This afternoon, we looked at the life cycle of an orange, starting out as a tiny seed planted in the ground, growing into a seedling, into a tree – the tree blossoming in spring and some of the flowers grow into fruit. The children found it interesting oranges change from green to orange when they’re ready to be picked in autumn. We talked about how the tree needs sunlight and water to grow.

The children explored the skin of an orange – it felt soft and smooth and looked shiny. One of the children noticed tiny pores. They also felt some dried orange skin – it was hard.

After, the children enjoyed painting the dried orange skin, Miss Merricks made them into toadstools 🍄.

Shape faces have been made by the children. We used basic shapes; circles, squares, rectangles and introduced semi circles. The children used the shapes appropriately for the task and created some fabulous faces.

At snack time, last week, the children got to taste their crumble…

Last week, the children had a lovely morning making apple crumble with the apples they picked earlier in the week. We talked about hygiene – the importance of hand washing, wearing our aprons etc. The children measured the ingredients, they used good coordination and steadiness to add the flour, sugar and butter.

The recipe incorporated knife skills using a back and forth motion. Well done all 😊

Autumn#1 2025 All about me Nursery Rhymes

This morning, the children enjoyed picking apples and pears from our school garden and brought them back to nursery. The children looked closely at the fruit to check no bugs or insects had nibbled them. We will wash, cut and prepare them ready to make something special.

Today was extremely hot so Acorns enjoyed lots of water play. There were lots of opportunities for pouring, scooping, and splashing to help develop fine and gross motor skills.

The water wall was in operation creating a cascading water system. The children poured water into the top and saw it flowing down, exploring angles and pathways.

There was a doll washing station so children could enjoy washing the dolls using sponges, and soap encouraging imaginative play.

The water was a great way to help the children to cool down and regulate their body temperatures.

Yesterday we visited a local artist who is painting a mural in our school hall, Rory McCann. He does lots of work in schools and aims to provide educational value. The transformation and development of his mural, each day has been incredible.
The children showed excellent listening skills – giving their full attention and asked lots of interesting but also relevant questions, which really impressed the adults.

The children had fun making and testing paper aeroplanes this afternoon – they were quite successful ✈️

Before half term, Nursery 2 listened to a story Trains, Trains, Trains then played a maths game. They rolled the dice, and placed the corresponding number of trains / carriages on the track – we had short trains, long trains, night trains, light trains, new trains, old trains – anything you like trains! 😉🤣
The children were curious as the book had an illustration of a Level Crossing, so in the moment we watched a video about what happens at a Level Crossing 🚘 🛑 🚆 They were excited to see the train whizz past.
