Miss Merricks goes to Uganda!

I would like to say thank you very much for all the support and donations I have had for my upcoming Uganda trip. For those of you who may have missed it, I will soon be volunteering at a school in Uganda, the school is in Kabale, southern Uganda and is run by the One Love Project. This is a non-profit organisation which aims to empower children with education and healthcare to contribute to a brighter future. The school has approximately 220 pupils aged 2-14, most of which are orphans that live on site. During my stay I will be helping with maintenance tasks, reading with pupils, supporting teachers, or even leading a lesson myself, depending on the school’s needs.

As part of this experience, I am kindly asking for support from our amazing school. The school I will be working with has very limited resources, and even small a donation can make a big difference to the children there. The physical donations I have received have been amazing but for anyone who would like to donate in other ways you can follow the link below to donate directly to the One Love Project. Every penny donated will go directly towards education, care, community development, and life-changing opportunities for some of the most vulnerable children in the region.

Kind regards,

Miss Merricks

Julia Buckley MP Visit

We were very excited to be visited by Julia Buckley, our local MP on Monday afternoon. Julia had a tour of the school and met with various groups of children to discuss our zebra crossing campaign and the potential impact of a new housing development next door to our school.  They were wonderful ambassadors for our school and asked some brilliant, insightful questions.

What might it be like for a visitor with dementia in our school?

Worship Council have been experiencing the difficulties people with dementia might have, when visiting our school.

Reverend Dave made adaptations to the children’s sight, hearing and physical movements. We walked through the school, completing tasks that visitors would need to do. We talked about how the difficulties affected the way we did things and how we felt when doing it. This helped us think about the adaptations we could make to the school, to make it easier and comfortable for visitors.

Mini Music 09.02.2026

Today’s Mini Music session began with our hello song, where the children joined in with lots of actions such as jumping, swimming, digging, and climbing. Everyone had great fun getting their bodies moving!

Our focus for the session was fast and slow. Mrs White introduced a new rocket song:
“Up like a rocket, down like the rain, back and forth like a chop chop train.”

The children explored different sounds using instruments. They used beater sticks to tap the chime bars, moving from low to high sounds – just like a rocket taking off from the ground and zooming up into space!

Next, the children played claves to create the sound of raindrops, experimenting with playing fast and slow. To finish, shakers were used to keep time with the “choo choo” sound of the train.

Valentine’s Day Disco

Less than one week until the Valentine Day’s Disco on Thursday 12, February!  We can’t wait to share food, games, music and dancing with the children!

Sandwiches, veggies, crisps, biscuits and squash will be provided by FOBS.  Games, cakes and popcorn will be 50p each, but of course, dancing and having fun will be FREE!

FOBS Meeting

If you’d like to get involved by volunteering, donating or sponsoring, please do!  We’d love to hear your ideas!

Our next meeting is at the Grapes at 8pm on Tuesday, 10th February.

World Book Day

Ahead of World Book Day on 5 March 2026, we’re seeking donations of used books and costumes to sell at a special afterschool book sale on Monday, 2 March.  We would be grateful if donations could be brought to reception by Friday, 27 February.

Sponsorship

We have a big fundraising goal for the year and will need the help of generous business sponsors to reach our target.  If you would be willing to contact sponsors or indeed provide sponsorship through your own business or employer, we would be very grateful!

We are looking to raise £30,000 for various outdoor areas at the school that need repairing and upgrading, including the trim trail, climbing wall and the early years play area.

Wraparound Care

We are currently exploring the possibility of extending our wraparound care provision and would really value your input.

To help us understand what would best support our families, we are asking parents to complete a short survey. Your feedback will help us assess demand, preferred hours, and how any potential changes could work in practice.

While we are keen to ensure our wraparound care meets the needs of our families, it is also important that any provision is financially viable and sustainable. Your responses will play a key role in helping us make an informed decision.

Thank you for taking the time to share your views.

Head of School Message

Dear parents/carers,

It has been a rather wet and chilly week, but there’s been plenty to smile about! We were absolutely delighted to receive our outstanding SIAMS report, which really reflects the care, values and hard work that go on in our school every day. The report is available to read here if you’d like to take a look.

We were also incredibly proud of our KS1 children, who took part in their very first sports competition this week at Crowmoor Primary School. They were fantastic — showing great teamwork, enthusiasm and sportsmanship throughout.

As I write this, our Year 6 pupils are currently at Arthog and having a wonderful time. They’ve been making the most of every moment, and we’re looking forward to welcoming them back this afternoon (tired but happy, no doubt!).

There’s lots happening next week too. Julia Buckley, our local MP, will be visiting school to meet the children and answer their questions about the proposed new housing development in Bicton. Reverend Dave will also be working with some of our pupils on how we can continue to make our school more dementia friendly.

Mrs Gairy and our Courageous Advocacy Council are also hosting a bake sale on Tuesday, 50p a cake and the proceeds are going to school in Uganda that is currently being run by the One Love Project. Miss Merricks will be volunteering at the school in Uganda later on this month. When she explained to the school council what her role would involve and that she was raising money to help the children (many of whom are orphans), the school council were keen to help.

We would be very grateful for donations of cakes, cookies, brownies or other baked goods for the bake sale next week Tuesday 20th February. Please remember to label any allergens, if donating home baked goods. Packaged items can be dropped off before the day of the sale and home-baked goods are best brought in on the day.
All items will be sold for 50p each. Thank you for your support!

Next week is Children’s Mental Health Week, and our Safety Soldiers will be launching this on Monday. They’ll be talking to the children about this year’s theme, “This Is My Place.”

Parent consultation bookings should be going live next week, and we’re also in the process of finalising term dates for 2026–2027, which will be shared as soon as they’re ready.

And finally, a reminder about our Valentine’s Disco after school on Thursday — pick-up will be at 4.45pm, and I’m afraid it’s no grown-ups allowed!

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Mrs Mavin
