Class 2 Weekly Update 25/01/2019

In Class 2 we have loved listening to the children’s prior knowledge about the Victorians (or what they believed the Victorians and that era to be like) each day.
In English the children have continued to flourish in their RWI groups. In some cases they have been encouraged to use simple conjunctions to link their ideas when either writing or using talk for writing. They have moved onto the next part of the whole class story Beegu and have devised instructions on making sandwich.
In maths we have been using very practical means to add and subtract. We have used part whole models, number lines, apparatus and also using a bar model when subtracting. We have agreed ways of double checking our calculations to see if they make sense and have used reasoning well when explaining to our maths buddies. They children have also discovered that addition is commutative (done in any order) and some children have completed problems and explained their reasoning to give themselves an extra challenge.
Our art lesson has been linked to our History topic of The Victorians and the children have learned about the Victorian artist William Morris. They have now started to recreate strips of wallpaper with their own version of his designs. I can’t wait to see them all on display.
In Science the class have been learning about the grouping of animals. They have investigated sorting them based on certain features, characteristics or traits the animals may have. The prior knowledge and reasoning the children gave was very interesting to listen to indeed and it was something of real interest for this class.
In computing the children have been experimenting with the touch pad on the laptop. They have also been using an online learning platform to practise further their Maths and phonics work.
The children have been doing ever so well with their spellings and a new list is in their books. A special well done to both Dylan and Evie Webster who achieved Star of the Week status for lots of effort with their work in all lessons and tenacity even when they found something quite challenging. Well done to you both!
As a reminder, we have our class trip to Blists Hill on Wednesday. Please refer to the letter which went home for any additional details you may need to know.

Have a lovely weekend together and I look forward to seeing you on Monday.

Class 5 Weekly Update

Well done to everyone in class 5!

This week in English we have been working on instruction writing. The children have excelled with this topic identifying the features of the genre before extracting evidence from the book that they could use in their writing . They have planned, written, reflected, edited and improved their work with the end results being fantastic.

In Maths this week we completed our first multiplication tables test before moving onto measuring perimeter. The children have shown a tremendous amount of resilience this week as this topic required lots of trial and error with multiple step problems. However through their hard work and determination they have produced some really high quality work and should be proud of their achievements.

A letter about our homework project was given out to the children today, please don’t hesitate to call into class either before school or at the end of the day if you have any questions.

Mr Sudlow.

Class 6 update

English

This week the children have written their own story of a soldier going to war and being in the trenches.  They have tried to write some of their story in first person and present tense to make it more dramatic.

Maths

We have continued our work on decimal numbers by practising how to multiply and divide them by whole numbers.

History

This week the children turned the classroom into trenches and role played what they thought would happen.  They then wrote diary entries based on their experiences.

Science

In science this week the children had great fun making ‘blood’ smoothies.  We used the 4 components of blood cells in our smoothies, and talked about the role and appearance of each one.

Art

The children started their ‘Habitats of the World’ art projects this week.  They have made a fantastic start and will be continuing this over the next couple of weeks.

Class 1 weekly roundup

This week the children have continued to use the Gingerbread Man story as a basis for their maths work.

This week we have focussed on the number 6, the children have found different ways to partition 6 objects and then recalled the corresponding addition and subtraction facts.

Phonics:

The children have revised all the sounds taught so far and our new sound this week was: ‘ee’ – What can you see?

ee

The children have also been busy writing short sentences and some children have begun to independently write their own sentences and read them back.

Class 3 weekly update

English- The children have been linking their English work with topic work this week.  They wrote an information text based on how and why the fire started and why it spread so quickly.  Their focus was to write sentences to describe the main events of the Great Fire of London, use subheadings/paragraphs to separate their ideas and use conjunctions to extend their sentences.  They all wrote some fantastic pieces of information about the fire – well done!

In Read, write, Inc this week green group have been reading ‘Flip frog and the bug’ and yellow group have been reading ‘My best shirt’.  Both groups have worked really hard with their sentence work to change them and add extra detail.  The rest of the class have been working independently using the suffix ‘-ly’ to turn adjectives into adverbs.  They have written lots of super sentences using these words and extending their ideas using interesting vocabulary and conjunctions.

Maths – The children have been doing lots more practical work with money and their skills have really come along, especially using their knowledge of counting in multiples of 5 and 10 to add coins/notes together more efficiently.  They have been focusing on selecting money from an amount given to them, making the same amounts of money using pence (mainly using 5p, 10p and 20p coins) and comparing amounts in either pounds or pence.

Science – This week the children explored how some objects can be made from more than one material, e.g. a window can be made from glass or plastic.  They looked at more examples together and sorted objects into a Venn diagram using plastic and wood as the headings.  Some children also had a go at sorting their own materials and objects.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 1st February.
