Phonics this week

Last week the children looked at the sounds for ‘m’ ‘a’  ‘s’   ‘d’ .  This week we have continued to look at these sounds and have also looked at ‘t’ and ‘i’ so far this week.   When forming ‘t’ we say ‘down the tower, across the tower’ and for ‘i’ we say ‘down the body and dot for the head.’

I have attached powerpoint copy of all the letters and sounds that we will be covering over the next few weeks.

We are also practising writing our names everyday.

2 d Maths fun

Each group has been busy doing different 2d maths activities today.  Some children went on a shape walk, some children used shapes to collage a scarecrow and the rest played shape games.  Over the next few days all the children will get an opportunity to do all 3 activities.

To support your child ask them to find different shapes in the home and when you are out and about.

Phonics and letter formations

The children have looked at 2 new letters and their sounds this week – ‘s’ and ‘d’ .    When forming the letter ‘s’ we say ‘Slither down the snake.’ and for ‘d’ we say ‘around the dinosaurs bottom, up his tall neck and down to his feet.’

Today the children used chalks, play doh and whiteboard pens to form all the letters we have done this week.

Weekly News 16.09.16

Head Lice

We are aware that there are head lice in school so please can you check your child’s hair and treat as required.  If you are unsure of the recommended methods/treatments, please speak to myself or Mrs Jones/Mrs Neal at the school office.

Breakfast Club and 8:30 Club

The 8:30 Club has been well attended this week and it seems to be easing the parking in the morning as we hoped.  Just a reminder though that children should not be dropped off before 8:30.  If you wish to drop your child before this time they will need to pay £1.50 for Breakfast Club.  Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Residential Visits

We have had a great response to the Year 5/6 visit to Arthog – please speak to the school office if the letter did not make it home with your child yesterday!  We are also in the process of trying to book a residential visit for Year 3/4 and will send a letter out hopefully over the next couple of weeks.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Johnson

Class 2 Weekly Update

The children have worked really hard this week and should feel very proud of themselves.

Maths – We have continued to identify and represent numbers in maths this week.

Year 1 – The children have been counting forwards and backwards from given numbers within 20. We have also had a go at painting our numbers really neatly to help with forming numbers properly and the correct way around. I have set the children some counting homework to complete and return by Friday 23rd September. Please encourage your children to complete this independently, if you wish to support your child, a little note at the bottom would be really helpful to suggest what they may have found difficult.

Year 2 – We have recapped on estimating this week, the children would look at a group of objects and make a sensible guess as to how many objects were in the tray. Year 2 have identified the tens and ones in two-digit numbers, using base 10 equipment and pictures. Finally we have been comparing numbers using mathematical language, greater than, less than and equal to. The children have been given a worksheet to complete and return by Friday 23rd September, they are expected to write the greater than (>), less than (<) and equal to (=) signs to make the number sentences correct.

English – After looking at the story ‘Who’s that’ – Arctic Animals, we have developed our writing skills to produce our own version of the story. We have discussed nouns this week and why it is important to use capital letters and have developed the use of adjectives to describe nouns. Thursday’s and Friday’s lessons were spent making our own book called ‘Who’s that’; the children have written and illustrated their stories beautifully.

Phonics

Year 1 – have focused on the ‘j’ phoneme this week.

Year 2 – have learned the ‘dge’ spelling at the end of a word.

Spellings – We have completed our first spelling test this week and they have all done a fantastic job! Thank you for supporting the children throughout the week with their practises. They have been given their new spellings to be tested Friday 23rd.

Reading – Over the next couple of weeks I will be listening to individual children read. Therefore some children may move between bands until we are sure of their decoding and comprehension skills as well as their reading fluency. When you read with your child, it is helpful if you can ask them questions about the text as well as support them in decoding difficult words/sounds.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate in coming to see me.

Have a brilliant weekend 🙂

Miss Edwards

Class 3 Weekly Update

We’ve had another great week in Class 3 this week.

English: This week we have begun our study of Roald Dahl. The children have really enjoyed finding out about Roald Dahl and his biography. We have listened to the story of The Enormous Crocodile and had lots of fun retelling it ourselves in an entertaining way, making sure we used lots of expression. We have begun to read ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ (only Chapter 1 so far) and have been thinking about how to describe the characters of George and Grandma. The children have been focusing on using information they know from the story to help them make assumptions and predictions about the characters likes/dislikes, thoughts, feelings and motives. This is something we will continue to look at next week.

Maths: We have been continuing our work on place value, particularly identifying what a number is made up of and using this to help us solve problems. The children have used their understanding to help them subtract sums that previously they may have found tricky – e.g. 345 – 40 = the children know just to focus on the 10s column and the answer will become 305. We have compared numbers using the < > = symbols and have been building numbers using equipment and pictures.

Science: We have done some revision this week on forces. The children have demonstrated that they can remember previous teaching about pushes and pulls and are therefore ready to move on next week.

Topic: The children have worked independently to use a map to find the names and location of cities within the UK.

Spelling: We have been learning about words ending in ‘le’ and we will continue this next week.

Well done Class 3 for all your hard work – keep it up!

Have a lovely weekend. 🙂

Spellings to be tested on Friday 23rd September

Dear Parents / Carers,

Below is the spelling lists for this week.  They should also be glued inside the children’s yellow spelling books.  These books need to be in school each Friday for the spelling test and for new spellings to be stuck in please.  Groups are subject to change as I work out which groups everyone should be in, but do feel free to let me know if you feel after a couple of weeks that the spellings for your child seem too easy or too difficult.

Many thanks,

Mrs S Foster

Open the Book 15.09.16

On Thursday, Revd. Mary-Lou Toop and the Open the Book volunteers visited school for their first assembly of the year. We listened to the story of Jesus in the Temple and some of our new Reception children did a fantastic job in role as the crowd in the temple.
