The Twins Have Arrived!

As you may have already heard, we are pleased to announce the arrival of Miss Moran’s long-awaited twin boys! We are sure you will join us in sending Olivia and Gareth huge congratulations on the birth of Alfie and Arthur.

On Monday, we started to look at the relationships between characters in Charlotte’s Web. This involved searching for evidence in the book which helps us to build a picture of how Charlotte, Wilber and Fern feel about each other. We gathered evidence in groups and recorded quotes from the book. Today, we explored features of poetry. We looked at several poems and found examples of poetic features, such as alliteration, personification, similes and repetition. The children will move on to planning and writing their own poems based on friendships.

In Maths we had another lesson carrying out a mental arithmetic exercise. The children had 25 minutes to answer questions and we then worked through the answers altogether, paying close attention to how we arrived at our answers and the different methods used.

I have found another fun game that I think will help improve times tables skills – click here to play!

Today, some children spent time revising written subtraction methods and also applying their skills to problems solving exercises. Some children completed an activity where they had to record costs of items from a garden centre and total up the costs using the column addition method.

In PE today, we used different parts of our bodies to mark out numbers and letters. For example, we used our elbows, knees, hips and feet to mark out the letters in our names on the floor. This was done to music and the children had to create a really smooth sequence to demonstrate to others.

French involved revising the vocabulary for items in the classroom. The children were set the task of creating signs for different objects such as pens, books, paper etc. The children are making good progress in their pronunciation of vocabulary.

This afternoon, we continued our art work from last week. The children added watercolour paints to their sketches of the barn from Charlotte’s Web. We made sure we thought hard about techniques such as adding a small amount of water to the paper before adding colour and using light strokes.

The class have been reading Chapters 7, 8 and 9 of Charlotte’s Web so far this week. It is lovely to see so many children keen to read on in the story and to find out more about the story each week.

Well done Class 4 – you have all worked very hard.

See you next week,

Mrs Conde

Read, Write Inc – ‘b’

Today the children looked at the letter ‘b’.  They practised saying this bouncy sound.  They looked at pictures and objects of things beginning with ‘b’ – ball, bat, bag and boot.

To write the letter we say ‘Down the laces, to the heal and over the toe.’

Harvest Celebration Assembly

As you are hopefully aware, it is our Harvest Celebration Assembly on Friday 20th October. As well as sharing in the children’s achievements this term, we will also be saying thanks for any Harvest donations you are able to offer.

Last year we collected a fantastic amount of food items which were donated to the Shrewsbury Food Bank.  If every child could bring in just one item that would be amazing and all donations of tinned provisions, packets, fruit and vegetables etc will be very gratefully received.

Please could you leave any donations on the table at the main office and we thank you in advance for your support.

Read Write Inc ‘u’

Today the children looked at the letter ‘u’.  They practised saying this bouncy sound and looked at pictures beginning with ‘u’.

The children  then had a go at forming the letter, when we write ‘u’ we say ‘Down and under the umbrella, up to the top and down to the puddle.’

All letters and sounds covered can be found here:

A letter will be sent out next week about harvest donations.

Class 3 Weekly Update

English: This week the Year 2 children have been focusing on the different types of sentences – exclamations, questions and statements. They have been learning how to recognise these and have had a go at writing some of their own, making sure they punctuate them correctly.

The Year 3 children have been learning how to edit and improve their work. They have done some writing based on the film ‘Up’ and have learned how to choose a sentence they have written and make it better. They have also been proof-reading their work checking for punctuation errors.

Maths: This week the children have been learning how to add ‘ones’ to a number. The Year 2 children have been adding ones to a 2 digit number and the Year 3 children have been adding ones to a 3 digit number. The children have been doing this practically using base 10 equipment as well as using number lines to help them.

Science: This week the children did an investigation to see what materials can change shape and what you can do to them to change their shape – e.g. squash them, bend them, twist them etc. They recorded their results in a table and were asked to explain what they had found out.

History: The children did some writing in character as Christopher Columbus. They had to imagine they were Columbus at sea during a storm and they had to write a message home explaining how they were feeling as well as telling people what they had found on their travels.

RE: The children did an activity on the Five Pillars of Islam where they had to explain what they are.

Computing: The children applied all the skills they have learned recently to create a poster.

PE: The children have continued with their dance and games lessons this week.

Class 2 Weekly update

English: In English this week we have continued to read our story books through Read Write Inc (RWI) and also looked in detail at using capital letters for names of people and places. Today the children had the opportunity to independently write about different characters. They were encouraged to use lots of adjectives in their sentences to make their writing interesting.

Maths: We have started subtraction this week and have looked at finding one less than a given number. The children have used lots of equipment to help support them with their taking away. They are getting confident with recording neatly in their maths books on squared paper.

Science: In Science the children learned about how the different seasons affect animals. We looked at robins closely and how they adapt to each season. We also discussed how some animals, such as hedgehogs, hibernate in the winter months and what this means.

History: The children had a fun, practical history lesson yesterday. They looked at a range of different materials and discussed how different toys are made from various materials. They then decided which materials their toys are made from and what they used to be made from in the past. The children then had lots of fun making wooden spoon puppets (photos of these below).

Spellings: Spellings to be tested Friday 13th October. Please be aware that some spellings may be repeated occasionally as I link the spellings with what they have been learning in RWI.

Spellings 6.10.17

Homework: The children are coming home with a piece of Maths homework this week focusing on one more and one less than a given number. Please feel free to write any notes on their homework about the amount of support needed. Homework is due in on Friday 13th October.

Circles/Squares: squares and circles 1 more 1 less homework

Triangles/Cuboids: cuboids and triangles 1 more 1 less homework

Have a lovely weekend 🙂
