Class 2 World Book Day

On World Book Day, Class 2 were introduced to our new class story ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’. We had a day based around this story, completing lots of fun activities. We began with listening to the story, followed by acting the story out in a group and presenting it to the rest of the class. We then thought about the Tiger’s diet and decided he didn’t have a very healthy diet as he ate lots of food from Sophie’s house. The children were given the task of designing a healthy meal for the tiger and drawing their design onto a paper plate. Before lunch we decorated biscuits ready for our Tiger Tea Party in the afternoon. The children had a lovely afternoon, decorating a tiger mask and eating lots of goodies at the tiger tea party.

School is OPEN Monday 5th March

School will be open on Monday 5th March, 2018. Please can all parents/guardians and children use the pathways that are snow/ice-free and avoid any areas that may still be snow-covered.

Thank you

Class 2 Weekly Update

English: Blue group and Red group have worked within Read Write Inc groups Monday-Wednesday, whilst Green and Yellow group have worked independently on Little Red Riding Hood. These children have been writing questions to interview the Big Bad Wolf and then carrying out their interviews using the Ipads to record themselves. On Thursday (World Book Day), the children were introduced to our new story, ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’, we will focus on this story on Thursdays and Fridays. They began acting out the story and performing their presentation to the rest of the class, we then had a lovely Tiger Tea Party in the afternoon (photos to follow on Monday).

Maths: In Maths, the children have continued with place value and comparing numbers using the more than, less than and equal too symbols.

Science: The children investigated using magnets on Tuesday. They were challenged to find magnetic objects within the classroom and then had to draw and label these. On Thursday they decided that the Tiger in our new story does not have a very good diet as he eats everything! We designed a healthy, balanced meal for him and drew these ideas onto paper plates.

RE: Our question in RE, this half term is, ‘Why does Easter matter to Christians?’ The children began by thinking about Springtime and how we recognise signs of Spring. They then listened to the Easter story and discussed the sad and happy parts of the story.

Phonics: In phonics, we are now recapping on sounds as we have covered all of set 2 and 3 sounds in the Read Write Inc program. The children are now having phonics lessons focusing mainly on the spellings of different sounds and looking closely at real and nonsense words in preparation for the Phonics Screening test in June.

Spellings: We will complete our spelling test on Monday due to the snow day on Friday.

The new spellings for this week are to be tested on Friday 9th March 2018.

Class 4 weekly update

English – This week’s focus has been on play scripts.  The children have been role playing a scene from the book, ‘The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe’, thinking of ways to develop their ideas.  Then they looked at the main features of a play script and explored the layout conventions.  They used an extract from the chapter and changed the text into a play script and used this as a basis to draft, edit and improve their own ideas.

Maths – They have been focusing on number this week – decimals and fractions.  They have used a place value grid to make numbers with up to 2 and 3 decimal places and understanding the value of each digit.  Then they have been looking at decimals as fractions, concentrating on more complex decimal numbers (0.96, 0.03, 0.27) and numbers greater than 1.  Some children have had a go at recording the numbers in multiple representations, including expanded form and in words.

Science – The children completed an investigation about parachutes and tested a range of materials, size of materials and length of parachute string to find out which key features made the most effective parachute.  They had lots of good ideas about gravity and air resistance to support their ideas and findings.

Computing – They have been looking at multimedia and have started exploring multimedia.

Art – They have been looking at structures of a range of buildings.

Everyone made a fantastic effort dressing up for World Book Day and it was wonderful to see all their outfits.  Thank you for all your efforts with this. We spent some time looking at and talking about our favourite books which was lovely to hear.

I hope you all have a great weekend and stay safe in the snow!

Class 5 weekly update 02.03.18

English

This week we have revisited diary writing. Children have created some excellent diary entries in role as Lucky from our novel Phoenix.  Children’s main focus was to infer to the reader the different emotions that Lucky was going through, by using carefully-chosen vocabulary and punctuation to enhance their writing. We will finish the diary entries on Monday, before starting a new unit on poetry.

Maths

At the start of the week children solved problems involving time, which included using bus/train timetables and converting between different units of times to answer word problems. We have now started a new unit on area and perimeter, involving rectilinear (compound) shapes. Next week we will focus on both area and perimeter, including using formulae to find the area of triangles.

Geography

In Geography this week, children were finding the capital cities of the North American countries.  They recorded their information in a table and many extended their task by adding extra information such as population, the language spoken or famous landmarks. They will continue this next week before choosing one of the capital cities to research in further detail.

Art

On World Book Day, children designed their own front covers for our novel Phoenix. They produced some beautiful work which will be displayed alongside some of their English work.

PE

We started a new unit on gymnastics this week and had a fantastic first session using the wall apparatus, the ropes and other floor equipment. The children’s perseverance and pride in their achievements was wonderful to observe and we are looking forward to seeing their skills and confidence increase over the coming weeks.

Homework

Because of the snow closure, homework will be given out on Monday and due in on Friday 9th.

Year 6 SATs Booster

In SATs Booster this week, we focused on grammar and explored the different types of noun: proper, common, abstract and collective, as well as looking at singular and plural. We also revised different word classes including determiners. Next week’s after-school booster session will be maths-based.

Hope you all have a good weekend.
