 2 Science

Today in Science, we went on a ‘wild plant hunt’ around the school. We were looking for Dandelions, Daisies, Nettles, Clover, Buttercups, Brambles, Ivy and Dog Rose.

Ordering numbers to 20

Today Class 1 practised running around with a number 0 -20, then getting themselves into the correct order on the signal.

Over the next few days we will be concentrating on counting back (early subtraction).

In maths the children have enjoyed learning about Roman numerals.  We are now going to be doing some work on the place value of decimal numbers.

In Science we have looked closely at flowering plants and their parts and done some water colour paintings of tulips.  This week Class 4 began their ‘River Rangers’ work with the Shropshire Wildlife Trust.  This will continue for 3 more weeks.  This week they learnt all about water as a precious resource.

In Geography the children have made models of the water cycle and they are going to be researching coastlines next week and doing some map work.
