More Snow Forecast – Procedures for Monday morning

We are sure parents are aware that there is very heavy disruptive snow predicted for most of Sunday and this may affect our ability to open on Monday. We will let parents know as soon as possible either during Sunday or on Monday morning if the school will be closed.

Could we please remind you to listen to BBC Radio Shropshire (96FM) for up to date information on school closures or check the BBC Radio Shropshire site www.bbc.co.uk/shropshire or the Shropshire Council site www.shropshire.gov.uk

Thank you

Class 3 Weekly Update

English: This week we have been revising conjunctions. The Year 2 children have been using the subordinate conjunctions ‘when’ ‘if’ and ‘because’ in their writing and the Year 3 children have been learning about subordinate clauses – how to identify them, where they can be put in sentences and how to punctuate them. We have also done some independent writing this week, where the children wrote a diary explaining everything they were looking forward to about the pantomime.

Maths: We have continued our fraction work this week. The Year 2 children have been identifying unit fractions (halves, thirds and quarters) in different images and representations whereas the Year 3 children have been identifying non-unit fractions (two thirds, three fifths etc) in different images and representations. All the children have been developing their reasoning skills this week as they have been challenged to explain how they know their answers are right.

Art: The children completed their planet art work this week that linked to our science work.

RE: We talked about the part in the nativity story where the wise men bring gifts to Jesus. We then spent some time thinking about the gifts we could give each other at Christmas – thinking of gifts which don’t cost money – love, joy etc.

This week has also consisted of rehearsals for our Christmas Concert as well as a fantastic morning out at the pantomime.

Please note that new spellings haven’t been set for next week. This is because we didn’t get round to doing the spelling test on Friday so we will roll those spellings over to next week. Children have not been set homework for next week either as I am aware that the Christmas Concert is taking up two evenings.

Weekly News 08.12.17

U11s Football Success

Well done to the Year 5/6 boys who played in the U11s football tournament on Wednesday evening. They topped their group, winning 2, drawing one and losing just one match, and will now progress to the next round after Christmas.

Choir Events

Well done to all the children in the choir who have performed so well in recent events. I heard they sounded amazing this morning at the Co-op and they were a credit to our school last week at Adcote School. Just a reminder that some children in the choir have been asked to sing at St Chad’s on Monday morning and also at the Fire Service Carol Service next Wednesday evening.

Christmas Performances

With the early closure today, because of the adverse weather conditions, we were not able to send the letter out regarding the arrangements for next week. Children need to be at school on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5:15pm please. The doors will open at 5:15 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and FOBs will be serving refreshments before the concert and during the interval on each evening. They will also be selling raffle tickets for the hampers at the Nativity in Church and the concerts in the school hall.

Snow Closure

Please keep an eye on the website on Sunday and Monday as we may have to close school if the weather conditions pose a risk to parents driving to and from school and also if a number of staff are unable to travel to school. We know that many parents struggled to get to school today for the early closure and some staff took in excess of 3 hours to get home. We will consider all the factors before making a decision whether to open on Monday, and also if we need to close early, and we thank you in advance for your understanding and support.  Please see below for further information.

Snow and Bad Weather Policy and Procedures November 2017

Please can children bring wellies to school on Monday (Class 1 have wellies already) as the children will be able to go on the field to enjoy the snow, if we are open.

Finally…

On behalf of all the staff, thank you for your support this week. It has been a very busy week and the children have been a credit to our school whilst the Ofsted inspectors were with us and also when we visited the pantomime. Our Ofsted report will be published after Christmas.

Thank you

Mrs Johnson and staff

Stone Age Day

We had lots of fun today and the children’s outfits were fantastic, thank you!  The children have made stone age bread, torc bracelets and had a go at belt weaving (it was a bit tricky!)  They also designed totem animal symbols for their tribes!

Class 1, 2 & 3 trip to the pantomime

Dear Parents/Carers,

The children are very excited about our trip to the pantomime tomorrow. Please can you ensure your child wears school uniform and brings a packed lunch (no glass bottles please). Children are allowed to bring a healthy snack for the interval.

Many Thanks,

Miss Barratt, Miss Edwards & Mrs Bowes

Ofsted Inspection – 5th and 6th December

We will be inspected by Ofsted on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th December 2017.  Your child has been given a letter today with instructions on how to give your views about our school by completing Ofsted’s online survey, Parent View, at: www.parentview.ofsted.gov.uk.

At the end of the parent letter, there is also information on how pupils can share their views by completing an online pupil questionnaire at the following link: ofsted.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/Pupil/10037869

We thank you and your child in advance for taking the time to provide your views which we value very much.

Mrs Johnson and staff

Maths

The children have focused on the Story of  ‘The very hungry caterpillar’  and had fun working out how many actions they could do in one minute!  The children made their own suggestions what actions to test – how many times they could write their name / how many numbers they could write, how many times they could touch their toes and reach for the sky, how many times they could run across the playground, take off and put on their shoes, how many duplo bricks they could attach together!

We also played the game ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’

Class 3 Weekly Update

English: We began the week by doing some creative writing where we were writing a diary as though we were an explorer climbing Mount Everest. We did our writing and then spent some time editing and improving it. The Year 3 children have been learning about prepositions this week – on, underneath, next to, on top of etc and the Year 2 children have been practising their capital letters, punctuation and use of conjunctions.

Maths: We have continued our work on fractions this week. The children have been recognising fractions in a variety of different real life situations as well as in a variety of different images. They have been practising writing fractions, matching written fractions to images and also explaining how they know their answers are right – e.g. I know it is 1/2 because the whole has been split into 2 equal groups and 1 of the groups is coloured in.

Art: The children completed some space art work this week using wax crayon and ink.

PE: The children have continued their games lessons this week.

Alongside all of this the children have been spending time practising for their upcoming Christmas Concert.

Mrs Hughes

As some of you may already be aware, Mrs Hughes has not been in school for the past couple of weeks and will be off work on long-term sickness for several months.  We are sure you will join us in sending Caroline our very best wishes and we are all thinking of her.

Pantomime Reminder

Just a reminder that children will need to bring a packed lunch for the pantomime next week – Classes 4 and 5 on Wednesday and Classes 1, 2 and 3 on Thursday. If your child is entitled to free school meals or the Universal Infant Free School Meals (Reception/Year 1/Year 2) please let the school office know by Tuesday morning at the very latest if you would like the school kitchen to provide a packed lunch.

Christmas Bauble Competition

Thank you for the baubles that have been returned so far.  if your child wants to decorate the bauble they were given, it needs to be handed in at the school office by Friday 8th December. The Co-op will be judging the entries and announcing the winners the following week.

Tickets for the Class 3/4/5 Christmas concerts are now on general sale, priced at £2 per ticket.  If you require tickets, and you are unable to get into school, please send money in with your child in a sealed envelope marked clearly with your name, the number of tickets required and for which evening.
