Class 5 weekly update

Well done to everyone in class 5 for an amazing week!

In Maths we have been working on statistics and data. The children have shown a really high level of understanding regarding the features that must be included in a line graph. We have discussed how it shows the progress of something over time and how it is important when working with line graphs to pick out the units of measurement as well as reading and interpreting the data itself. Next week we will move from analysing line graphs to drawing them ourselves.

In English this week we have been looking at report writing. The children did some brilliant research for their homework task and this led us nicely into the topic. As we read on through our class book we looked at the features of both a scientific report and a newspaper report. The children were then able to pick which one they would prefer to focus on, thinking very carefully about the reason behind their decision. They then wrote a small proposal that detailed what direction they wanted to go in and why. We used Ipads and laptops to research the subject of their report, which was a rare butterfly that is discovered in our class book by one of the characters. The children thoroughly enjoyed the freedom of directing their own learning whilst using varied approaches and this has been reflected in their finished work. They have worked extremely hard and with great care on their final writing pieces using the features they identified in their book, along with their research and notes they have made to produce amazing reports.

The homework this week is based on creativity in their writing. The task is to write a letter that captures the first impressions and feelings of one of the characters from our class book, as he has moved back to England. They need to predict how they think it will go before we read on next week, focusing on detailed description along with all of the techniques we have been working on over the last few weeks. These are detailed on the task sheet in their homework books.

Have a great weekend everyone, see you on Monday,

Mr Sudlow.

Class 3 weekly update

English – This week the children used their plans from last week to write their recount about the visit to the zoo.  They focused on including time conjunctions, conjunctions and a range of punctuation in their writing.  In their Read, write, Inc work green group have been reading ‘Tim and Tom’ and yellow group have been reading ‘Come on, Margo!’  The rest of the class have been working independently to add extra information to their sentences by using the subordinating clauses when, if, that, because.

Maths – The children have been adding 2-digit numbers to 2-digit numbers.  They progressed from not crossing the tens to crossing the tens using a range of equipment such as Base 10 and drawing their own number lines to count on in tens and ones.  Some even had a go at partitioning the ones by jumping along the number line to the nearest 10 first.

Science – This week we looked at the human life cycle and how we change from being a baby to an elderly person.  The children discussed each stage of the life cycle and how they change as they get older.  We had lots of interesting discussions as a class.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 30th November

Class 2 Weekly Update 16/11/18

It has been another lovely week with my Class 2 Superheroes.
In English we have been reading new stories together in our RWI groups. Every child is taking a lot of pleasure from their own reading as well as that of their peers. They have probably made this evident to you when reading their stories at home.
The children have been trying to improve their writing with adjectives and simple conjunctions. They wrote for purpose about their Chester Zoo trip as a diary entry and used talk for writing beforehand in order to compose their sentences from their very vivid memories of the day. Towards the end of the week our spelling and grammar focus was using exclamation marks. They then went onto using them in a comic strip format involving their favourite superhero’s dialogue.
In maths, we have started chanting and singing our two times tables. We have been learning how to record subtraction number stories as number sentences after using practical scenarios to help us. We have also had a focus on working through both addition and subtraction number sentences systematically explaining their reasoning along the way. All of the children have contributed so well during lesson starters involving mental maths and problems solving with real life contexts with their maths partners.
In Design and Technology the children are in the initial stages of building their class house made from various pieces of cardboard. They have taken real ownership of it in their small groups and have really thought hard about its structure, and which shaped boxes would complement other parts best. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next for it!
The children did wonderfully well again with their spellings today. The new lists have gone into their books today for next Friday. Thank you for supporting your children at home with them.
An enormous congratulations to Cerys for being Class 2’s winner of Bicton’s creative writing competition. Well done also to everybody who entered. We are so proud of you and your entries.
Thank you so much for your continued support and have a lovely weekend together.
Mr Mavin
