On Monday, we were lucky enough to receive a visit from the High Sheriff of Shropshire, Jane Trowbridge. She is visiting schools across Shropshire to raise awareness of Youth Awareness Day, which Bicton will be taking part in on Thursday 16th October.
Our Courageous Advocacy pupil council had chance to interview the High Sheriff:
How did you become High Sheriff of Shropshire?
I was asked to become High Sheriff 5 years ago. It’s very tricky because you have to keep it a secret for 4 years! Somebody in Shropshire recommended me to the King so I am the King’s representative in Shropshire.
What are some of your main jobs as High Sheriff?
My main job is to go around Shropshire and tell the King what is going on here. I have to make sure the police are doing their job, the fire officers are doing their job etc and let the King know if there’s anything that needs to be changed.
What kind of problems do young people in Shropshire face?
Some children in Shropshire don’t have enough food to eat. I spoke to one school who found children hiding food from lunchtime in their pockets so that they had something to eat later. In some places in Shropshire, there aren’t a lot of things to do and places can be difficult to get to without buses and trains. There are also people who get caught up in bad situations and get bullied or have parents that are not very kind to them.
Is there anything that Bicton can do to help?
You can talk about it to other people! Young people need to speak up about getting things improved and get involved in the campaign. You can help raise money which can go towards solving some of the problems we have talked about and the best thing is, the young people decide exactly where the money should be spent!
