Class 6 Update

English

This week the children looked at photographs of what it was like in the trenches during WWI.  They created some freeze frames to show different points in a soldier’s journey – going off to war, in the trenches and returning from battle.  They used photographs of their freeze frames as a starting point for writing newspaper reports this week.

Maths

The children have been working on decimal numbers this week and what happens when we multiply and divide by 10, 100 or 1000.

History

This week we examined what events led to the start of WWI.  The children worked in groups to present information about what happened to different countries that led to them becoming involved in the war.

Science

In Science this week we looked at blood circulation.  We studied a detailed picture of the heart, and found out the jobs of the veins, arteries and lungs in passing blood around our body and oxygenating it.  Next week, we will look more closely at what happens to blood as it is pumped through our lungs.

Art

The children continued with their Global Canvas art project.  Each group has created a final design of their artwork depicting an endangered species and worked out which materials they will need to construct their project.  Any donations of cardboard by next Monday would be much appreciated.

Weekly News 18.01.19

Sickness absence

If your child has been sick or had diarrhoea, please remember that they must not return to school until 48 hours after their last bout of sickness/diarrhoea. Please note there is no need for your child to be kept off school if they have just complained of a tummy ache and they are feeling ok otherwise.

Social media

We are aware that social media sites  e.g. Facebook are being used to post complaints and derogatory comments about matters concerning either our school or other parents associated with our school.  If you have an issue with anything within school, please do contact the school in the first instance because comments posted on social media can be misunderstood and detrimental to people’s wellbeing.

I am always happy and willing to speak to parents about any concerns and would request that you speak to me if you are unhappy about something regarding school.

Head lice

We have had several reports of head lice in school this week.  Please could you check your child’s hair and treat as necessary.  It would also be helpful if long hair could be tied up/plaited etc and please encourage your child not to take their hair down during the day and keep their hair up. I have been approached by parents who are understandably frustrated at having to repeatedly treat their child’s hair because they come home from school with head lice yet again.  Your support with this would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Class 1 weekly roundup

Phonics: This week the children have continued to focus on segmenting and blending, writing CVC words and short sentences.

We looked at  a new digraph – ‘ay’ – May I play, the children had a go at reading words with the sound in and at spelling them.

ay

Maths:

This week the class have looked at one and two less.  We linked our Maths to our story of the Gingerbread Man.   We used sentences – If Counting Caterpillar eats 2  buttons, there will be 2 less.  2 less than 5 is 3,  etc.  We sang  a Gingerbread Man song – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCZ3dzFK6BI

and played different Gingerbread Men maths games on the laptops, to help with counting and number recognition – https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/gingerbread-man-game

Class 3 weekly update

Hello and welcome back, we hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas and new year!  Thank you for all your kind Christmas gifts and cards from the children.

Class 3 have settled back well into the new term this week and have been starting their new topics in history and science. Our science topic is ‘Uses of everyday materials’ and the children worked in small groups to discuss and share their prior learning about this topic.  Our history topic is yet to be revealed by Miss Moran next week! The children looked at picture clues to help them think about what they might be learning…they had lots of interesting ideas!

Maths – We started a new topic on ‘Money’.  This week we have been looking at counting money in pence and pounds.  Many of the children have a great understanding of using money and this has helped them to work out different totals and solve reasoning and problem style questions.

English – The children started off the week by writing a recount about what they did over the holidays.  Then in Read, write, inc the green group have been reading ‘Elvis’ and the yellow group have been reading ‘Haircuts’.  The rest of the class have been focusing on forming nouns using the suffix ‘-ness’ (e.g. happiness, sadness, tiredness).  They have been using these words in their own sentences, as well as ensuring they add lots of detail and extend their sentences using adjectives and conjunctions.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 18th January 11.01.19

Have a lovely weekend,

Class 2 Weekly Update 11/01/19

A big warm welcome back to you all after what was hopefully a lovely Christmas period for everybody.
The children have come back bright as buttons this week and have effortlessly slipped back into normal routine together for the new term. Apparently there wasn’t any coal or horse manure in their Xmas stockings this year which in my opinion just emphasises what well behaved and studious the children they were last year!
In our English lessons we have moved onto different story books in RWI. Some children have moved onto different stages regarding their story banding. They have been teaching each other very well in partnerships emphasising the right way to say their speed sounds and story words. They have also recalled their essential red story words on sight which has really impressed us. The fluency of their reading is improving and lolly pop sticks have been used very professionally for the direction of what is being read by our ‘budding’ teachers of the future. The children have had very fruitful discussions about what they are focussing on. They have related what they have read to their own experiences, some of which have tickled us, especially anecdotes about bus trips. In addition to RWI we have started our whole class novel study work with our new story book Beegu. The children have listened to the first section of it and have answered simple comprehension questions with their talk buddies. They have acted parts of it out using freeze framing and have made insightful predictions as to what may happen next in the story.
In maths, the children have been chanting and singing counting forwards and backwards in two’s and 10’s. They have consolidated work on place value both comparing amounts, two numbers, ordering up to three groups/numbers whilst using the language smallest to greatest.
In science the children have the new topic of Animals including Humans where we firstly investigated and asked questions of how we have changed since we were babies. We got out of our time machines and looked at photos of teachers as babies and discussed what things looked the same and what had changed. We then did some investigation work involving our bodies, locating the different parts and features, using their scientific names and then learnt what our main senses are and what part of the body drives them.
In RE the children have been talking about how Christians might look after God’s Earth. They devised and described their favourite thing they have seen in their world and made a set of rules which might be followed by others to preserve the Earths’ creation.
All of the children have had a very successful spelling test today. Well done to all, very proud of you! The new list is in their books for next week. Congratulations to Thea who got the classes 1st Star of the week trophy award for persevering with her English work and aiming to improve her sentence word building skills in writing. I wonder who will be going home with the trophy next week?
The children now have a PE session of a Monday and Friday afternoon. Please could you ensure that your child has a kit which includes outdoor trainers in school on those days.
Please come in to see me as usual for a chat if you need to discuss anything to do with your child.
Have a lovely weekend together.

Mr Mavin

Weekly news 11.01.19

The children seem to have settled back into school life well after the Christmas break. Our whole-school theme for this half-term is ‘new beginnings’ and the children offered some wonderful ideas in worship discussions this week. We have started to talk about the idea of ‘unity’ and how this is reflected in our school and children have suggested things which our school community could work on together e.g. looking after school property so that the school is a nice environment in which to learn.

Arthog

If you would like your child to take part in our annual visit to Arthog (Friday 17th to Monday 20th May 2019) please return the reply slip and deposit to the school office on Monday. We need to provide Arthog next week with the numbers attending.

Have a nice weekend.
