FINAL REMINDER: Shropshire Primary Schools’ Half Marathon – Deadline 6th February

We are pleased to announce that Bicton School will be taking part in the Shropshire Primary Schools’ Half Marathon this year.  This is a cumulative Half Marathon (13.1 miles) challenge. Over the course of the Spring term (starting after the February half-term), the children will complete the first 12 miles of the total distance. We intend to run each of these miles on a weekly basis at 8:00am on a Friday morning with Mr Andrews (the one and only) and myself Libby Wynne (parent volunteer with experience in sport and exercise).

The children will then complete their final 1.1 miles at the West Mid Show-ground on Saturday 25th April 2026, starting from 9am (finalised information will be sent in the school newsletter closer to the time). Here, they will experience a full event atmosphere, including race bibs, a fully marshalled route, music, and a start and finish line gantry. As they cross the finish line wearing their Half Marathon T-shirt, they will be presented with their Half Marathon medal.

It is important to explain that this event is not a running race. It will not be chip-timed, nor will there be prizes for the “fastest” children. Instead, it is an inclusive personal challenge where, over a period of time, we hope children will develop a desire to exercise regularly, with no pressure to compete, while achieving something as challenging as completing a Half Marathon — a wonderful achievement for everyone involved.

To take part in this event, there is an entrance fee of £12.60 per child, and you must be able to commit to bringing your child to the event at the West Mid Showground. Please note that your child must be prepared to run once a week in the morning Friday club, so this is a significant commitment. This event is open to all pupils in Year 1 to Year 6. If you would like your child to take part, please make payment via school gateway.

The event deadline is Friday 13th February; however, in order for us to finalise numbers and start our running programme, OUR deadline for entry is FRIDAY 6th FEBRUARY. Unfortunately, we will not be able to accept any late entries after this date, as the required distance will not be completed in time.

We are very much looking forward to being active and completing this challenge together.

Many thanks,

Libby Wynne on behalf of the school
