The missing rabbit!

One of the children in Class 1 lost their toy rabbit so the class decided to go on an adventure around the school to try and find it…

The children camauflaged themselves (with their hoods!) and set off on their journey.   They had lots of fun and encountered some dangers on their way, one involving finding some ‘mystery fur’ behind the shed….could it have been a polar bear following them??

After lots of searching the children found the missing rabbit safe and sound and made their way quickly (and safely) into school so the polar bear didn’t catch them!

Well done Class 1! Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

On Monday morning, Class One went on a frosty walk to the woods.

Please see the photosheet for photos and information about our walk.

On Monday afternoon, we used freezing and melting as a focus for a small experiment/investigation.

Please see the photosheet for photos and information about this.

It was lovely to see children bringing in objects/books/pictures for our topic Show and Tell session this morning. The children enjoyed showing each other their things. Please continue to bring in topic related things for Show and Tell (normally on a Tuesday morning).

Making penguin movements / dances – the children even tried to pass the ‘penguin egg’ to each other without dropping it which proved quite tricky!

In numeracy the children have been looking at numbers and place value.  The Reception children have been ordering numbers up to 10 and practising their number formation.  The Year 1 children have been counting in 10s and finding one more and one less with numbers up to 20.  Some have even looked at numbers past 20.

Thank you

Thank you very much for the lovely gifts that you kindly sent in for us before the Christmas break. We really appreciate them!

Mrs Conde, Mrs Thomas and Miss Bellis

Monday 12th January 2015

Class One have had another busy day today. This morning, we spent time exploring how to use positional language. The children carried out activities involving using language such as next to, behind, above, under. Some children played a game with Miss Bellis where they had to say where they thought the puppet was. At first he was hiding under a box.

After break, we carried out lots of Letters and Sounds activities. Some children were recalling sounds from last week and looking at how to use a phoneme frame correctly. Children in Year 1 were looking at the alternative ‘i’ sound and how the ‘i’ sound differs in words such as ‘kite’ and ‘sink’.

This afternoon we had a great time learning about the Norther Lights, or Aurora Borealis. The children were amazed when they watched a video about the fantastic light shows that can be seen from places such as Lapland.

They watched a video and then thought about which colours they could see in the sky when the northern lights were taking place. The children then looked at landscape silhouettes and then created their own silhouette of trees and mountains using black paper. They then all used coloured chalks to create a scene of Aurora Borealis on black card. The silhouettes were then stuck on top of the card to create the effect of a scene from Lapland. These have been put up already in our role play area to create a backdrop of Aurora Borealis!

Tomorrow we will be looking at the location of the polar regions and finding out a little bit more about the areas by looking at our collection of non-fiction books.

Here are the links to the video watched today and the images of Aurora Borealis. I am sure your children would love to watch them again!

The case of the missing fish!

Today Class 1 discovered an abandoned dinghy on the playground!  All the children were very excited and talked about where it might have come from and shared lots of great ideas.  They also found a letter from the King Penguin asking them to help him and the penguins to find the missing fish…

The children thought they could help the penguins by making some fish and sending them back on the boat so they don’t starve.

Polar clothes

Class 1 have had another busy day and all worked very hard.  This morning we found a suitcase full of clothes in the role play area and talked about what kind of places we would wear these.  We talked about the Arctic and Antarctic to see what they had remembered from yesterday.  The Reception children used collage materials to make a warm outfit and the Year 1 children designed their own outfit adding labels and sentences.

Welcome back Class One!

Class One have settled back into class well and have worked hard together today.

Our new topic for this term is ‘Poles Apart’. We will learn about the Arctic and Antarctic regions and many features of both of these areas. I have attached our medium term planning document for you to see the types of activities the children will be doing this term.

I have also attached a topic poster to give you an overview of additional activities and learning opportunities that will take place this term.

Today the children enjoyed sharing their Christmas holiday news with each other. They produced written work, models, paintings and drawings to show and tell what they had been up to over the festive break.

Letters and Sounds was a busy session – we focused on the ‘ure’ sound found in words such as sure, pure, cure. Some children explored the split ‘o-e’ sound and how it differs to the ‘oe’ sound. For example, in words such as awoke, alone, explode.

The children spent some time this afternoon looking at informative powerpoints about the Arctic and the Antarctic regions. I have attached the files so that you can look at these with your children. They are a brief introduction to our new topic.

The children worked in pairs to decide upon four topic related things they would like to find out about over the next few weeks. Some of these include arctic animals, such as foxes and hares. They also want to find out about how people live in the polar regions and polar expeditions.
