Old Christmas Cards

As part of our RE topic this half term, we are looking at how artists have portrayed The Christmas Story. If you have any old christmas cards, particularly ones with an image relating to The Christmas Story, I would be very grateful if they could be given to Class 4 to help us with our RE topic.

Class 5 News 14.11.14

Numeracy

At the start of the week we used the knowledge that 30cm is (approximately) 12″ to find other equivalencies. Children quickly got the hang of this and could convert any metric lengths I gave them to inches/feet and inches. They then practised converting from metric to imperial by measuring their heights in centimetres then converting to feet and inches before checking their answers against a conversion graph created by one group.

For most of the week we have focused on time and have used real-life problems to practise finding time intervals and reading 24-hour clock times on train timetables.

Children have been given maths homework linked to finding time intervals which is due in for Monday. Their task will reinforce what they have already covered in class but , if they need adult help to complete it, please can you make a note of this on their homework for me and I will look through it with them next week.

History

We have focused on Life in the Trenches this week and children were set an independent research task to learn about an aspect of trench life which they are interested in. Their chosen topics included illnesses, first aid, food supplies and how and why the trenches were built.

Literacy/R.E./PSHE

This week children have written in different areas of the curriculum. After watching a live assembly from The Tower of London on Monday afternoon, they used this experience to help them write about their feelings and emotions on the afternoon of Remembrance Day. Some of their comments were quite breathtaking and showed maturity far beyond their years. Today I gave them the starting line, “If I could be…(a person of their choice) for a day, I would…” As well as writing in role as the hero they had dressed up as today, several children also chose to take on less-obvious roles and explained how they would strive for world peace, an end to hunger and cures for all diseases. Again, many of their comments were incredible and showed selflessness and a real desire to help others.

Weekly News 14.11.14

Children In Need

Thank you for your support with our fundraising efforts today for Children In Need. The children (and staff!) looked fantastic and we are so grateful for the efforts put into the various outfits/costumes. We raised over £200 from the donations for non-uniform, the cake sale and the sale of Pudsey ears! This is an amazing effort and we will confirm the actual total on Monday.

Collecting Children from Clubs

Please could we ask that children are collected from the Hall on Mondays after Dance Club and not from the playground. We have reminded children that they are not to go back to their classrooms but to wait for parents/grandparents etc to collect them from the Hall.

Punctuality

We have seen an increase in the number of children arriving late in the morning. Please could you ensure that your child is at School for 8:55 when the bell goes as the School’s punctuality figures are monitored closely by the Local Authority as well as children’s attendance. Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Classes 4 and 5 Carol Service

This year we have decided to hold a Carol Service where children in Classes 4 and 5 will perform in Bicton Church on Thursday 18th December at 6:30 pm. Miss Barratt has started to rehearse with both classes this week and we would be grateful for your support to help your child learn the carols and any readings they are given (to follow in the next couple of weeks.)

Buttons needed

If you have any old buttons, please could you leave them at the Office for a project that Class 3 are doing. Thank you.

Home link book reminder

Please could you ensure that any messages regarding clubs/picking up time are written in your child’s home link book each day. It is important for us to know if another person is picking your child up at home time and whether your child is attending clubs. If you child is to regulalrly attend a certain club every week, please could you write this in the home link book so that we can update our records. If there are any changes to arrangements, then please also let us know in the home link book.

A little bit of Nativity news!

This afternoon, some children in Class One have received a line or two to learn for the Christmas Nativity play. Please could you support your child in learning these lines at home. They will also have time to learn their line(s) in school time too.

We are hoping to send out the costume letters for all children at beginning of next week.

Please don’t hesitate to come and ask if there is anything you are unsure of.

Christmas Play

The children have been given their lines today, to learn for the Christmas play. All the children are excited about this and very eager to learn them.

Please could you support your child with learning these at home, five/ten minutes a night would be great!

Weekly news 10th November 2014

Bonfire

Thank you to everyone who attended the bonfire on Friday evening. I’m sure you’ll agree it was a great evening and the children seemed to really enjoy themselves. Thankfully the weather stayed mild and fairly dry! Thank you to FOBs and parents who helped organise the evening and made it such a success.

KS1 Football

Jack will be running Football Club on Tuesdays for the next 2 weeks for Reception, Years 1 and 2 after which we will decide if it is still light enough to continue. KS2 Football Club will also continue on Wednesdays after school whilst we are able to do so.

Parking

Please could we ask that people do not park in the disabled parking spaces or the bus lanes. Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Music Tuition Fees

Please can any outstanding music fees for the first half of the autumn term be paid as soon as possible.

Uniform

Thank you for your support this term in ensuring that children are wearing the correct uniform for school. If girls choose to wear headbands, slides, etc. please could these be appropriate for school, as we have noticed some quite elaborate hairbands being worn in the past week.

Children In Need – Dressing Up and Cake Sale

Just a reminder that next Friday, 14th November, is Children In Need day. This year’s theme is ‘Be A Hero’ and children can come to school on Friday dressed up as any hero of their choice for a small donation of 50p per child. It does not have to be a well-known ‘hero’ and children have already shared lots of ideas for what they would like to dress up as; if you have any queries at all, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of staff. To help boost our fundraising efforts for the charity, we will also be holding a cake sale and any donations of cakes or biscuits would be gratefully received. We still have Pudsey ears for sale at the Office for only £2.50.
