Class 2 Weekly Update 22/03/2019

Class 2 have all set a perfect example of how to behave in school and have been using their manners at every opportunity. In class they have enjoyed lots of practical learning experiences and have really enjoyed each other’s company as usual.
In Read Write Inc the children have been reading both fiction and non-fiction in their groups. They have enjoyed sharing their own knowledge and experiences of the wider world into their discussions too related to the texts they have read.
In Maths the children were introduced to further work on length and height through a new picture and information book, ‘Actual Size’ by Steve Jenkins. Here they continued using non-standard methods for measurement at the start of the week by measuring pictures within the book which were life size animal parts which they all found very engaging and very real. Firstly they began to estimate and measure the animal body parts with objects, and then slowly progressed into to using standard cm’s using rulers by the end of the week. We have also worked on creating our class Ostrich for a class height chart. After the children chose the Ostrich as their favourite, we read about the big bird’s height in the book and then measured and drew it for us to compare our own heights and sizes to it on our wall. This is work in progress and should be ready next week.
In History the children have been learning about famous Victorian inventions and inventors as an extension to their wonderful homework projects. Their main learning focus was on the key inventor Alexander Graham Bell who invented the first ever telephone. The children then had a go at making one of their own to try out too with their partners which was amusing to watch when it was time to test them out. Our Victorian tiles are near completion too and wouldn’t look out of place around any Victorian fireplace.
In Science the children have kick started their new topic of Everyday Materials by doing a practical investigation involving sorting materials into different categories as a group and have learned new vocabulary in order to better describe their properties.
The new spelling lists have gone out in books as usual to be done next Friday by the children. It has been so lovely to see the enthusiasm of the children concerning both spellings and their home reading materials. We are so grateful to you all for nurturing their joy for learning in the home too.
I hope that you have a lovely weekend together and I look forward to seeing you on Monday.

Class 5 weekly update

Well done class 5 on a great week!

In Maths we have been focusing on using the grid and column methods to multiply three and four digit numbers by two digit numbers. The children have really worked hard to master both processes and have shown fantastic flexibility with their calculating, presentation and reasoning skills. Next week our focus will switch to division.

In English we have been working on how to describe a scene. The children used evidence from our class novel as well as non-fiction books from the library and their own research to plan out what they were going to include in their description of the front line. We explored how we could use the five senses as a way of describing the trenches and what it would have been like for soldiers during World War One. The children have used an expansive amount of vocabulary to make their work extremely interesting to read as well as creating a flow throughout their writing. Next week we will be re-writing a dream scenario using the events of our class novel as inspiration.

Coach Neil will be in next Monday afternoon so PE kit with trainers would be great.

Have a fantastic weekend,

Mr Sudlow.

Class 6 update

English

The children finished writing their atmospheric descriptions of Mill House from the story ‘Ghost Soldier.’  They then made predictions about how they think the story will end and have begun writing their own final chapters of the story.

Maths

We completed our work on algebra by looking at word problems and problems with various possibilities of answers.

History

The children have begun to research how WW1 ended and how Europe changed following the end of the war.

Class 3 weekly update

English – The children have been working independently to write a story based on the Great fire of London.  They used their plans from last week to write to ensure they included all their ideas.  They wrote some great stories, well done Class 3!

In Read, Write, Inc blue group have been reading ‘So cool!’ and writing about a cool day.  They discussed lots of ideas about their favourite days out including the beach, shopping, jump in and climbing wall.  The red group have been reading ‘Barker’ and writing a newspaper report about Barker the dog, showing how Mr Black’s feelings towards him change in the story.  The rest of the class have been working independently to improve their sentence work by using a range a sentence openers.  They played a game to use as many different types of starters then used this to help them write a short story.

Maths – This week we have been making equal groups by sharing and grouping, then dividing by 2.  The children have been using practical equipment to make groups and share out the objects equally and checking each group has the same amount.  They have also been writing division and multiplication number sentences to explain what their groups/drawings show.

Science – We have been doing some investigation work this week which the children enjoyed getting involved in.  They worked in groups to test how absorbent different types of paper were.  They discussed how they need to ensure they carry out a fair test and what factors they were changing.  Once they tested the different papers they recorded and discussed the results and explained why some were more absorbent than others.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 29th March.  22.03.19.

Sentences to be written in their spellings book please.

Have a lovely weekend.
