Class 5 Weekly Update 27.04.18

English

The children have continued their novel study of Goodnight Mister Tom. Their task this week was to produce a public information leaflet for host families to explain how to care for an evacuee. We have focused on using standard English and cohesive devices, including adverbial phrases, conjuctions and pronouns, and Class 5 have worked hard to produce some excellent pieces of formal writing.  Our grammar, punctuation and spelling work has included dictation activities to practise using adverbial phrases e.g. as a result, in addition, and spelling Year 5/6 words.

Maths

In Maths this week, we have continued our work on the properties of shapes. Children have applied their knowledge of angles in a triangle to solving problems involving special triangles and quadrilaterals and have ended the week constructing shapes with given angles and dimensions. Year 6s have also looked at the radius and diameter of circles and practised using a compass to construct circles of given diameters.

Science

Children have worked in small groups to explore some of their questions and hypotheses about shadows such as what affects the length and size of a shadow. This allowed them to reinforce work on angles, when discussing how the angle of the light source in relation to the object affects the shadow produced. Next lesson we will start to look at reflections and refraction of light.

P.E.

Whilst the Year 5s were at swimming, Year 6s have practised different volleyball skills in small groups and they ended the session evaluating the skills shown by each group. They have also continued their tennis sessions with Mr Creffield.

R.E.

Children had an extended session with Mrs J this week to allow them time to discuss and explore the resurrection in more depth.  We are hoping to create a display of their work over the next few weeks, to showcase their ideas and achievements.

Year 6 Booster

Just a reminder that Year 6 Booster is running every Monday after school until 4:30 to help prepare children for the SATs in the middle of May. I have attached the presentation again from the Year 6 parent meeting last week.

SATs 2018 Presentation to parents

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Forest School Session 2

We had a fantastic morning looking for mini beasts! The children were really careful with the bugs and made sure they placed them back where they found them.

Gardening Day 28.04.18

Can you spare a few hours this Saturday morning on 28th April? If so, we would love you to join us at our first  gardening party of the year

We are hoping to paint the fence at the front of the Early Years playground (weather-permitting) and have a general tidy-up in the wildlife garden and flower beds. If you are able to spare a couple of hours between 10:00 and 1:00, please write your name(s) on the contact list in reception or speak to myself or Catherine Orrell.  We are trying to provide refreshments and we will let you know more details at the end of the week.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Class 5 Weekly Update 20.04.18

English

This week the children began reading our new novel study text ‘Goodnight Mister Tom.’  This week they have focussed on describing the two main characters using evidence and quotations from the story.

Maths

The children have been working on measuring and calculating angles in different shapes.

History

We began our World War II topic by imagining we were sitting in an air raid shelter in 1940.  We discussed how it felt and what it would have been like.  The children have also begun to learn which countries were involved in the war and what the events were that led up to the Battle of Britain.

Science

This week the children began their new science topic on ‘light.’  They explored what they knew already about different light sources, how we see light and how shadows are formed.  They then drew diagrams to show how shadows are created when an object blocks light and how we see this.

Class 2 Weekly Update

Well done for a great first week back Class 2!

English: We have continued with Read Write Inc this week and some groups have been writing seaside poems independently. We have also started our new class book ‘Owl Babies’. The children have been acting out the story, discussing the owl’s feelings at different stages and sequencing the story.

Maths: The children have been counting in twos, fives and tens this week and grouping objects to find the answer to statements such as ‘how many lots of…?’ or ‘how many groups of…?

Science: We have started our new Science topic this week ‘Animals including humans’. The children began with drawing and labelling their body parts.

History: We have made a good start on our new topic ‘Seaside Holidays – past and present’. The children made seaside pictures out of a range of materials, researched different seaside animals in information books and watched a Punch and Judy show. They then had a go at performing their own puppet show in groups.

Art: We made seaside collages today. The children were brilliant at ripping up their different textured paper and placing them into a seaside scenery.

Spellings: Spellings to be tested Friday 27th April 2018.

Spellings 20.4.18

The children have been given a Forest School letter today and a letter about our class trip to the Cheshire Ice Cream Farm. Please come and see me if these did not make it home and I can give you another copy.

Have a good weekend!

Miss Edwards

Class 4 weekly update

English – We have started our new novel study for the term, ‘Who let the Gods out?’ by Maz Evans.  The children have been looking at signs of the zodiac and making models of their own constellation and writing a description about their own their own sign.  We have started reading the book and the children have enjoyed it so far.  They wrote a character description based on the main character, Elliot and were asked to include lots of interesting adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions and similes/metaphors to add detail to their sentences.

Maths – We have started a new block on decimals.  Some children have been making a whole and writing decimals by understanding the value of each digit.  Other children have been adding decimals within 1 and subtracting decimals within 1 using the column method to work out their answers.

Topic – We have started our new topic on ‘Ancient Greece’ and discussed in groups/as a class about what they know about Greece.  They had lots of ideas and enjoyed talking about their own experiences of the country.

Art – We have started looking at Greek tragedy and comedy masks and have designed our own masks to start making next week.

Weekly News 20th April 2018

It has been a lovely first week back and the children seem to have settled in quickly. Now that the weather is warming up, please can your child have suncream applied before coming to school and they may also want to bring a sun hat. Please can you also ensure that your child’s sweatshirt/cardigan is labelled with their name so that uniform can be matched up with the right owner if it is left on the field at break-times.

Disabled parking spaces

It is important that the disabled parking spaces are only used by adults with a disabled badge or where permission to use one of the spaces (because of mobility difficulties) has been given by Mrs Johnson.

Letters out this week

Class 2 trip letter

Parent lunch invite – Nursery and Class 1

Class 2 Forest School letter

Sun cream permission letter

Swimming letter – Year 3 and 6

Hope you have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Johnson

Maths – making 5

This week the children have concentrated on the number 5.  We have explored what makes 5 and had to explain and prove that it is right.  The children were encouraged to use their number knowledge and not count.

For example, the children looked at Jack’s magic beans, on one side they were silver an don the other they were brown.  The children explored shaking a pot and seeing which side they landed.  We had some really good explanations, including – ‘There are still 5 because there are 2 silver and 3 brown beans, 2 and 3 makes 5!’
