Phonics – ‘n’ ‘p’

Over the last 2 days the children have looked at ‘n’ and ‘p’.

They have practised the sound each letter makes and had a go at writing them.

To write ‘n’ we say ‘Down Nobby and over his net’  and for ‘p’ we say ‘ down his plait and over the pirate’s face.’

Class 4 update

English

In English we have been working on the ‘Just So’ stories by Rudyard Kipling.  Today we began planning ideas for our own Just So stories ready for writing them next week.

Maths

The children have been learning about decimal numbers and how to order them, place them correctly on number lines and understand the effect of multiplying or dividing them by 10 and 100.

Geography

Following our walk around Bicton last week we focussed on map skills this lesson.  The children worked really hard to produce maps of the school grounds using aerial photographs.

Linked to this, in Art the children have been collaging pictures of things that they see on their journey to school using a variety of materials.

Science

Continuing with their work on electricity, the children made their own circuits this week and learnt how to draw circuit diagrams.  They also had to test a variety of circuits to see if they worked or not and make predictions about what might happen each time.

Class 3 Weekly Update

Class 3 have been working very hard this week!

English – We have continued reading George’s Marvellous Medicine which the children are really enjoying. We created a character description of Grandma and have learned about how to write instructions this week. The children have been identifying time conjunctions within instructions and have learned how to set out instructions in an organised way. This will lead into some work next week where the children will begin to write their own instructions.

Maths – We have continued our work on place value, using what we know about 3 and 4 digit numbers to help us solve problems. The year 3 children have been practising their reasoning skills, making sure they are able to explain how they found an answer and how they know it is right.I have to say their explanations are definitely improving. The year 4 children have been learning how to round numbers to the nearest 10 using number lines to help them and they have all worked independently on this which is fantastic!

Spelling – We are continuing to learn about the spelling rules for words ending in ‘le’. We have also been revising our understanding of vowels and consonants.

Geography – We have learned about the 8 compass points this week and have used them to describe the location of cities in the UK on a map.

Science – We have continued to revise our understanding of pushes and pulls this week in preparation for an investigation next week.

RE – We have begun our RE topic this week and the children have started to think about who is considered to be their neighbour and what christian’s believe about this.

French – We have learned how to greet each other and how to ask someone their name and how to respond to this question.

Computing – We have learned about how to stay safe online and how to google search things in a safe and effective way.

Condover Y3/4 residential

Year 3 and 4 children have been given a letter today regarding next year’s residential visit to Condover Hall.  If you would like your child to take part in the visit, please return the reply slip and £30 deposit as soon as possible.

Class 3 Homework – Due in Friday 30th September 2016

The homework this week is to support work we have been doing in class on Place Value. The children are now using their knowledge of Place Value to problem solve.

It is important for the children to be able to reason about their answers. Therefore you may like to ask them questions such as, How do you know this is the largest number you can make? How did you find the answer? What would happen if…..? etc. 

We always encourage the children to have a go independently before asking for help. If your child has had a go and they are finding it difficult, please feel free to support them and maybe just write a note on the homework saying that you did so.

Completion of homework is recognised and rewarded within school. Children who do not complete their homework are asked to complete it during a playtime.

Maths – positional language

Today Class 1 concentrated on using positional vocabulary.

Some children .used the laptops and interactive board to move the animals into different places.  They also helped to put the teddies on the bus and played a game of hiding teddy.

Maths Game you can play at home

We have been doing lots of work on place value recently.  The children have really enjoyed playing a game called ZAP which involves using their understanding of place value to help them take away.

I thought I would put an overview on here in case you wanted to play it with your child at home. It is a game that you can play with paper or with a calculator.

 

If your child is in Year 3 they must work with 3 digit numbers.

If your child is in Year 4, they must work with 4 digit numbers.

 

Give your child a number (make sure all the digits are different) – e.g. 432.

Tell them which number you would like them to ZAP (by zapping a number you are making it go to 0) – e.g. the 3.

Ask your child to write a take away sum to show what they have done (or type it into the calculator if playing the game that way) – e.g. 432 – 30 = 402

 

An extension is to ask your child to ZAP 2 numbers, e.g. ZAP the 4 and the 3.

They may write different number sentences for this, e.g.

432 – 400 – 30 = 2 or 432 – 430 = 2
