Class 4 Greek Day

Dear Parents/Carers,

On Wednesday 29th June, we are holding an Ancient Greek Day, based on our topic, in Class 4. We will enjoy a variety of activities that are linked with the Ancient Greek’s daily lives, including finding out about and making toys, arts, crafts and cooking.

We would like children to come dressed in an Ancient Greek outfit (this could be made with a white sheet and sandals.)

We would also like children to bring in an old jam jar each, which they will be decorating in the style of some Ancient Greek art.

In the afternoon, we will hold an Ancient Greek feast.

If you would not like your child to take part in any of the tasting activities during the feast or if your child has an allergy that the school is not already aware of, please speak to a member of staff.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to speak to us.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mrs Foster and Mrs Chadwick

Class 4 Homework

The children need to investigate two habitats in or around your garden and collect information about these. They then need to investigate two animals that they have found in these habitats.

The worksheets are attached below:

Fighting Fit

Today in our topic lesson we pretended to be injured soldiers and Mary Seacole in the Crimean War. We had lots of fun pretending to bandage each others wounds.

Class 4 Homework

This week children have been learning about co-ordinates. Homework includes some practise and a game that can be played with 2 or more players.

The digit cards referred to in the game will be given out with homework and children can use coloured pencils to mark on the grid rather than counters.

If you need any extra copies, please ask an adult in Class 4.

Homework will be given out after the Maths lesson on Thursday to be returned the following Wednesday.

Thank you.

POLITE REMINDER – NO DOGS ALLOWED

Please could we remind everyone again that dogs are not allowed on the school premises, particularly the playgrounds, under any circumstances. Thank you.

Spaghetti Maths 6th June 2016

The children enjoyed yet another fantastic Spaghetti Maths session today and Jonny had the following to say:

We investigated an interesting piece of mathematical wonder – the Mobius strip; which is one sided surface.

The children were asked how many sides/surfaces a piece of paper has; the most common answer to this was 2front and back, some of the children said 6 (knowing correctly that a sheet of paper is actually a 3 dimensional cuboid) – but for this exercise we just consider the large usable surfaces, the front and back.

 The children were challenged to

Draw a line down the centre of the paper without lifting their pen off the table; this is impossible because the paper has 2 distinct sides.

  1. See what happened when you cut a line through the centre of the paper (you are left with 2 halves – obviously!)

The children were then shown how to make a Mobius Strip – ask them how (or see the yellow take-home sheet for details)

They were then asked to repeat the tasks above

Draw a line down the centre – and they found that without moving the pen form the paper that the line covered both sides of the strip, showing that the shape did only have 1 surface.

  1. Cut a line down the centre and the strip did not fall into 2 pieces but stayed as one! Showing again one surface.

A great deal of making, cutting, drawing, remaking and investigating then ensued.

We also played a game called Quads (all to do with the number 4) – if you know the simple mathematical rule in the game you never lose! Your child/ren may be challenging you to a game of this, this evening.

If you want to know the rules just ask!!

 Until next week

Class 1 & 2 trip to West Midlands Safari Park

We’ve had a really busy half term and we hope that the children and staff have a well-earned break!

Mrs Johnson

Thank you!

Class One and Pre-School children had such a lovely time at the space party on Tuesday afternoon. The children had all made a space themed hat and enjoyed doing a little parade to show them off to each other. A game of ‘Musical Aliens’ was played – the children had to pull the funniest alien face when the music stopped playing! Pre-School had made up a little song about zooming to the moon and did really well singing the song to the children of Class One.

Thank you very much to all the parents of Class One and Pre-School children who donated such a lovely range of party food for the children to enjoy. A lot of time and effort had also gone into preparing lots of lovely homemade cakes and biscuits too. Thank you!
