Year 6 Booster change of day

Next week neither Mr Davies or myself are able to do Booster on Thursday 6th but Mr Davies can do Booster on Tuesday 4th at the usual times from 3:15 to 4:30. Children can go into Film Club once Booster is finished if they wish to.

Many thanks.

Class 5 Geography Homework for Wednesday 29th

This week we are learning about the natural resources of Brazil, as well as the products it grows or manufactures. We have started to think about where these might be exported to and Tuesday night’s homework is to look around your own home to see which products of the rainforest are lurking in your cupboards!

I will be sending the survey sheet home (see below) on Tuesday night but if you are reading this now you have a headstart!

Class 5 Literacy homework for 27.01.14

This weekend, Class 5 children have been asked to continue planning their stories on deforestation which we are going to start writing on Monday 27th.  They were given time on Friday afternoon to make a start on their plan, making use of the range of topic books in School to remind them about the cause and effect of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.

I have uploaded the planning sheet below so that they can type their ideas if they wish and they are free to edit the planning sheet as they choose.  If children are unable to print at home, they can bring their work in on a memory stick or email their work to the Office at admin@bicton.shropshire.sch.uk and we will print the document for them.

I’m really looking forward to reading children’s stories next week!

Photoclub – new talent & winter portraits!

We made a good start to Photoclub last week with Christian and Joe and this week Evie and Aaron joined us and we had a go in the challenging winter light at some outdoor portraits.  Everyone had a go at framing some clutter free backgrounds and also posing for their partner – don’t they all look lovely!

Class 5 News week ending 17th January

Literacy

Our writing activities this week have all been linked to our new text The Vanishing Rainforest.  We have looked at how and why the characters’ emotions changed at different points in the text, rewritten the text in role as various characters and written book reviews using examples from the text to explain our views.

Numeracy

In Maths, we have focused on converting fractions to percentages and learnt how to find any percentage using our knowledge of how to find 10% of a number.

Other activities included: learning about the different countries of South America, their capital cities and geographical features of the continent; a practical exploratory task examining different rocks to decide how to find the hardest rock in a given sample and creating group compositions of Brazil/rainforest-inspired music.

Please could I remind children to have their P.E. kit in School for Tuesday and Thursday and to make sure that their jogging bottoms do not trail over their heels, as we are using the apparatus this term.

Thank you as always for your support.

Year 6 Booster

Well done to all the Year 6 children in Booster Club tonight. This is the first time ever that we have had every Year 6 attending and it will hopefully continue.

I asked all the children if there was anything specific that they would like to revisit over the forthcoming weeks and we agreed on a list of areas to focus on.  Every child worked really hard and, although I reassured them that not everyone has the same understanding and pace, please let me know if your child mentions finding something difficult.  I will not be introducing any new areas of maths or literacy but we will, however, be focusing on test techniques and looking at past papers, some of which may be new to them.

Thank you again for encouraging your child to attend and for your support.

Quick Sticks Hockey

Well done to the Year 5 and 6 children who took part in the Quick Sticks hockey event at The Corbet School this morning.  Although they did not win the tournament, they beat the overall winners which they were extremely proud of and enjoyed playing with wooden sticks for the first time!

Thank you to the parents who accompanied the team and cheered them on so enthusiastically.
