This week in English, Class 2 have continued to look at recounts. We have read the story ‘Oh no, George’ and discussed how to change it from present tense to past tense, recapped on using exclamation marks and began to plan our own recount of our holidays.

Year 1: Have been finding one more and one less than a number and recapped on number bonds to 10 and 20.

Year 2: Have been using number facts and place value to solve problems.

This week the children explored a range of different toys and objects, whilst they were playing they were encouraged to say whether the toy/object needed to be pushed or pulled to make it move.

History

After an introduction to our topic ‘Castles’ last week, this week the children have been finding out who built the first castles in the UK and why they built them.

post office role play

We have started our new topic of The Jolly Postman and Friends, by looking at what a Post person does and what happens in a post office.  The children have started to use our post office area and have lots of ideas about what they want in there.

We wondered if mums and dads could help us out?  Here is our wish list:

*stamps (used ones cut off envelopes)

* stamper to frank the mail with

*post person dress up clothes

* post bag

*unusual shaped parcels for the children to deliver

*old bit of stationery that could be donated

If you have anything that you think would be suitable, Class 1 would be very grateful.

Thank you  🙂

Phonics

Last week and this week the children have looked at the following digraphs and trigraph and have learnt a mnemonic for each one  :

ar – start the car

or – shut the door

air – That’s not fair

ir – whirl and twirl

ou – shout it out

oy – toy for a boy

ea – cup of tea

oi – spoil the boy

The children have also segmented and blended words with these sounds in.

Please find attached a copy of Set 2 sounds and the the words we have covered.

Class 3 Weekly Update

Happy New Year! We’ve got straight back to it in Class 3 this week, here are some of the things we’ve been getting up to….

English: We have been doing some grammar work this week, focusing on adverbs for time and place as well as adverbial phrases. We have been learning what these are and have been practising being able to spot them within a sentence. The children have had a go at improving sentences by adding these and will be challenged to create some of their own on Monday.

Maths: We have continued to practise the grid method for multiplication and some children have moved onto the expanded column method. The children have begun to apply their methods to some worded problems this week. We moved onto division today, where we have revised how to use a number line to help us and will continue this next week.

History: The children have been introduced to their new topic about The Romans. They were all very excited and keen to tell me what they already know. We then spent some time looking through information books to get a general overview of The Romans and came up with some questions we would like to find the answers to throughout the term.

RE: We have just begun our incarnation unit which begins by looking at baptism. We have read  and watched clips from the ‘Miracle Maker’ of the baptism of Jesus and discussed how this can help us to understand Christian’s believes in the Trinity.

PE: The children have enjoyed doing some circuit training this week.

French: The children have been learning how to say parts of the body today and had great fun singing ‘Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’ in french.

Winter walk

The children in Class 1 went on a very cold and frosty Winter walk this afternoon.

Novel Study Freeze Frames

After reading chapter one of ‘After Tomorrow’, the children worked in pairs to freeze frame different things that happened.  They had to really think about the facial expressions and actions of the characters.
