Year 2 Homework

Dear Parents/Carers,

The Year 2’s have been asked to complete pages 38 and 39 in their SAT Buster Maths Reasoning book this week.

Please could this be handed in on Monday 26th March so that I can set the children further work for over Easter before I leave for Condover on Tuesday 27th March.

There were a few children who didn’t have their book in school, we have had a good look for it but would appreciate it if you could look at home also.

Thank you,

Miss Barratt

Class 4 weekly update

English – This week we have been evaluating a range of adverts, looking at how the information is presented and analysing the key features.  They used this to then plan, edit and publish their own advert based on the weapons the children were given in ‘The lion, the witch and the wardrobe’.  They have worked really hard to design their own adverts and they all look great.

Maths – This week we have been looking at bar charts (Year 4) and line graphs (Year 5) and drawing and interpreting the data provided.  They have also been using bar charts and line graphs to solve problems and extracting information from a table.

Science – We have been identifying the effects of friction, using bikes and a range of surfaces to compare and explain where there would be more/less friction and why.  We had lots of good discussion about this in class.

Geography – We have been describing and understanding the key aspects of earthquakes and what some of the effects of these.  The children were very interested in the pictures we looked at showing places devastated by earthquakes.  They also worked in groups to make their own seismograph out of a tin can to record their own seismic waves.

Homework – To design their own advert. Please find this in the link: Friday 16th March 2018

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 23rd March.

Class 2 Weekly Update

English: As well as Read Write Inc at the beginning of the week, the children have been looking at non-fiction texts. They have been looking at information texts about tigers and finding out interesting facts. They have learned about the key features of a non-fiction text e.g. headings, sub-headings, pictures, labels and captions, etc and had a go at writing their own.

Maths: In Maths we have moved onto measuring and comparing lengths and heights. Today the children were using non-standard units to measure objects e.g. how many cubes long is this pencil? Whiteboard? etc.

Science: In Science the children had a lots of fun building The Three Little Pigs houses out of a range of different materials. They were given junk modelling, Lego, straw and sticks and had to make the houses working with a group. The children were encouraged to think about which was the best material due to its properties e.g. which was the strongest? Which was bendy? Which would withstand the wind? etc.

Geography: The children learned about the different layers of a rain forest this week and what we would find in each layer, e.g. in the Forest floor layer we would find leaf litter and animals such as beetles and other insects, in the Understory layer we would find shrubs and frogs and snakes, in the Canopy layer we would find tall trees and animals such as sloths and toucans and in the Emergent layer we would find the extremely tall trees and butterflys and Eagles.

D&T: Just a reminder that on Tuesday the children will be trying a variety of different fruits and vegetables. I have had a few slips back however if I do not hear back I will make the assumption that your child is OK to try all fruits and vegetables. Please let me know if there is anything your child cannot try by Monday. Thank you!

Spellings: To be tested Friday 23rd March 2018.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Our focus story this week has been Goldilocks and the 3 Bears.  We have based our Literacy and Maths around this.

In Maths the children have looked at capacity, they worked out which bowl / cup belonged to each bear and explained why.  They then investigated the capacity of different containers to work out which one would hold the most / least.

The children have acted out the story and in Child Initiated time had the opportunity to use the story props independently.   They have sequenced the story and had a go at writing it out.   The children have also had a go at writing a letter of apology from Goldilocks to the 3 Bears.

Class 1 made porridge, they used their senses to describe what it looked like, smelt like and tasted like.  We added different ingredients to each bowl and the children were able to talk about whether it was sweet, sour etc.

Some children chose to use the chalks to make a map from Goldilocks house to the 3 Bear’s cottage.

Read Write Inc

The children have continued to revisit Set 1 sounds and used them to write words and sentences.  We are starting to see a lot more children have the confidence to write in Child initiated time and show good use of  their phonics knowledge to sound out and write words.

Some children have revisited igh – fly high, ow – blow the snow and oo – poo at the zoo.   For each trigraph/digraph the  children have written their own independent sentence with words containing the sound.

Class 5 weekly update 16.03.18

English:

This week children have analysed the features of explanation texts and written their own explanation texts based on our novel Phoenix.  They have also completed reading assessments which we will be going through with them in class before the end of term.

Maths:

In Maths, children have been finding the volume of cubes, cuboids and highly-complex 3D shapes composed of several cubes/cuboids.  It has been wonderful to see the children’s progress during this unit of work and seeing them apply previous learning on  area and perimeter.  They have also completed assessments, which we have started to look through and will continue to work through some of the questions next week.

Science:

In Science this week, we carried out a simulation to show the phases of the Moon using children’s written plans from last week. Children then completed an independent piece of writing to explain to other children how to carry out the simulation, which reinforced our work in English on explanation texts.

Geography:

Children completed their analysis and research of capital cities in North America.  Next week we will start to make comparisons between specific areas in the UK and North America.

RE:

In RE this week, we started a new unit on Salvation. We discussed why the resurrection is so important to Christians and used an artwork freeze to revise the ‘big story.’

PE:

We have continued our gymnastics work using the apparatus and also made the most of the sunshine to do one PE session on ball skills outside.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.
