Class 3 Weekly Update

English: We have written a letter to Willy Wonka this week in character as Charlie Bucket saying thank you for our visit to the chocolate factory.

We have also done our history lesson through English where we learned about Boudicca and her rebellion against the Roman army. The children wrote some fantastic speeches in character as Boudicca trying to persuade her tribe to join her in fighting the Romans.

Maths: The children have been practising their subtraction skills this week and have moved onto solving missing number problems. The Year 2’s have been solving worded problems linked to this and have been introduced to the pictorial column method. The Year 3 children have been practising the column method when re-grouping is required.

Science: We carried out an investigation this week. We wanted to see if a shadow would change size when we moved the light source further away and how this would affect it.

Art: We are getting close to finishing our Roman helmets! We have painted everything and now they just need to be assembled!

Other highlights of this week include transition day and practising for celebration assembly.

Just to note, the children have not been set any spellings or homework this week. They have been given a copy of the song we are going to sing in celebration assembly to practise at home. We are using an oompa loompa backing track from youtube which can be found here – https://youtu.be/XfUxxQ11EWY

Year 6 SATs Results – Tuesday 10th July

There seems to have been some confusion over children receiving their SATs results on Tuesday.  As many of the Year 6s are at The Corbet tomorrow, I very kindly offered to give them their results at the end of the day tomorrow rather than them wait until Wednesday.  This is completely optional and children are welcome to wait until Wednesday morning.

Thank you.

Class 5 update

Class 5 have had a busy week with many children involved in Arthog, the Brass Extravaganza and the Area Sports.

English

This week the children prepared for and carried out a debate on where the character Willie from Goodnight Mr Tom should be placed following his stay in hospital.  All of the children joined in well.

The children did some work on circles such as measuring the radius, diameter and circumference.  The Year 5 children have done some problem solving this week involving decimals and percentages.

History

The children have learnt about Anne Frank by reading extracts from her diary and exploring her secret annex online.

Science

Children not out at Arthog have carried out a project on colour blindness.

Miss McMullans Last Day

Apologies for the late photos!

Last week Class 2 said goodbye to Miss McMullan. We had a picnic in the afternoon and played some parachute games. All the children made a thank you card and are very sad to see her go but we wish her the best of luck in her new job!

Class 2 Weekly Update

English: This week, we have been continuing with Not Now, Bernard. The children have had fun sequencing the story and some children have even written their own alternative ending to the story. We then looked at how the story has lots of short sentences so decided that we could write better sentences and extended them using and, but and because.

Maths: We have moved onto shape this week. The children have identified 3D shapes and their names and sorted them into groups according to their properties. We also walked around school to identify 3D shapes in everyday objects. We have also recapped on 2D shapes and their names. The children have also been practising their reasoning and problem solving skills.

Science: In Science, the children were learning names of common garden plants. Then they designed their own gardens using the plants they have identified previously.

RE: We identified plants and why they were created by God. The children came up with great ideas! We thought about what plants are used for e.g. food, shelter and making things.

PE: The children have continued to practise their throwing and catching skills.

Spellings: To be tested Friday 13th July 2018.

Spellings 6.7.18

Have a great weekend!

Class 4 weekly update

English – We focused on Chapter 19 this week and discussed what happened with Elliot and the wishing pearl in the story.  The children talked about whether a wishing pearl would be a good or bad thing and explained their reasoning.  They then planned and wrote a debate discussing all the reasons for/against a wishing pearl and shared them with the rest of the class.  They had lots of great ideas to share!

Maths – This week we have been working on converting units of measurement.  The children have looked at measures including kilograms/grams, kilometres/metres, millimetres/metres, millilitres/litres.  They have also been converting metric and imperial units of measure.

Topic – The children worked in groups to research an aspect of the Greek Olympics, looking at the different sports they did and the celebrations/entertainment.  They will be presenting their findings to the rest of the class next week.

RE – We have been looking at the ten commandments and what they mean.  The children then made up a modern set of the ten commandments relating to how to live in the world today.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 13th July

Homework – Solving measuring problems (in their homework books).

Have a lovely weekend,
