Turbo Turtle Drops in at Bicton!

We had an unexpected visitor this morning during our annual governors’ visit day.  After Mr Street had talked to us about different forms of renewable energy, Laura appeared with the Coop’s new mascot – Turbo Turtle!

Pantomime

We are all very excited about our visit to Theatre Severn next Thursday morning to watch Mother Goose. Just a reminder that children will need to bring a packed lunch for eating when we return to school.

No Smoking – Polite request

As you are aware, smoking is not permitted on the school car park or anywhere on the school site.  We also ask that adults do not smoke on the grass verge/pavement adjoining the pedestrian gate on Bicton Lane, as this affects children walking to school. We thank you in advance for your cooperation with this.

Class 5 Parents Lunch

We are looking forward to Class 5 parents and grandparents joining us for lunch next week.

School Lunches

The school kitchen have asked again if lunches can be paid for on Monday please rather than at the end of the week. Thank you

FOBS Planet Superheroes competition – Winners and runners up

Well done to everyone who entered the FOBS Planet Superheroes writing competition and congratulations to all the winners and runners up. We are very grateful to Hayley from Shrewsbury Library who judged the entries and visited school to announce the winners and runners up. Thank you also to Karen and Barbie for putting together the competition and coming along to our special assembly to present the prizes.

Hayley has now created a wonderful display of all the entries in the junior section of Shrewsbury Library, which we hope you will pop along to have a look at.

Children In Need 16.11.18

We had a lovely surprise visitor on Children In Need day when Mrs Roberts popped in with some cakes.  We persuaded her to stay for the cake sale and the children were so pleased to see her! Thank you to everybody who donated cakes/biscuits and sent in money for children to buy cakes which helped us to raise over £250 for the charity.

See if you can spot the cakes modelled on Mrs Johnson and Mrs J!

Class 6 weekly update 23.11.18

English

This week children have written a scientific report, suitable for publication in a science magazine.  They based their report on the chapter in our class novel where Miss Minton finds a rare butterfly, and they were able to apply what they have learnt about the features of formal writing as well as their research about swallowtail butterflies. Year 6 were all really pleased to read the following chapter to find out what happened to Clovis once he arrived at Westwood! Next week we will be looking at the features of argument/persuasive writing.

Maths

In maths this week we have continued our work on fractions and learnt how to convert fractions to the same numerator (the top part of the fraction) to help us arrange fractions in order of size.  We have discussed the rule, “when the numerators are the same, the bigger the denominator the smaller the fraction” e.g. 1/2    1/3    1/5    1/10.              Children have grasped a really good understanding of this concept and have been able to use it confidently in their reasoning, both verbally and in their written work.  Most children have also been able to use a pictorial representation to prove this rule using the bar model. We have also looked at adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and we will continue this next week.

Science

Children have enjoyed two afternoons of science this week and have explored the solubility of a range of different substances including salt, flour, sugar and bicarbonate of soda.  In the first lesson they made predictions of what they thought would happen when they added each substance to water then carried out their activity the following afternoon. In the next lesson, they will make use of the associated subject vocabulary to explain their findings and observations.

Geography

The children have completed their research on the 5 different types of mountain, recording how they are formed and giving well-known examples. Some children also wrote a diary entry to describe what it would be like to be on one of the mountains.

Homework

We are currently focusing on improving children’s knowledge of times table facts and children have been told which times table they need to revise.
