Class 3 Weekly Update

English: This week the children have been doing English through their Geography work by creating a holiday brochure for a destination in the UK. The children began the week by researching a particular type of UK holiday – city break, scenic holiday, seaside holiday etc and they had to find out a place in the UK to suit this type of holiday, find out whereabouts in the UK it is, how you can get there and what you can do there. After researching we had a go at coming up with our own whole class holiday brochure before the children began writing their own. The Year 2 children have been focusing on using neat handwriting, using capital letters in the right places, making sure their spelling is correct and using questions and conjunctions in their sentences. The Year 3 children have been focusing on these things as well as trying to use powerful adjectives, prepositions and different sentence openers in their work.

Some children have been completing the Read, Write, Inc programme this week and have done some fantastic reading and writing relating to a pirate named Black Hat Bob. They have focused on their handwriting, spelling, capital letters and punctuation as well as using adjectives and conjunctions.

Maths: We have continued our work on shape this week but have moved onto 3D shape. We have spent time exploring the names and properties of different 3D shapes – discussing the number of faces, the shapes of faces, the number of vertices, number of edges and the Year 3 children have also been learning how to identify if a shape is a prism. The children had great fun using modelling equipment to create their own 3D shapes and finding different ways of sorting the shapes according to their own criteria.

Science: The children have continued their work on forces and have been identifying the types of forces at work within different types of sport.

D&T: The children have decided on their final design for their scones and are very excited about making them next week!

RE: We have continued thinking about the Easter story and what this means to Christians.

PSHE: We have spent some time discussing friendships in PSHE this week, thinking carefully about how we should behave in different situations which we may find difficult.

Thank you for returning the slips to let us know who will be attending our British Afternoon Tea on Thursday 22nd March. If you still need to hand yours in please could you do so by Monday 19th March. Just to make it clear, the offer is open to any two family members  so Nannies, Grandpas, Aunties, Uncles etc are very welcome. We look forward to seeing you there!

Wednesday Clubs

Craft Club will not be running again (this week was the last session) and we would like to say a big thank you to Kerry for giving up her time over recent months to organise and run the club for us.

Next Wednesday there will be a combined Colouring and Computer Club but no Multi-sports Club, due to parent meetings taking place in the Hall.

From Wednesday 28th March, and after Easter, there will be: Colouring Club for Nursery, Reception, Years 1, 2 and 3, and Multi-sports for Years 4, 5 and 6. Thank you.

Today’s PE with the equipment

In today’s PE, the children showed great listening skills whilst having the gym equipment out. They had lots of fun exploring the equipment and worked well in groups and with a partner to support each other on each station.

Class 4 weekly news

English – Our focus this week has been  writing a set of instructions.  The children started off looking at what instructions are used for and highlighted the main features.  They then created a word bank of ‘rich vocabulary’ from the novel study (‘The Lion, the witch and wardrobe’) to create a pictorial timeline  to describe the children’s journey to the white witch’s house.  Then they used this information to plan, edit and publish their own set of instructions.  They all worked really hard on this to remember to use time connectives, bossy verbs and interesting adjectives.

Maths – They have been ordering and comparing numbers with up to 3 decimal places on a number line.  The year 4’s used a place value chart to help them divide one/two and three digit numbers by 10 and 100.  The year 5’s looked at percentages and representing these as decimals and fractions.

Geography – The children started their topic on ‘earthquakes’.  They looked into the key aspects of earthquakes and how they are caused by the plate tectonics.  They worked well in groups to represent the plates and the magma using broken up pieces of cups and a bowl of water.

Science – They completed an investigation into levers and made their own lever mechanism to test how well a load can be lifted using a smaller force.

RE – We started our topic about Easter.  They will be discussing the key question ‘Why do Christians call the day Jesus died Good Friday?’ over the next few weeks.  Today they listened to the story about ‘The Last Supper’ and discussed the betrayal of Judas to Jesus.  They also talked about the objects which represent the Last Supper and what they mean to the story.

Homework – handed out today – decimals/fractions/percentages.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Thomas

This week the children have been writing poetry based on part of ‘Phoenix.’  They have worked on using a range of poetic devices and powerful vocabulary to create impact and emotion.
