Class 5 weekly update

Well done everyone on a brilliant first week back!

In English this week we have been working on play scripts using a very dramatic chapter from our class novel. We thought about how each character might be feeling during the scene, how they might move around as a consequence of the emotions they were experiencing and how they might speak. The children then incorporated all of the key features in script writing to their own work, they set the scene and built a character list before going onto getting their dialogue and stage directions down. We really focused heavily on how the script needed to be laid out on the page so that it is easy to navigate and read when performing. We will be looking at performing them on Monday.

Our Maths work this week has focused on subtracting fractions and the children have applied their knowledge from adding fractions to this current concept really well. They have worked on a range of fluency and reasoning problems that have required them to experiment with numbers, try different combinations and to think deeply about how they can arrange their work accurately to ensure that they can arrive at a correct answer.

Thank you to all the children for their hard work litter picking around the village on Wednesday. Your enthusiasm and positive attitude was infectious and has made a real difference to our local community which I know will be appreciated by the residents surrounding our school.

Have a fantastic weekend everyone and I’ll see you all next week,

Mr Sudlow.

Class 6 update

English

This week the children have written suspense stories based on the illustration entitled ‘Under the Rug.’  They worked on using short sentences, powerful verbs and the 5 senses to make their story exciting.

Maths

This week the children have begun their enterprise project.  This involved them carrying out market research to see what products would be popular, then calculating costs and sale prices to see what profits they could make by making and selling these products

Geography

The children researched some statements about the climate in South America to see whether they were true or false..

Class 3 weekly update – 7/6/19

English – This week we have been making a prediction about the purpose of a text by identifying what a contents pages is for, predicting what the topic of the text is and predicting who the text is aimed at.  The children created a spider diagram using the information they learnt from watching videos about the Great Barrier Reef and added information from further research.  Then they used an information piece of text to make a prediction about the text, extract information from it  and record what they found out.

In Read Write Inc the blue group have been reading ‘I think I want to be a bee’ and writing about writing about what they want to be when they grow up.  They had lots of interesting suggestions, including a fox and a horse!    Others wanted to be a firefighter, vet, pilot and rock star! The red group have been reading ‘King of birds’ and writing a story about a boy called Otto who told a fib to get his friends to like him more.  The yellow and green group have been reading and writing compound words (e.g. arm + chair = armchair, tooth + brush = toothbrush).  They have then been using these in their own sentences and correcting them in sentences.

Maths – This week the children have been looking at measures.  At the start of the week they measured objects to the nearest centimetre and metre and recorded what they found out.  They then compared the mass (weight) of objects by predicting which objects were heavier/lighter using non-standard units (cubes).  Then they started to find the mass of objects using standard units (grams).  They have all enjoyed the practical aspects of finding measures this week and have worked really well together.

Topic – The children have been looking at the physical features of Australia this week, including; the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest, the Pinnacles Desert, the Blue Mountains, the Twelve Apostles and Ayres Rock.

Class 2 and 3 had a fantastic time on their trip to ‘Shropshire Discovery Centre this week.  They took part in lots of fun activities including, pond dipping, a meadow walk and finding different minibeasts in their habitats.  They will be doing some follow up work during their science lesson next week.

We have had several reports of head lice in school this week.  Please could you check your child’s hair over the holiday and treat as necessary.  It would also be helpful if long hair could be tied up/plaited etc and please encourage your child not to take their hair down during the day and keep their hair up.  Your support with this would be much appreciated. Thank you

Class 5 weekly update

Well done to everyone in class 5 for a fantastic week after a full-on weekend at Arthog. Your effort levels have been incredible and the work you’ve produced has been amazing!

In English this week we have been looking at writing a character description. A prominent character has just been introduced to us in our novel and the first impressions can differ between us as readers, so it’s been really interesting to get everyone’s thoughts and perspectives on the recent events in the book and what they think the plot has in store for the next few chapters. The children have used imaginative vocabulary along with some great similes and metaphors to describe the character in brilliant detail.

In Maths this week we have been order ambien cr online focusing on the addition of mixed numbers. Everyone has worked so hard as the problems have often been three steps. The level of concentration and understanding that the children have shown has been fantastic.

On Tuesday we had our cultural diversity day. This year we looked at the cultures of Japan and Slovakia, we had talks with a Q ‘n’ A session from two of the boys in our class and the children found out lots of interesting facts about both cultures. We did a fact hunt around the classroom as well as some artwork. Thank you to both of the children who stood up and talked, you were amazing.

Have a fantastic half-term everyone and I’ll see you on Monday 3rd June.

Mr Sudlow.
