Handwriting outside

On Wednesday we had lots of fun out on the playground for our handwriting lesson. The children had chunky chalks to practise their letter formation and joins.

Class 2 Weekly Update

English: This week we have been thinking about adding suffixes ‘s’ and ‘es’ to the end of words to change things from singular to plural and adding the prefix ‘un’ to change the meaning of adjectives e.g. kind to unkind. Thursday and Friday we focused on ‘Not Now, Bernard’. The children  have written great book reviews about our class story and thought about who they would recommend the story to and also had time to write questions to the monster in the story, asking things they’d like to find out e.g. why did he make a mess in class 2? Why did he eat Bernard? Etc.

Maths:  We have been looking at measurement – money this week. We have been learning to recognise coins and identify the differences between each coin, e.g. some are round, bronze, silver, big, small, etc. The children have been problem solving and reasoning e.g. Laura thinks she has 17p in her purse. Is she correct? Explain how you know.

Science: The children really enjoyed planting their beans on Tuesday and then confidently wrote a set of instructions on how to plant a bean.

History: The children were looking at seaside photographs in their book and completed the senses grid with how the photograph makes them feel. They thought about what they would see, hear, smell, taste and touch if they were there.

PE: We have continued to practise our athletic skills, ready for Sports Day in a few weeks.

Phonics Screening: The children have all completed their screening test this week and should all be really proud of themselves for working so hard! The children’s results will be in their reports at the end of the year as we do not find out the pass mark for a few weeks. Thank you for all of your support with reading and revising at home.

Well done Class 2!

Spellings: To be tested Friday 22nd June 2018.

Science – Planting Beans

Yesterday we started our ‘Plants’ topic in Science. The children enjoyed planting beans and then writing a set of instructions, explaining how to plant beans.

Class 2 Weekly Update

English: This week we have started our new book, ‘Not Now, Bernard!’ The children have acted out the story and today have written character descriptions. Some children thought of adjectives to describe each character and made a mind map of their ideas, some have written sentences about their chosen character and some children have used sub-headings to sort their descriptions e.g. what they look like, their personality and behaviour.

Maths: The children have been introduced to position and direction this week. We have discussed lots of vocabulary to describe turns e.g. quarter turn, half turn, three quarter turn and whole turn. We have been describing where objects are using the vocabulary, above, below, in the middle, left, right, up and down.

Science: We have thought about Carnivores, Herbivores and Omnivores this week in Science and learned about the different animals that fall into each category.

PE: We have been practising hard for Sports Day in PE. We have been practising running races, egg and spoon race, bean bag race and the sack race.

Handwriting: We do a lot of handwriting practise in Class 2 and most children have now become confident in using leaders and descenders in their everyday writing. Some children are now joining their writing!

Spellings: To be tested Friday 15th June 2018.

Spellings 8.6.18

Phonics Screening: Year 1 children will be doing their phonics screening next week. Please encourage your children to practise their sounding out and blending in preparation for this and any reading during the weekend would be greatly appreciated!

Have a good weekend!

A surprise visitor in Class 2!

This morning the children came back from Worship and found our classroom in such a mess! After a lot of detective work and thinking it might have been a crocodile, dragon or an owl, the children decided it must have been the monster from our new class story, ‘Not Now, Bernard!’ We then listened to the story and acted it out in small groups.

Class 2 Weekly Update

English: Red and Blue group have completed RWI activities. Green and Yellow group have been focusing on adding suffixes ‘ed’,’er’ and ‘ing’ to words. Yesterday the children had time to independently write about our trip to the Ice Cream Farm.

Maths: We have continued with place value this week, looking at how many tens and ones are in a two-digit number and using the more than, less than and equal too symbols to compare numbers.

Science: We have been describing a range of animals in Science this week and comparing them to each other and ourselves.

History: The children found out about steam trains in History and how these helped to make seaside holidays more popular in the past.

Homework: The children have been given two pieces of homework to complete over the holidays. Maths homework is placing numbers on a number line and identifying one more and one less than a given number. English is a story starter, “We were walking in the woods, when we heard a…” I’ve asked the children to write an exciting story to go with this starter, remembering to use punctuation, adjectives, conjunctions (and, but and because) and to remember to use their beautiful handwriting. If your child would like to write more than the given lines, then additional paper can be added to their homework. Homework is due in Friday 8th June 2018.

Writing about our school trip

I am so impressed with Class 2 today! The children were challenged to write independently about our class trip to the Ice Cream Farm and they have written some brilliant recounts! I was so proud of them, I asked Mrs Johnson to come and see their work and she gave the class a certificate.

Well done Class 2, keep up the hard work!

Last Forest School Session

We had a lovely last Forest School session yesterday. The children had fun collecting sticks for our fire and then enjoyed hot chocolates and marshmallow s’mores.

Yellow group and Green group have continued with Read Write Inc. In yesterday’s lesson, the children were writing Acrostic poems about Owls, linking to our story Owl Babies.

The children had a brilliant last day with Miss Melville and Miss Neal. They have written invitations to Pre-school, inviting them to our afternoon Royal Wedding party, decorated cakes and enjoyed food, drinks and a dance this afternoon! Miss Neal and Miss Melville have completed their placement at Bicton and I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing them the best of luck in their final year of university!
