Class 4 update

English

We are continuing our work on ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’.  This week the children wrote poems about storms.  They had some great ideas for description.  Today they role played a conversation from the story between the two main characters.  Next week they will be working on play scripts.

Maths

We have done lots of work on fractions recently including adding and subtracting fractions and conversion of fractions.  This week we revised factors and multiples.

Science

The children completed their river rangers work last week with the Shropshire Wildlife Trust.  They learnt about sustainable urban drainage systems and have begun to think about the plants we need in our own school pond.  The children looked at insects in the wildlife area this week and drew some detailed illustrations of the creatures they found.

Swimming

Just to let year 5 parents know, we are doing life saving skills next week in swimming so the children need a T-shirt as well as their usual swimming kit please.

Parent/Guardian Surveys

Thank you if you have already returned your parent survey and for the positive comments and suggestions made. Your views are very important to us and help us to plan for the forthcoming year. Please could all surveys be returned by Friday 23rd June so that we can collate and publish the results the following week.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Sports Day

We are looking forward to Sports Day next week and warm weather is forecast so children will need to bring a hat and drink.  If you are having trouble finding the correct colour t-shirt for your child to wear, please speak to a member of staff and we will sort something out for them as we have done in previous years.  If you would like school to provide your child with sun cream, please return the permission slip if you have not already done so.

Football Club – Classes 1 and 2

From next Thursday 22nd June until the end of term, there will be football club for children in Class 1 and 2 from 3:15 to 4:30. This will not show on the clubs list until Monday. We are grateful to Alfie W’s dad for offering to run the club and a member of staff will also be present.

Forest School – 14.6.17

In Forest School this week, we began the session thinking about how animals and insects camouflage against predators. We had ‘woolly worms’ and walked around the site to try and camouflage our worms, this led to a discussion about how some insects are brightly coloured and have other ways to protect themselves e.g. poisonous or sting. The children then enjoyed searching the forest school site for mini beasts, we looked in lots of different places e.g. under logs, in the bushes and on trees. We had a great time identifying the creepy crawlies on our identification cards and using magnifying sheets to get a closer look.

Some photos for you to enjoy…

Class 2 weekly update

English – This week, in English, Miss Hughes has been teaching the children about poetry. They have been looking at a range of different poems, performing their favourite poems and writing their own versions using adjectives and rhyming words.

Maths – We have been focussing on division this week. Year 1 children have been sharing objects between 2, 5 and 10 and recapping how to write division sentences. Year 2 children have been recalling their times tables to help solve division problems, learning how to use number lines to divide and recognising that division is the inverse (opposite) of multiplication.

PE – Class 2 have been practising for Sports Day in their PE lessons this week. They are very excited for sports day on Wednesday and have brought home a letter explaining which team they are in and what colour we would like them to wear.

Spellings – To be tested on Friday 23rd June 2017.

Class 3 Weekly Update

English: This week the children have been learning about diaries. We have read some examples of diaries and spotted some of the features within them. We are going to be writing our own diary in character as Arietty from The Borrowers, writing about what it is like to live in the school wildlife area. We have verbally planned and written some ideas down this week, ready to write it on Monday.

Maths: We began the week with some work on multiplication and division. The Year 3 children were learning how to use their multiplication skills to do some scaling up word problems. The Year 4 children were learning about factors – what they are and how to find them. We then all moved on to learning about equivalent fractions. At this stage the children are using visual images to find equivalent fractions but some have begun to see the pattern in the numbers already, which is very impressive.

Science: We have started our new unit on plants. The children have learned the names of different parts of the plants and have created a leaflet explaining their function.

D&T: We have continued to make our packaging for our confectionery product.

PE: We have spent some time doing sports day practise this week as well as having our usual tennis lesson.

RE: We have begun our new topic on ‘creation’ – the children have done an activity where they have gone outside to notice and appreciate things in nature.

Just another note to say well done to all those children involved in the choir competition this week. You have worked very hard and done yourselves and us proud!

Well Done Choir!!

This is just to say a huge WELL DONE to all the children involved in the Concord Choir competition. You did a fantastic job and made us all very proud! Thank you for your hard work and dedication – you had fantastic comments from the judges who really enjoyed your performance. Well done! Here’s to next year!

Gardening Day – Thank You

A big thank you to everyone who helped at the gardening day on Saturday.  The samba drums (purchased with some of the funds raised from the Mini Marathon) were installed, most of the bark paths were laid and a general tidy up was had so that most of the wildlife garden can now be used by the children during the school day.  Lots more painting was done as well, until the showers arrived late afternoon!

We found time during the day for everyone to look in the new eco-room and it definitely got the ‘wow’ reaction that we had hoped for! All classes will start to use the room over the next couple of weeks for Science and Design and Technology.

Another working party is planned for Saturday 24th June, which will probably be our final gardening day, and then the whole area will be finished and everything will be ready to use. We hope you can spare a couple of hours to come along and thank you to Graham, the FOBS ladies and other parents who have already offered their time.  We then just have to find a date for the official opening!
