Cross Country 10.03.17

We had a fantastic cross country session tonight and 47 children, over a third of the school, took part. The lovely, mild weather saw many children having to remove layers as you can see in the photo which was completely unrehearsed and I just happened to run past as some of the Class 1 girls were taking a breather! Soon after, the top of the goal post was completely obscured with many more sweatshirts and jackets being discarded!

Class 5 Weekly Update 10.03.17

English: We have continued reading our class novel Trash and children have completed several different activities this week including a reading comprehension based on the text.

Maths: Children have used formulae to find the area of triangles and rectangles and have applied this to finding the area of their own compound shapes. Towards the end of the week, we extended this to finding the volume of 3D shapes. Today we started to work through an assessment task completed earlier this week and we discussed how it is important to use an appropriate method/show appropriate workings.

Year 6s should be really proud of their hard work this week in Maths and their willingness to share and discuss their errors with their peers; we were able to talk through common mistakes and misconceptions and children were happy to share mistakes they had made so that everyone could learn from them. Well done Class 5!

History: Children have researched Winston Churchill and created fact files with a partner. Thank you to everyone who has been able to bring in some quite incredible WWII artefacts which children used to create a WWII museum. This work will be continued next week. Our governors had the opportunity to look at some of these artefacts prior to/after our Governing Body meeting this week and they were very impressed at the response to the topic from children and parents.

Well done to all Year 6s for the effort they put into their Blitz homework – it is lovely to see the children enjoying the WWII topic so much!

R.E.: This week, children have created some beautiful writing in R.E. based on our unit of work on Heaven – Our Special Place. We are looking forward to being able to display some of this work in school.

P.E.: Children continued their dodgeball sessions with Mr Bebb today.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Class 5 Homework 10.03.17

Children have been set a piece of Maths homework today to reinforce work we have done this week on finding area of shapes.  Hexagons group are expected to complete all of the sheet but children in Pentagons, Circles and Triangles do not have to complete the “Now try this!” task.  Please encourage your child to complete the task independently but it would be helpful if you could annotate the sheet if there are any parts which they needed support with. Thank you in advance for your support.

Parents’ Evenings – Cancelled Clubs

Just a reminder that the booking system is open on the website for our forthcoming Parents’ Evenings.  Thank you if you have already booked an appointment to speak to your child’s class teacher(s).  There will be no Film Club on Tuesday 21st or any clubs on Thursday 23rd.

Condover

The final Condover payment is due on Friday 24th March please.  We are in the processing of putting together an overview of the information shared/questions asked at yesterday’s parents’ meeting about Condover and we will send this home early next week together with the kit list.

Diary Dates

As you are hopefully aware, we have a very busy day on Friday 31st March and after Celebration Assembly every class will be taking part in the Mini Marathon on the school site.  Some children have already told us that they have quite a bit of sponsorship, which is fantastic news, and all monies raised will be spent on resources/equipment for the children.

The following day, on Saturday 1st April, we are organising a gardening day at school to really get things moving with the wildlife area (to the rear of the new eco-room.)  If you are able to spare a few hours on that Saturday, you will be warmly welcomed and refreshments will be provided by FOBs.  Details will follow in the next couple of weeks giving you an idea of the jobs that need doing so if you could save the date we would love to see you!

Hope you have a lovely weekend.

Class 3 Homework – due in Friday 17th March

Dear Parents/Carers,

Your child has been set some homework on purplemash – it’s a bit different this week as I have set them a game to play. This game will reinforce their understanding of fractions and assess their understanding so far. I have told children that they can play on it as many times as they want to but they must play on it at least once. They choose the level called ‘Pizza Rookie’ – please do not allow them to choose any other level as they will not have covered work relating to those levels.

The children who have recently joined Class 3 have been given their username and password on a laminated card which they need to keep safe. They have also come home with a letter which explains what purplemash is and how to access it.

If for any reason your child is unable to access the purplemash game at home, please could you write a note in their home-link book and I will find some time within school to allow them to complete their homework.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Barratt

Class 2 weekly update

English: To start with the children looked at more suffixes at the end of words e.g. er, ier and est. Then we have focussed on our senses and which parts of our bodies use the senses. The children then used their senses to describe a range of different settings for example, a beach, rainforest, waterfall and city.

Maths: This week the children have been multiplying. Year 1 have been learning to count in 2s, 5s and 10s and used these skills to sequence numbers. Year 2 started the week using equipment to find answers to multiplication questions, then moved onto drawing pictures to support them and today they have been using their number facts to help them.

Science: We looked at metal and plastic in Science this week, the children discussed the use of each material and identified if they are bendy, strong, stretchy etc.

History: The children enjoyed looking at the artist Paul Klee in topic and how he used 2D shapes to make a painting of a castle. They then had a go at recreating his piece of art using 2D shapes and watercolour paints.

Week 23

Class 3 Weekly Update

English: We have started to read ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ this week – which we are all thoroughly enjoying! The children have written a diary entry in character as Charlie, describing what it was like to find the golden ticket and they have done some character descriptions of the other ticket winners. They were very good at using the text to support their descriptions.

Maths: We have been learning about ‘tenths’ in maths this week and have been linking this to decimals. We have also been learning how decimals link to measurement and have been putting this into practise whilst carrying out some measuring investigations.

Science: We carried out an investigation this week involving fizzy drinks! We were finding out the weight of carbon dioxide in fizzy drinks to help us establish which one was the fizziest. The children are improving their skills of evaluating their investigation once they have carried it out.

RE: We have been learning about the timeline of the Bible in order to help us understand when Jesus was alive.

Computing: The children have been planning how to use the drawing features on publisher to create their own poster.

Well done Class 3 for another great week and an extra special well done for being so well behaved when we went to Chester! Enjoy your weekend!
