Class 4 Homework

Today we have sent home part of a text that we have been reading online called Cosmo Mars. Please could the children finish reading Chapter 3 and then all of Chapter 4, A Distressing Letter, before Monday next week.

Making paper aeroplanes

In English this week we are looking at instructions. We are learning the importance of having instructions and how to follow them. Towards the end of the week we hope to write our own set of instructions.

Today we had an exciting lesson following a set of instructions. The children had no idea what we were going to make and just had to listen carefully to the step by step guidance I gave them. This was to show the importance of having a title. The children had no diagrams to follow which also made it very difficult. As you can imagine the first attempt at making paper aeroplanes was a disaster and a very good laugh!

After this we looked at instructions with a title, what you need and diagrams to help. This was much more helpful and we had great fun creating our paper aeroplanes! The children will bring their creations home to enjoy 🙂

Class 1, practised their balance and movement skills today. They had to collect treasure, cross perilous rivers and navigate high bridges!

Weekly News 07.10.16

Parents evening

Just a reminder that the Parents Evening booking system is now open on the website. If you are unable to attend on the available dates and times, please speak to your child’s class teacher(s) and they will endeavour to meet with you on a different day.

Punctuality and absence

We recognise that the closure of the school car park may have meant changes to your morning travel arrangements but we have seen a large increase in the number of children arriving at school late. Children should be in school for 8:55 when the register is taken. Our Education Welfare Officer from the Local Authority visits monthly and may issue ‘notices’ to parents/guardians if their child arrives late at school on a number of occasions.

Please could we also remind you to phone School by 9:30 if your child is off sick. Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Mrs Chadwick leaving

As you are probably aware, Mrs Chadwick is leaving at the end of this half term as she is moving away from Shropshire. If you wish to make a contribution towards a leaving gift there is a collection at the school office.

Residential trips

If you would like your child to take part in the Year 5/6 visit to Arthog or the Year 3/4 visit to Condover next year, please return the deposit by the end of next week. We need to confirm final numbers before the half-term holiday.

Class 2 update

We have had another busy week in Class 2.

English

The children have been writing their own versions of fairy tales this week. We started with picture cards to help inspire us and verbally told each other stories we had invented. We have spoken about the structure of stories and the importance of planning a clear beginning, middle and end. Year 2 children were challenged to identify past, present and future tense and they learned how to write in the past tense. We have worked hard with our punctuation use this week – year 1 have focussed on their use of capital letters and full stops whilst year 2 have also looked at this as well as using question marks and exclamation marks. Today we have written our final versions of our fairy stories!

Maths

This week’s focus has been subtraction.

Year 1 – have been learning that subtraction is also known as ‘taking away’. We have worked hard to write number sentences and using the correct symbol. The children have learned to use different methods to help them take away, using equipment, pictures and counting backwards. Today we have been identifying subtraction in word problems.

Year 2 – have been learning how to take away single-digit numbers from a two-digit number using a number line. They have also been subtracting using the context of money. We have taken away 10 from two-digit numbers using a hundred square – they recognised that we use the opposite method of addition and jump up the number square by one. Today we have been identifying subtraction in word problems.

Phonics

Year 1 – Have looked at the ‘ng’, ‘ai’ and ‘ee’ sounds this week.

Year 2 – Have focussed on the ‘r’ sound spelt ‘wr’.

Just a reminder that children are expected to have a full PE kit in school each week.

Geography

We have had fun with our topic this week and discussed what we would need if we went to the Polar Regions. The children thought of lots of brilliant ideas e.g. warm clothing, torches, food, shelter, etc. Some even suggested hot chocolate!

Science

In Science, we thought about plants and trees and which animals choose the Oak tree as their habitat. We have also looked at a range of different seeds and how these are dispersed e.g. the wind, on animal fur, etc.

Spellings

Here are this week’s spellings to be tested on Friday 14^th October.

Class 4 Update

English

This week Class 4 have been learning about the features of biographies and autobiographies. They have also looked at different word endings, many of which are in their spellings this week. The children are also practising varying the types of sentences they use in their writing.

Maths

In Maths Class 4 have been practising different methods of subtraction. They enjoyed making ‘maths museums’ one day to show us what they know already.

Science

The children are continuing to enjoy the electricity topic. They have tested a range of materials to see which ones conduct electricity. I also set them the challenge this week of making their own buzzer games!

Geography

The children finished their maps of the school grounds. We explored Shrewsbury using Google Maps this week in readiness for our visit there next Wednesday. The children used the computers to make their own maps of Shrewsbury, adding images and text boxes of points of interest.

ICT

The children have been exploring the Purple Mash games and activities.

Class 3 Homework – due in Friday 14th October

Dear Parents/Carers,

Class 3 have been set a homework on purplemash this week. Their homework is to create their own Marvellous Medicine and write the instructions of how to make it. This is reinforcing work we have done in class so children will know they need to use time and cause conjunctions, imperative verbs and adverbs if they can.

Your child has been taught how to use Purplemash this week and has been given their password. If they can not find this please let me know so I can print them another copy. The homework can be completed on laptop or iPad devices. If there is a problem and your child is unable to complete their homework online please let me know so I can supply them with a paper copy.

Class 3 Weekly Update

Class 3 have been working hard this week!

English: We have continued our work on George’s Marvellous medicine. The children have planned and written a diary entry in character as George. They have also written their own part of the story, imagining what would happen to Grandma if they gave her their medicine which they each created last week. We have looked at conjunctions and adverbs this week and will be having a more in depth focus on conjunctions next week.

Maths: We have been learning mental methods for addition this week. We have revised adding two 2 digit numbers mentally and have learned how to add 10s and 100s to three digit numbers by using our knowledge of place value to help us.

Science: We carried out our investigations which we had planned last week. We were very good at making sure our test was fair and our results were accurate.

RE: We have been thinking about how we can be a good neighbour to each other and have created our own recipes to explain what you will need.

PE: We have continued our gymnastic work and games work this week.

Computing: The children have learned how to log into and use purple mash this week. Please look out for homework being set on this.

Phonics this week

Over the last few days the children have looked at , listened to and written – ‘b’ ‘f’ ‘e’

When we write ‘b’ we say, ‘Down the laces, then over the toes.’ For ‘f’ we say ‘Down the stem and across the leaf.’ For ‘e’ we say ‘lift off the top and scoop out the egg.’
