Lost Uniform

Please could you check that your child has not come home in any items of clothing which belong to another child, as we have a couple of children who have mislaid sweatshirts in the last week (both of which are labelled with their names.)  If you could also check that your child’s uniform is labelled at the same time, we would be very grateful.

Many thanks for your support.

Head Lice

We have been made aware that there are a couple of cases of head lice in school at the moment. Could we please ask that you check your child’s/children’s hair carefully and use appropriate treatment if you find that your child is affected before they return to school.

There are leaflets available at the Office with the latest information on how to treat for head lice but if you have any queries or questions please do not hesitate to speak to myself or another member of staff.

Thank you for your support.

Class 5 News week ending 10th January

We’ve had a busy first week back and Class 5 seem to be really enjoying our new topic on Brazil.

Literacy

We have focused on improving our descriptive writing and tried to vary the way in which we open sentences, to make it more interesting for the reader. At the start of the week, we described our Christmas Day meal as though it were ‘The best meal in the world…ever!’, using interesting verbs and adjectives as well as similes and personification. I really enjoyed reading children’s writing and ended up incredibly hungry on Tuesday evening so their persuasive techniques worked!

On Friday we started our new text, The Vanishing Rainforest, which we will use as a stimulus for lots of writing activities, about the Amazon rainforest, over the next few weeks.

Numeracy

In Maths, we have been working on fractions which included showing equivalent fractions, converting improper fractions to mixed numbers and vice versa and ordering fractions by finding a common denominator.  Next week, we will extend this by looking at equivalent decimals and percentages.

Other activities included starting our new topic on solids, liquids and gases, researching ideas for carnival masks, discussing what is special about our world and why we should look after it and a group geography quiz which we will revisit next week. Children were able to name a range of continents, countries and oceans but were less sure about capital cities and location of particularplaces; Aberdovey was suggested as the capital of Wales and Kinnerley as a county!

I will be starting Year 6 Booster this Thursday from 3:15 – 4:30 and this week we will be focusing on grammar.

If you have any questions about any of the above, please do not hesitate to speak to me.

Thank you.

Parking – reminder

Please can we remind people not to park on Bicton Lane in the morning or after school, as this is a danger to families crossing the road and often results in residents not being able to enter or exit their properties.  If the school car park is full, please park at the Village Hall car park.

Many thanks for your support.

Welcome back

Children seem to have settled back into school happily after the Christmas break and we welcome Edward in Class 1 and Imogen in Class 2.

Clubs

Please check the calendar for details of Clubs for this term. Sewing Club for Class 5 has now changed to a Wednesday, starting from next Wednesday 15th. Mrs Johnson will be starting Year 6 Booster next Thursday so the second Year 6 Cookery Club will start after Year 6 SATs.  All Year 6 are encouraged to attend Booster Club to support their in-class work. Year 6 parents will be invited to an informal meeting with Mrs Johnson and Mr Davies one evening this month (time and date to be confirmed.)

Shrewsbury Town v Leyton Orient

Well done to the children who attended the match on Tuesday evening – Mr Davies said children’s behaviour was superb and they enjoyed being mentioned over the loud speaker! Thank you to parents for giving up your time to accompany your child to the match.

Christingle Service

Everyone is warmly invited to attend the Christingle service at Bicton Church on Sunday 12th January at 11.00 a.m.

Many thanks.

P D Day

Just a reminder that Monday 6th January is a P D Day, as shown on the calendar. We look forward to seeing all the children on Tuesday 7th and hope that everyone had a good Christmas.
