Class 3 Weekly Update

English: We have read a few more chapters of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory this week and have got up to the part where Charlie finds the last golden ticket. We had great fun imagining what Charlie would have felt like by going on a hunt to find our own golden tickets that had been hidden around the school. The children then wrote a diary in character as Charlie, explaining how they found the golden ticket and how they feel about it.

Maths: We have continued with our fraction work this week. We have been learning about equivalent fractions using lots of visual images to help us. The Year 2’s have been learning how one half is equivalent to two quarters and have been proving this in different ways. They year 3’s have been using a fraction wall to help them identify equivalent fractions and then have been challenged to identify any patterns they notice in the fractions – for example, 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 4/8  – identifying that the numerator is half of the denominator.

Science: We have begun our new topic of ‘Rocks and Fossils’. We spent some time exploring different rocks this week and discussing similarities and differences between them. The children then used pastels to draw some labelled pictures to identify what they are like.

History: We have been finding out about the countries the Romans invaded and when. We have been identifying these countries on a map and seeing how the Roman Empire expanded over time.

RE: The children have been writing about the story of Jonah this week.

Computing: The children have continued to develop and practise their programming skills this week through the programme ‘scratch’.

French: We have started to learn the names of the days of the week.

PE: The children have continued with their gym and games lessons this week.

Maths – Year 5’s have been adding and subtracting decimals with the same number of decimal places. Year 4’s have been rounding decimals and finding halves and quarters of numbers.

Gardening morning

Just a reminder that we have a gardening morning tomorrow – Saturday 28th April – if you are able to spare a couple of hours.  Thank you in advance to FOBs for providing refreshments.

Well done Mr and Mrs Bowes

We would like to say well done to Mr and Mrs Bowes who both ran the London Marathon last weekend in exceptionally warm weather!

‘Show and tell’ session – Thursday 10th May

At the end of the school day on Thursday 10th May, we would like to invite parents/guardians to come into school to look at their child’s/children’s books with them.  This will allow parents to see what their child has been doing since the start of term and give children chance to talk about their work with their parents/guardians – this will be a nice opportunity for children to share their achievements, especially for those who did not come to parents’ evening in March. For children staying to after-school clubs, parents are welcome to pop into class when they collect their child/children at 4:30.

Royal Wedding – Red, white and blue day – Friday 18th May

On Friday 18th May, we would like all children to come to school wearing red, white and blue to celebrate the wedding of Harry and Meghan. The school kitchen are putting on a special Royal Wedding Lunch menu and children will be taking part in royal wedding-inspired activities during the day. We may even have a mock wedding of our own!

Clubs – provision and payments

Our extended-schools provision is excellent value for money in comparison to other settings and caters for a range of children’s interests. This term we will be reviewing the range of clubs provided, as attendance at some clubs has decreased since Christmas and is not sustainable in the long-term.  Please could we ask that clubs are paid for promptly and we are grateful to those parents who always pay for clubs on time.  Letters will be sent out next week where club fees have not been paid for a number of weeks as our school budget cannot meet these costs. Thank you

Special menu – Thursday 3rd May

Next Thursday the kitchen will be serving a special Fun at the Fair menu of:

Hot dogs (including veggie option)

Beefburger

Jacket potatoes

Home-school communication

If your child is unable to take part in PE or go outside to play at break or lunchtime, please ensure that your child’s teacher or the school office have been informed.

Diary dates

Please keep an eye on the calendar for forthcoming events this term.  Next week, a paper newsletter will be sent home detailing important dates and events this term.

Letters out – reminder

If you have not already done so, please can you return the permission slip regarding sun-cream. Thank you

We hope you all have a nice weekend.

Class 2 Weekly Update

English: Linking to our story ‘Owl Babies’, the children received a letter from one of the owls this week and were challenged to write a reply to the owl reassuring them and telling them not to worry. They have also had a go at describing the setting of the story today.

Maths: The children have been recapping on division this week. They have had very practical lessons, sharing objects into equal groups. Children that have wanted more of a challenge have had a go at problem solving and reasoning. They have also been learning how to double and halve amounts.

Science: In Science the children were thinking about their senses and which body part they use for each sense. They also had to describe the job of each sense.

History: We have been learning about the features of seaside holidays this week. Some children had a go at writing a seaside poem and some children had to pretend they were on a seaside holiday and describe their time through a postcard.

PE: The children have been developing their ball skills this week, practising throwing and catching, independently and with a partner.

Art: In Art, we looked at the artist Monet and how he creates garden scenes using a dabbing technique with paint. The children were given cotton buds and asked to create a seaside scene using this technique. I was very impressed with the beautiful artwork produced!

Read Write inc

We have continued to revise all sounds taught.  The children are working hard at segmenting and blending and this is improving their confidence when reading.

This week we have focused on:

ir- whirl and twirl and er – a better letter

ar – start the car

The children have verbally formed sentences using words with these sounds in and many have independently written their own sentences.
