Class 6 Update

English

This week we began our new novel study – “Ghost Soldier” by Theresa Breslin.  The children read the first chapter and created pieces of art work representing their interpretation of it.  They then used the ideas from Chapter 1 to write poetry using a range of poetic features.

Maths

This week we continued our work on fractions.  The children have worked on dividing fractions by whole numbers and on finding fractions of amounts.

History

We began our World War I topic this week by researching which countries were involved in the war and their alliances.  The children located the countries involved on a map of Europe.

Art

The children began work on a global canvas project.  In groups they began to design their interpretation of an endangered animal and how it could be saved.

New term

It was lovely to welcome the children back to Class 1 after the Christmas holiday. Thank you for putting so many lovely moments on Tapestry, the children enjoying sharing their activities with the rest of the class.

Here is a link to our new topic web: – Tell me a story

This week we have listened to the story and song of ‘The Gingerbread Man’.  We will be basing lots of our Maths, literacy, art and role play around this story.

Phonics:   New digraphs this week have been ‘ng –  ‘Thing on a string’ and ‘nk’ – ‘I think I stink’

ng           nk

Maths – This week we have concentrated on numbers 1-5 / 1-10  / 1-20.  They children have counted out amounts, ordered them from smallest to largest and matched up Gingerbread Men to the right trays.

Breakfast Club earlier opening time

To meet parent demand, there is now the option to drop children off at Breakfast Club at 7:40 am for a cost of £2.20.  If your child is arriving at 7:45 am or later, the current cost remains at £2.00.

Welcome back

We hope you all had a good break over Christmas and New Year.

Christmas raffle

Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets for our Christmas raffle. We raised a fantastic £358 which will be put towards new literacy resources.

School uniform

Just a reminder that children are not allowed to wear trainers for school. If you have any questions regarding our uniform expectations, please do not hesitate to speak to me. Thank you

PE kit

Children are unlikely to be doing PE the first day back but        it is helpful if children can have their kit in school all week to allow for any changes to the normal PE timetable.

Medication

Please can children bring in any prescribed medication that was taken home over Christmas.

Thank you

Class 3 weekly update

This week the children have been completing their DT topic based on  ‘Houses’.  They looked at and described different houses from this country and from around the world, describing the features, such as the size and shape.  Then they investigated ways of creating interior features for a house – a door on hinges, making a door by scoring, a picture frame and designing wallpaper.  They were given a design brief from Erik the elf and were asked to design and make a house including; one bedroom, a nice living room with a big fireplace and chimney and to use red and green decorations.  The children then spent time thinking carefully about how they would design their house and then used a range of materials to make their own elf house.  They had lots of fun making these yesterday….lots of mess but they all enjoyed themselves!

A huge thank you to all the children for their fantastic nativity productions this week!  They have all worked so hard over the last few weeks to learn their lines and songs.  Thank you too for supporting your children to learn their lines at home.  We hope you have all enjoyed watching their performances as much as we have.

We wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.  We hope you all enjoy a well deserved rest!

Mrs Thomas, Miss Moran and Mrs Walton

Well done to all the children in our Foundation Stage, you were all amazing.

Thank you for supporting your children this morning 🙂

Class 5 weekly update

Well done everyone on a great week! You worked so hard and produced such amazing work and this is all down to your focus and effort levels in class.

In English last week we were focusing on newspaper reports. We started the topic by recapping the features of a newspaper report and the children did really well to research, using first news, before identifying what they would need to include in their work later that week. They used peer and self-assessment to establish what they had done really well and what their next steps needed to be before putting that into practice during both the planning and writing phase of the week. Their finished work was informative, detailed, well planned and well presented.

In Maths we focused on factors before progressing onto common factors. The children showed really secure understanding of these topics using their prior knowledge to push themselves on later in the week as they progressed through the topics. They have shown tremendous amounts of resilience and mathematical thinking by extending their work to create their own problems for peers, by questioning concepts and ideas as well as thinking deeply and exploring different possibilities within problems. This has resulted in really high standards of work.

This week we are looking at non-chronological reports in English along with prime numbers and square numbers in Maths before breaking up on Friday ready for Christmas.

Mr Sudlow.
