Class 4 Homework

This term, the children have been looking at biographies and autobiographies. We have read extracts from Boy and Going Solo by Roald Dahl, and Singing for Mrs Pettigrew by Michael Morpurgo.

Over the holidays, we would like children to write a biography on a person of their choice. It can be a family member, a pop star, an actor or a sports personality.

Please can homework be completed in children’s homework books and be returned to school by the first day back after the holidays.

Thank you for your support.

Counting and numbers to 20

The children in Class 1 have been practising counting to 20.  The Cuboid group looked at making the right stack of cubes to match their numbers cards.

You can help your children with numbers by looking at numbers on doors, car registration plates, numbered aisles in the supermarket, price tags etc.  Children love counting things, it could be the apples in the fruit bowl, the tins in the cupboard, shoes in the porch, socks in the wash basket etc.

This is also a good interactive activity to help children with their counting, number formations and number recognition – http://resources.hwb.wales.gov.uk/VTC/ngfl/ngfl-flash/numbers_eng/numbers_e.html

Last weeks phonics

Last week the children looked at and wrote the sounds   ‘l’  ‘h’   ‘sh’   ‘r’.

When we write ‘l’ we say ‘Down the long leg.’

For ‘h’ we say ‘Down the head to the hooves and over his back.’

For ‘sh’ we say slither down the snake, then down the  head, to his hooves and over his back.’

For ‘r’ we say ‘Down his back, then curl over his arm.’

We looked at words that begin/ end with the sounds and children enjoyed identifying if they had the letters in their own name.

Every day the children practise writing their name, some children are now having a go at writing their surname 🙂

Fire Fighter visit

The children were very excited today when they found out that we were going to have some very special visitors!

Fire Fighter Darren and John popped in with the fire engine to show the children.  The children had lots of questions to ask and it seems quite a few parents are Fire fighters..

We found out lots of things and hopefully the children can share this with you when they get home.  Fire Fighter Darren has set them homework – to check that the smoke alarm works at home.

Welcome to Miss Carr

Following interviews for Mrs Chadwick’s position, we are very pleased to have appointed Miss Eleanor Carr who will be teaching Class 4 alongside Mrs Foster after half-term. The children in Class 4 enjoyed a Maths lesson with Miss Carr earlier this month and she will be spending time in Class 4 to get to know the children before we break up.

Many thanks

Attempted abduction

We received the following information today from the Local Authority.

“There has been a recent attempted abduction of a pupil walking home from school in the Weston Rhyn area.  The police are involved.

Our Crime Prevention Officer, Ian Bartlett suggests some stranger-danger guidance in assemblies and to consider informing parents and advise pupils and students not to walk to/from school alone.”

We have spoken to all the children in each class this afternoon about stranger-danger. We discussed not running off from the adult/older child who they are walking with and reminded them not to speak to anyone who is a stranger to them.  We also discussed what to do if anyone approaches them and reminded them that they should tell an adult if they ever see someone or something which makes them feel unsafe.

If you have any concerns about the above, please do not hesitate to speak to me.

Parking

A letter has been sent home with children today (or they will bring it home on Monday) with a reminder that there is no parking on the car park after school other than after 5:00 on Tuesday.  This is to ensure children’s and adults’ safety.

Food Bank Donations

This Harvest time we are collecting for the Barnabas Food Bank.  Karen from the Food Bank visited school this morning with Clive and Laura from the Coop and the children were all very enthusiastic in their willingness to fill the box in the main entrance.  The Coop have offered to match the donations brought into school!

Cancelled Clubs

Please remember that there are NO CLUBS on Tuesday or Thursday next week because of Parents Evening  and there is no football club on Wednesday because of a tournament.

Halloween Disco

We look forward to seeing you all at the FOBs disco on Friday 21st.

Have a good weekend.

Year 1 – have been looking at ordinal numbers this week (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc) and answering questions about number lines. They have also recapped on estimating and what it means to make a sensible guess. Today we will be filling in missing numbers on a number line.

Year 2 – have been learning how to answer multiplication questions. We spoke about the different vocabulary for multiplication before we started to show working out using equipment, drawing pictures and arrays and finally writing multiplication sentences.

Year 2 – looking at the ‘n’ sound spelt ‘gn’ and ‘kn’.

Class 4 Trip to Shrewsbury

We had a lovely time today in Shrewsbury! We completed lots of activities as part of our work in Geography, comparing Bicton and Shrewsbury. We undertook traffic, foot count and shop surveys as well as considering advantages and disadvantages to living in Shrewsbury.
