Class 3 Weekly Update

English: This week we have continued to look at the features of persuasive writing. The children have been looking at slogans, logos and rhetorical questions and have been challenged to come up with some of their own for a variety of different products as a way of preparing them to create their own for their chocolate bar design. They have also written a description of a holiday destination as a way of trying to persuade me to visit there. They were focusing on using exaggerated adjectives and personal features.

Maths: We have moved onto division this week. The Year 2’s have been focusing on dividing by 2 and have been solving a variety of reasoning problems related to this. The Year 3’s have been learning how to partition two digit numbers to help them divide and then moved onto the simple bus stop method. At the end of the week we discussed remainders and this is something we will continue to focus on next week.

History: The children had great fun this week pretending to be Roman soldiers. They had to march in a Roman soldier formation and create other formations such as ‘the tortoise’ and ‘the wedge’. They have also been learning about Roman shields this week and the significance of the symbols on them.

Art: Our Roman helmets are coming along nicely, the children have done a layer of white paper on them this week so they will be ready to paint next week.

PE: The children have enjoyed their tennis and swimming lessons this week. We have also spent some time practising for sports day.

RE: The children have begun their new topic on creation.

Science – Planting Beans

Yesterday we started our ‘Plants’ topic in Science. The children enjoyed planting beans and then writing a set of instructions, explaining how to plant beans.

Class 5 weekly update

We had a very busy and exciting first week back in Class 5!

English

We continued our novel study of Goodnight Mister Tom and children wrote the most amazing diary entries from the perspective of Willie. They were asked to show his changing emotions as he faced having to go home to London and many of their diary entries were so emotive they moved Class 5 adults to tears – what a fabulous start to the new half term!

Maths

Year 6s continued to tackle mixed problems, to consolidate many of the skills learnt over the past year, with a particular focus on converting units of measure. Year 5s completed their work on decimals and practised multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000.

Science

Children started to present their half-term homework on Sir Isaac Newton and it was wonderful to see the children’s pride in sharing their hard work with the rest of the class.

Enrichment Activities

Year 5s had a fantastic day at Adcote School last Wednesday and enjoyed a range of bushcraft activities.  They have now been given the task of creating a display to show off the activities which they took part in. Photos of the day will be uploaded in the next couple of days.

On Thursday, Year 6s were visited by D & T staff from The Corbet School who set them a challenge with specific rules and criteria. They had a super morning and they will be writing letters to The Corbet to say thank you for visiting us.

History

Year 6s have been researching the role of the Home Guard during World War 2.

Sports Day Preparation

Please can children ensure that they have their PE kit, including trainers, in school all week. Thank you

Class 4 weekly update

English – We have looked at the key features of a newspaper report and planned and written our own reports based on the wedding of Zeus in ‘Who let the god’s out?’  We have focussed particularly on ensuring the headline is short and snappy, effective use of paragraphs to describe what happened and included quotations, captions/photos, facts and opinions using the text to support our ideas.

Maths – Year 4’s have been finding lines of symmetry and completing a symmetrical figure.  Year 5’s have been calculating angles on a straight line and calculating angles around a point.

Topic – We have been understanding the factors that decided the power of the Ancient Greek city states.  The children were split into groups to plan an argument for one of the opinions, e.g. the long walls, navy, army, slaves.  They used information in groups to plan their argument and presented this to the rest of the class.

RE – We started our new topic ‘What do Christians learn from the creation story?’  The children discussed what ‘temptation’ means and discussed/wrote about who is being tempted and by what.

Art – Designing and making a Greek patterned tile in a mosaic style.

Spellings – to be tested on Friday 15th June –   Spellings 8-6-18

I hope you’ve all had a good week – I’ve heard that you have all been working very hard!

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Thomas
