Read Write Inc phonics

This week the children have looked at ‘v’ and ‘y’.

For ‘v’ we say – ‘down a wing,up a wing’

For ‘y’ we say – ‘Down a horn, up a horn and under the yak’s head.’

v           y

Each day we do word time activities (segmenting / blending / making CVC words) that link to all the sounds we have covered so far.  Here is a fun game that you may wish to print out and play with your child at home:

Here are all the word time activity booklets that match the sounds covered so far:

Class 2 Weekly Update 16/11/18

It has been another lovely week with my Class 2 Superheroes.
In English we have been reading new stories together in our RWI groups. Every child is taking a lot of pleasure from their own reading as well as that of their peers. They have probably made this evident to you when reading their stories at home.
The children have been trying to improve their writing with adjectives and simple conjunctions. They wrote for purpose about their Chester Zoo trip as a diary entry and used talk for writing beforehand in order to compose their sentences from their very vivid memories of the day. Towards the end of the week our spelling and grammar focus was using exclamation marks. They then went onto using them in a comic strip format involving their favourite superhero’s dialogue.
In maths, we have started chanting and singing our two times tables. We have been learning how to record subtraction number stories as number sentences after using practical scenarios to help us. We have also had a focus on working through both addition and subtraction number sentences systematically explaining their reasoning along the way. All of the children have contributed so well during lesson starters involving mental maths and problems solving with real life contexts with their maths partners.
In Design and Technology the children are in the initial stages of building their class house made from various pieces of cardboard. They have taken real ownership of it in their small groups and have really thought hard about its structure, and which shaped boxes would complement other parts best. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next for it!
The children did wonderfully well again with their spellings today. The new lists have gone into their books today for next Friday. Thank you for supporting your children at home with them.
An enormous congratulations to Cerys for being Class 2’s winner of Bicton’s creative writing competition. Well done also to everybody who entered. We are so proud of you and your entries.
Thank you so much for your continued support and have a lovely weekend together.

FOBS Writing Competition

Hayley from Shrewsbury Library visited this morning to announce the winners and runners up of the Planet Superheroes writing competition. She explained how she and her colleagues were very impressed with all the entries when they judged them last week and all entries will be going up on display in the Library in the next couple of weeks. Thank you to Karen and Barbie for coming along to present the prizes this morning and for all their hard work in arranging the competition.

A big well done to the winners in each class: Benji, Cerys, Matilda, Ione, Charlie and Ffion. Well done also to the runners up: Aston, Harry S, Charlie B, Sophie and Tommy.

A selection of photos of the writing competition prize-giving and of Children In  Need will be uploaded over the weekend.

Class 1 and Nursery nativity letter

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Class 6 update

English

The children enjoyed writing their own ideas for the end of a chapter in our novel study this week.  We read up to a dramatic part of the story and then stopped.  The children had to predict what they thought would happen next and write it in the style of the author.

Maths

We have continued our work on fractions looking at ordering and comparing them by converting them all to the same common denominator.

Science

The children finished their work on who they think should be on the new £50 note.

Geography

The children continued researching and describing the different types of mountains and how they are formed.

Class 3 weekly update

In English this week the children have been identifying features of a recount and identifying time conjunctions (e.g. first, then, next), conjunctions (e.g. because, and, but) and the writers thoughts and feelings.  They then used these features to plan their own recount about their visit to Chester Zoo last week, remembering to make notes in chronological order.  The children wrote some very detailed plans and we look forward to reading their recounts next week.  In Read, Write, Inc ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ group have been working through the stories ‘Lost’ and ‘In the sun’.  The main focus for those working independently has been using the past and present tenses correctly and using them consistently in a descriptive piece of writing.

In maths the children have been focusing on subtracting a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number.  They have used a range of apparatus such as Base 10 and the number line to support them with their working out.  They have also been using their number bonds to 10 to subtract more effectively by partitioning the numbers on the number line.

In science this week we have been discussing and describing the importance of hygiene and understanding some of the ways we can stay hygienic.  The children all had a very good understanding of how they can stay hygienic, like washing their hands with soap, brushing their teeth, cleaning their ears and washing themselves.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 23rd November

Have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Thomas & Miss Moran

pattern and symmetry

This week we have continued to look at patterns and symmetry.  We linked some our work to some of the creatures that we saw at Chester Zoo.  The children had a go at making symmetrical butterflies, just like the ones that we saw and adding pattern blocks to make the animal shapes.

We have also looked at the Festival of Diwali and the children have created symmetrical mandalas and added mendi patterns to their hand outlines.

Here is the symmetry game the children have played this week –  https://www.topmarks.co.uk/symmetry/symmetry-matching
