Class 2 Weekly Update

English – English this week we have mostly been revisiting areas already learned. Year one children have recapped on questions, singular and plural and the days of the week. Year 2 have been looking at previous practise reading and SPAG papers and learning how to answer the questions correctly. We have also discussed the importance of reading questions carefully.

Maths – Year 1 children have been using number lines this week to add and take away. They have worked really hard and shown a good understanding of this! Year 2 have looked at 2D and 3D shapes and revisited properties of shape. We have also completed a practise reasoning paper and gone over this together in class – identifying any misconceptions.

Phonics – Year 1 have looked at the alternative spelling of the ‘ow’ phoneme. Year 2 have revised present and past tense.

Geography – We started our new topic ‘Weather Experts’ this week, the children enjoyed identifying the different seasons and talking about weather expected in each season. We also discussed the difference between seasonal weather and daily weather.

Spellings – To be tested Friday 5th May 2017.

28.4.17 spellings

Just a little reminder that it is Bank Holiday Monday and next week I will not be in school as I am on my Forest School course, Mrs Lupton will be present in my absence.

I have returned the SATs Booster books back to Year 2 children today. Please feel free to now work through these at your own pace, completing any pages you wish. We will complete the Year 2 tests, week beginning Monday 15th May.

Thank you for your continued support.

Class 3 Weekly Update

English – This week we have been designing and describing a new type of sweet or chocolate for Willy Wonka to make. We revised how to extend expanded noun phrases and adverbs when doing this.  We have also been watching some TV adverts to begin to create a word bank of persuasive language that we will be able to use when we come to create our own adverts.

Maths – We have been doing work on 3D shapes this week (linked to our D&T work). We have revised the language of faces, vertices and edges and have used these to describe the properties of different shapes. We have learned what a prism is and have explored the nets of different 3D shapes too,

Science: We have carried out an investigation to do with the different states of water and have learned about evaporation, condensation and evaporation. We will continue this through the next couple of weeks.

D&T: We have begun our D&T project where we will be designing and making some packaging for our new chocolate or sweet we created in English. We have started off by exploring different types of packaging and exploring the different nets and how to assemble them.

PE: The children have really enjoyed their swimming and tennis lessons this week.

Music: The children have begun a new unit of work called ‘singing games’  – they have been exploring pattern and rhythm within these.

Thank you to everyone who brought in some packaging for our D&T project. We have got lots to work with so thank you!

Years 3 – 6 Research study

Get Involved in a National Research Study!

Our school is taking part in a national research study about child anxiety funded by the National Institute for Health Research.  We are hoping as many families as possible with children in Years 3 – 6 will get involved.  The research team from the University of Reading are really keen for a broad range of families to take part, including those with children who are confident, those who are anxious and those in between.   We are sending home information about the research study, together with some short questionnaires.  You can also find out more about the research, agree to take part and complete the short questionnaires here:

As a way of saying thank you, the University of Reading will provide our school with £1 for each complete set of returned questionnaires (parent, child, teacher) – so it’d be great to get as many families involved as possible!

Thank you!

Dear Parents/Carers,

Thank you so much for all the packaging that has been donated to Class 3 to help us with our D&T project, it is very much appreciated and will be very useful!

Thank you!

Miss Barratt

New Summer topics

Our new topics this term are All Creatures Great and Small and Green fingers.  A paper copy of the areas we will be covering will be sent home tomorrow.

Please find attached a topic web displaying initial ideas for activities and learning opportunities. These activities and learning opportunities will be adapted and enhanced depending upon the interests and progress of the children.

Things to remember:

  • Your child can bring in a named water bottle into school. There is always water available throughout the day.
  • Your child can bring in a healthy snack to eat at break time.   Fruit is provided on a daily basis in school.
  • Please provide a coat as the weather is still changeable.  This can be kept in your child’s locker.
  • We have a wellie rack outside for your child to keep a pair of named wellies in school.
  • Please make sure all clothing is clearly labelled with your child’s name, including shoes/pumps.
  • There is a green basket in the room, near the lockers. This basket is there for your child to put the home link book messages, money, messages into.
  • Any monies for school dinners etc. are to be put in a named, sealed envelope stating what the money is for.
  • Please could we ask for children to refrain from bringing in their own toys into school. Children get very upset if their toys get broken by accident or go missing!

Reading:  The children in Class 1 are making super progress, reading at  home really helps them to continue to improve.

Reading/book bags need to be in school each day. Reading takes place every day in class, whether through guided reading, group reading, shared reading or independent reading sessions. Your child will read to an adult regularly in class on a one to one basis. Children should be encouraged to read a range of materials as well as their reading scheme books, such as magazines, leaflets, newspapers etc. When you have read with your child at home, please write a comment in the reading diary.

PE Kits

Physical development takes place at least twice a week. Please could you ensure that your child has a full PE kit in their locker all week.

Tapestry

The first term of using Tapestry has gone well.  The children enjoy sharing what they have done at home and the photos that you add.  So do please keep adding to your child’s online journey.

I went to London to surprise Nikki in the hope of catching sight of her and cheering her on.  (You can just about see her back next to a runner in orange!). A family standing next to me shouted her name as well so that she would hear and the smile on her face when she spotted us is something I will always remember.

Well done Nikki from everyone at Bicton ?
