Class 3 Weekly Update

English: We have been focusing on grammar this week and have been revising the different types of sentences – exclamations, commands, statements and questions and we have learned about place prepositions. Next week we will be moving on to learn about time and cause prepositions.

Maths: We have gone over some of the subtraction methods we have learned this term and then towards the end of the week we have learned about doubling and halving two digit numbers.

We will be focusing on multiplication and division for the next few weeks so any help you can give your child to learn their times tables is very much appreciated.

Year 3 children are expected to know the 2, 5, 10, 3, 4, and 8 times tables by the end of year 3 (2, 5 and 10 were taught in Year 2).

Year 4 children are expected to know all the times tables up to the 12 times tables by the end of Year 4.

Science: We did a practical investigation this week where the children were investigating how magnets attract and repel each other.

PSHE: The children have been thinking about what they love about Bicton School and what makes it a good school.

We have been working hard this week on the songs for Joseph and have started to put the production together. Children can find all the Joseph songs on youtube and the words are in a previous post on the website if they wish to practise.

Class 2 weekly update

This week in…

English.

The children have been working on their grammar to improve independent writing.

Year 1 – have been joining words and clauses using ‘and’, putting sentences into the correct sequence and learning how to use a capital letter for the personal pronoun ‘I’.

Year 2 – have been recapping on expanded noun phrases, using the suffix ‘ly’ to change adjectives into adverbs and learning how to use subordinating conjunctions ‘when’, ‘if’, ‘that’ and ‘because’.

Maths.

We have continued to look at shapes but this week we moved onto 3D shapes from 2D.

Year 1 – have learned how to recognise and name common 3D shapes (cubes, cuboids, spheres, cylinders and cones).

Year 2 – have been naming 3D shapes in everyday objects, sorting the shapes into given groups e.g. shapes with/without curved faces and identifying 3D shape properties (edges, faces and vertices).

Phonics.

Year 1 – phase 3 ‘ure’ and ‘er’ phoneme and phase 5 ‘ay’ phoneme.

Year 2 – adding ‘ing’ and ‘ed’ to root words.

Science.

This week we were recognising and drawing food chains in a range of different habitats.

Nativity.

The children have enjoyed learning the songs for the Nativity this week, next week we will start rehearsals in the hall. Please could I remind parents to practise children’s lines a few minutes a night in preparation for our rehearsals. A costume letter will be given out at the beginning of next week.

Phonics

Over the next few weeks the children in Class 1 will be consolidating the letter sounds we have covered so far.

We will be continuing to practise letter formations, reading words containing the sounds – segmenting and blending.  Some children have put the words into sentences and had a go at writing out simple sentences with these words in.  This week we have concentrated on m a s d  t  and the words mad, sad, dad, mat, sat, at, Sam.

The children will be revising the words contained in the Powerpoint below.

Tag Rugby

Well done to the Year 6s who took part in the tag rugby tournament earlier this week.  They finished 3rd out of the 7 schools taking part and there was some pretty nifty footwork on show by all accounts!

Maths – measure

The children in Class 1 have been busy using cubes to measure objects.  They have been using the language of taller and shorter to compare heights and longer and shorter to compare lengths.

Indoor ‘Cross Country!’

Even though we couldn’t go off site on Friday for cross country club, the children really enjoyed the indoor circuit training instead.

Class 3 Homework – due in Friday 18th November

Class 3 have been set some homework on Purple mash this week. Their task is to write a book review of the story ‘The Twits’ which we have been reading together in class.

I have given out paper copies to children who needed it and have attached a copy below.

Mexican Day!

Dear Parents,

As part of our geography topic on comparing people and places, Class 4 have been learning about Mexico. We would like to have a Mexican Fiesta and Feast Day in school on Wednesday 30th November.  We would really appreciate it if the children could dress up for that day in some Mexican themed clothes.  For example :  ponchos, sombreros and/or lots of brightly coloured clothes.

We are looking forward to seeing what the children wear and to having lots of fun that day.  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Many thanks for your support,

Samantha Foster

Weekly News 11.11.16

Thank You

We just wanted to say a big thank you for all of your donations towards our charity fundraising efforts over the past couple of weeks.  Our Foundation governor, Mrs Wendy Horan, will be collecting the shoe boxes at the beginning of next week and she has asked us to pass on her thanks for the super response to this year’s Operation Christmas Child appeal.

Thank you also for all the purchases of poppies and the British Legion merchandise.  This is an amazing response and we will let you know how much was raised once the local representative has been to collect the money.

Children in Need – Friday 18th November

cin

This year’s theme is spots so it would be wonderful if children could find something spotty to wear to school next Friday! Don’t worry if you don’t have something spotty to wear just come in something colourful.  As in previous charity dressing-up days, we would like children to pay a 50p donation for wearing non-uniform and all monies raised will be sent to Children In Need.

We are not doing a cake sale this year, as we recognise that parents have already donated considerably this term through the shoe boxes, baking cakes for the disco or for purchasing fundraising products and we are extremely grateful for this.  However, we do have some official Pudsey key rings and Pudsey ears for sale at the Office.

We can’t wait to see lots of spotty outfits next Friday!

Letters home this week

FOBs Film Night – whole school

Reminder

All flu letters must be returned by the end of next week, regardless of whether you want your child to have the immunisation or not.

Have a nice weekend.
