Class 2 update

English

This week in English we started the story ‘Funnybones’ – the children have enjoyed listening to the story, rewriting the opening and role playing conversations between the skeletons.

Maths.

We have moved onto measures this week and have been focussing on measuring length. Year 1 have been measuring objects using non-standard units e.g. cubes and year 2 have been using cm and m to measure objects around the room. We have also been practising our estimating skills.

Please could year 2 continue to practise their times tables. I am sending home some more resources with the children tonight.

Science.

This week we have enjoyed discussing the effect Gravity has on objects – the children were given time to explore gravity with a bouncy ball in the hall. Then they drew pictures to show their findings.

History.

Continuing our topic on Castles, the children were shown pictures of a range of different castles in England. We discussed the different features of a castle e.g. drawbridge, portcullis, battlements, etc and then the children labelled pictures of castles with these features.

Spellings.

To be tested Friday 3rd February 2017.

Extra SATs Booster

Due to several Year 6 children taking part in the Sportshall Athletics at The Corbet on Monday after school, we are running an extra SATs Booster next week on Tuesday from 3:15 – 4:30.  This is so that the children who are taking part in the Corbet event do not miss out.  Children who come to SATs Booster on Monday are also welcome to attend on Tuesday, if they wish, but this is entirely optional.  The only thing we ask is that Year 6s attend at least one Booster session next week.

Thank to the Year 6s for agreeing to take part in the Sportshall athletics at the last minute – we are very grateful!

Car Park Safety

We have reminded children in school about being aware of moving vehicles in the car park. Please could you remind your child about staying close to you in the car park and not running in between/in front of/behind vehicles. Thank you.

Disabled Parking Spaces

We have several disabled parking spaces on site and it is vital that these are kept clear for use by adults with blue badges or mobility difficulties. Please do not use these spaces unless you are a blue badge holder and/or have mobility difficulties.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this.

Class 2 Weekly update

English

This week we have discussed the importance of an introduction to stories and recounts and how they make the reader want to carry on reading. The children have practised writing their own introductions to a recount about a time they wish to share. We also recapped on the use of conjunctions to extend sentences.

Maths

Year 1: Recognising number bonds to 8 and 9 and learning how to double numbers.

Year 2: Using number facts to add and subtract and adding a single digit number to a two digit number, using 100 squares and number lines.

Phonics

Year 1: Exploring alternative pronunciation of the ‘i’ grapheme e.g. tin and mild, alternative pronunciation of the ‘o’ grapheme e.g. hot and don’t and alternative pronunciation of the ‘g’ grapheme e.g. gap and germ.

Year 2: Exploring words ending in ‘tion’ e.g. action and looking at words ending in ‘le’ e.g. kettle.

Science

The children investigated objects around the classroom that needed to be pushed or pulled to make them move. They then drew their findings and labelled and described them.

History

The children were shown two types of castles this week – motte and bailey castles made from wood and keep and bailey castles made from stone. They looked at the differences and discussed which would be easier to build and which would be easier to defend.

Hunchback of Notre Dame Performance

Earlier this week, a professional theatre group visited school to perform the Hunchback of Notre Dame for the whole school.  The children really enjoyed the show and immersed themselves fully in “It’s behind you!”, “Oh no he isn’t!” and also a lot of booing and applause!  Well done to all the children for being such a fantastic audience.
