NSPCC Sponsored Event

Children listened fantastically in the NSPCC assemblies on Monday morning and may have already mentioned the “Buddy’s Big Workout” sponsored event to you.  We will be running the sponsored activities in school the first week back after half term; these will involve children taking part in fun physical activities, such as obstacle courses, in their P.E lessons.

Children will be bringing home a letter and an activity booklet/sponsor form on Tuesday.  If you have any questions about the event, please do not hesitate to speak to me.

Many thanks.

Class One – Gardens and outdoor area.

As you may have noticed, we have been busy ‘sprucing up’ the outdoor area outside Class One.

Our flower bed areas have received a lot of attention recently. Mrs Orrell has been very involved in helping Class One decide upon what to plant in the flower beds and provided Class One with a list of suitable shrubs and plants for the first flower bed, nearest the main class gate. Class One spent time looking at pictures and finding out about a variety of shrubs and plants and decided that ‘colour’ was important, to add vibrancy to the flower bed. We decided that we liked ‘Ceanothus Blue Mound’ and ‘Camellia Japonica’. These, along with several other varieties of shrubs and plants have been planted by children in Class One and Mrs Orrell, for us to enjoy and look after.

Here is a plan of the ‘Class One Shrubbery’:

The bed furthest away from Class One is our vegetable and herb garden. Here you will see that a range of vegetables and herbs have been planted and some have also flowered again from last year. Here is a plan of our Vegetable and Herb Garden:

These plans will be displayed above the beds so that children can try to identify the plants, herbs, flowers, vegetables and shrubs.

A big thank you to Mrs Orrell, FoBs, parents and staff for helping to supply equipment for and develop the area outside Class One. Also, a big well done to Class One children who have worked hard to weed, prepare and plant the flower beds. We have lots of work ahead to make sure everything is well cared for.

We are grateful for the donations that have been coming in to help us develop other areas such as the mud kitchen and water area. Please keep bringing in any equipment that you think may be useful.

Mrs Conde and Mrs Thomas.

Year 5 Presentations

Today the Year 5s presented their work to the rest of Class 5.  We have been very impressed with how hard the year 5 children have worked this week.  They have worked in groups to research volcanoes and could present it in any way they liked.  We were all very entertained by what they showed us!IMG_1059[1] IMG_1077[1] IMG_1092[1] IMG_1102[1] IMG_1105[1] IMG_1112[1]

Class 2 cookery club

The children got very messy today making jam tarts, we even had a little play with the left over dough and made lots of pretty shapes and patterns. Thank you for clearing up so well!

All the other children are busy creating their crafty dolls.  We are looking forward to seeing the finished products very soon!

In the woods

This morning Class 1 went to the woods….they listened to the story of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and then worked in pairs to freeze frame one of the scenes from the story.  Some even managed to have a go at doing more freeze frames.  They were asked to think carefully about their body language and facial expressions to get in the role of the characters – there were some very convincing faces!

It has been busy in Class One!

Hi

I have uploaded a photo sheet of our Teddy Bear’s Picnic – you can find the link below. Once again, thank you for your support in making sure the children had lots of yummy food to enjoy together.

Today, we have had a very busy day so far in Class One. We started the morning with a reading session. We are trying to work our way through the children to ensure that they have a ‘choice book’ to enjoy in addition to their scheme book. Please could you send in any school books that your child has had at home so that they can go back into our reading room.

The Reception children spent a little time in our outdoor area this morning. The Year 1 children have practised their mental arithmetic with me.

We had Letters and Sounds before break today too. The Year 1 children were exploring the alternative /air/ sound – ‘ere’ , as in where and there. The Reception children were having a look at the ‘i – e’ sound, as in bike, kite, prize and hide.

After break, we had a Mathematics session. Some children were finding out about ‘teen’ numbers and how these are made up by adding more to 10. We used bead strings, multilink and number tracks to demonstrate this. Some children worked with Miss Bellis to revise counting steps of 2. This involved finding out about pairs and looking at how things can be counted in two’s, such as shoes.

(I have just realised that I have dated these as tomorrow! These are from today, 11th May 2015).

Visit to Bicton Church

As part of our RE topic this term Class 1 have been looking at special places around them.  Today we went to a special place in our local community – Bicton Church.  The children first of all looked at all the parts of the church and found out what they are used for – e.g. font, altar, lectern, pulpit, pews….  Then they spent some time exploring the church and sketching some of the parts of the church we discussed.

Cross Country

Cross Country took place but with a difference this week.  Instead of getting too wet running around the village, Mrs Barker did a fun Zumba session in the Hall!

We will always do our best to get the children out and about on Fridays after school so it would be helpful if children could have a waterproof in their bag just in case of wet weather.

Cancellation of Clubs

If clubs ever need to be cancelled because of the weather, we will always phone to let you know to save you having to contact school.

SATs Week

Year 6 SATs start next Monday and the children have worked really hard this week to make sure that they are as prepared as they possibly can be.  I’ve reminded them to have an early night on Sunday and a good breakfast! We wish them good luck and are sure they will all do their best.

Year 2s will also be doing their SATs next week, as Miss Moran discussed at Parents Evening.

Letters

Please could any remaining Class 5 swimming letters and Arthog medical forms be returned as soon as possible.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Johnson
