Spaghetti Maths News

Jonny really enjoyed his first Spaghetti Maths session at Bicton on Monday and had the following to say:
Dear Parents
We had a really good first class this evening, lots of enthusiastic children eager to participate and learn.
Today we did a class called MAKE THE CUT.  At the start of the class the children were challenged to cut a hole in a piece of A4 paper which they could fit through.  They all had a good attempt at this and cut the biggest hole out of the centre on the sheet – some of the smaller children could actually get through it!
They were then challenged to cut a hole that an adult could get through – bit more tricky – given the dimensions of A4 paper.
The children realised it was impossible to do this by cutting out the middle and wasting 99% of the material so a different solution and pattern of cut was required.
We then discussed possible ways to cut the sheet to use more of it and the children were given a template to follow, they all did this in class and almost all of them took this home.
Some of the children then attempted to make the biggest hole possible, with several children cutting holes so big several people could fit inside!
Rosa managed 24 children inside hers – a new Spaghetti Maths record – well done Rosa!
Looking forward to seeing them all again after the half term break for more mind expanding maths! You can of course follow us on social media (Twitter and Facebook.)
If you have anything you want to ask about the course please feel free to let me know.
Kind regards
Jonny

Class 4 Science

Class 4 have been learning about the human digestive system in their science lessons this term.  As part of this, they planned and carried out an investigation to find out how different drinks can affect our teeth.

They used hard boiled eggs to represent our teeth and put each of them in a different liquid for a week.  The liquids included milk, water, coke, squash and vinegar.  Today the class opened the jars containing the eggs and liquids to see the results.  There were a few surprises including eggs which had gone soft and some which had changed colour!

As an extension activity to complete if they wish, children can then complete section A, B or C on the sheet about timetables.

Both sheets are attached below:

Class 4 Homework

This week we would like the children to complete a postcard from somewhere they have visited recently.

We would like the children who went on the residential to write a postcard from Condover.

Children need to draw and colour a picture on the front and then write the postcard to someone they know on the back.

Please ask if you require any further explanation.
