Class 5 update

English

This week the children were given the task of continuing the story of our novel study ‘Phoenix’ from where we have read up to so far.  As well as making predictions about what they thought would happen next, their writing included devices to create atmosphere and the use of dialogue.  The children finished the week by continuing to read the story and see if their predictions were correct!

Maths

This week in maths Year 6 have worked on ratio and proportion.  Year 5 have worked on angles including the use of protractors and calculating missing angles on straight lines.

Geography

This week the children chose a specific location in North America to compare and contrast with Shrewsbury.  They researched their chosen locality and made notes on information such as population, landscape, climate, tourism, culture or economy.  This information will be used next week to write an extended piece comparing the 2 localities.

RE

The children continued using an art frieze and Luke’s gospel to revise the crucifixion and resurrection and write in their own words.

Computing

This week the children did some programming using Logo.  They worked on drawing rectangles, triangles, circles and then other shapes using the programming tool.

Class 4 weekly update

English – This week we have been looking at features and language used in newspapers and the children have started to plan a newspaper report based on the battle between Peter and the wolf in the class novel study.  We will continue with these next week and publishing them using the laptops.  The children have also worked hard with their reading and writing assessments this week.  Well done!

Maths – This week we have been reading and interpreting information in tables, timetables and graphs.  The children have been solving a range of reasoning problems and explaining their answers carefully.

Geography – We have been describing and understanding the key aspects of earthquakes and using maps to locate the countries affected.  The children designed their own posters about how to stay safe during an earthquake.

RE – This week we have been focussing on the run up to Easter and when Jesus washed his disciples feet.  The children discussed what Jesus washing the disciples feet teaches Christians and how Christians could follow the example of Jesus being a servant.

Homework will be set on Monday 26th March and will be due in after the Easter holidays.

Spellings – to be tested on 20th April (after the holidays).

Class 2 Weekly Update

English: The children have continued with their RWI books Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and yesterday the children were thinking about where the tiger in our class story had come from. We decided he had escaped from the zoo! To help the zoo find him, the children were asked to make a missing poster including lots of details about the tiger.

Maths: In Maths this week, the children have been learning to measure using a ruler in centimetres. They have measure lots of objects and identified items that are shorter than 20cm and longer than 20cm. We then moved onto using a metre ruler, discussing that this is made up of 100cms and thinking about objects that are longer than 1m and shorter than 1m.

Geography: We have now finished our topic on Jungles and Rainforests and to show what the children can remember about their learning, they made little booklets including as much information as possible.

D & T: The children really enjoyed D&T on Tuesday. They tasted lots of different fruits and vegetables and discussed which was their favourite. I was very impressed with children trying new fruits and vegetables that they hadn’t tried before e.g. Mango, passion fruit, etc.

Spellings: Class 2 will be tested on their new spellings when we come back from the Easter holidays on Friday 20th April 2018.

Spellings 23.3.18

Have a great weekend!

The Ugly Duckling

Our focus story for this week and next is ‘The Ugly Duckling’.  We have linked the story to understanding of the world and found out about the life cycle of a duck, the children then cut out and completed a life cycle and added captions or sentences to explain it.   We also linked this with signs of spring and new birth.

In PSED we discussed why the Duckling felt so sad at the beginning of the story, and talked about how we should treat others.

Next week we will focus on the story structure, complete a story map, act out the story and have a go at writing it out in our own words.  The children will also be decorating their own Eggs, taking part in a duckling egg hunt and learning the Ugly Duckling song.
