Head of School Message

Dear parents/carers,

We’ve reached the end of our first week back, and what a lovely week it’s been! The children have come back full of smiles, stories, and an impressive amount of energy for February, and it’s been a real pleasure seeing everyone settle in so quickly.

We had our very first Running Club session this morning, and I have to say—it was a brilliant start. A huge well done to all the children who turned up bright and early, ready to run, jog, hop, skip their way around. If this morning is anything to go by, Fridays are going to become a very lively start to the day!

On Thursday, I had the chance to attend a Flourish Education training session. It was all about the unique strengths of small schools and how they can truly thrive at the heart of their communities. I found myself encouraged by all the ways this already rings true here at Bicton—our sense of togetherness, the way families support the school, and how our children really are known as individuals. It was a lovely reminder of just how special our little school is.

Parent–teacher consultation bookings have now gone live, so hopefully everyone has managed to get a time that works for them. If not, just let the office know and we will arrange an alternative date.

Please have a look at the Diary Dates posted this week.  I hope that by giving you these dates well in advance, it gives you chance to make any arrangements you need to.

All in all, it’s been a really positive start to the half term. Thank you for your continued support, the friendly chats at the gate, and the general cheerfulness that makes the school such a wonderful place to be!

Wishing you all a restful weekend.

Mrs Mavin

On Thursday, Year 5 and Year 6 visited the church to find out what Lent is and how it is celebrated.

FOBS Update

We hope you all had a fantastic half-term and are looking forward to more fabulous FOBS events.

The children had an amazing time at the Valentine’s Day disco, and we raised a massive £552.54!!!! This is an amazing start toward our target of £30,000, but it would take a lot of discos to get us there, so we would be SUPER GRATEFUL for you to fundraise with us, for us, or indeed secure some sponsorship.

If you have ideas about fundraising, please let us know.  All ideas are very welcome! If you’d like to get involved and join FOBS or just have some ideas to share, please get in touch.  We’re now on Instagram and you can message us there!  https://www.instagram.com/friends_of_bicton?igsh=MW5vd2x2Z2tncW9obg%3D%3D&utm_source=qr

We also want to say a HUGE THANK YOU for supporting our World Book Day costume and book sale, especially on such a wet and windy afternoon.  It was a small event, but we raised £45 in less than an hour, so well done!!!

Upcoming events:

MARCH

Mothering Sunday

Show how much you love your mother, grandmother, aunt, sister or whomever (!) by purchasing a potted sunflower seedling for £1.  Each plant will be accompanied by a free card of your choosing.  Plants will be on sale the week of 9 March with final payments by Thursday, 12 March.  Plants and cards will be handed out in class on Friday, 13 March, ready for gifting on Sunday, 15 March.

***As a follow up to the sale of the sunflower seedling, we will be holding a competition for whose plant grows the tallest by the Summer Fete in June.  The winner will be announced at the fete!

Huge thanks to Luke (and his mum Louise) who potted hundreds of sunflower seeds over the half-term and are lovingly tending to and talking to them ready for you all to take home!

APRIL

Springo

Put a little spring in your step with a fun and fantastic evening of Bingo at the school hall.  Date TBC.

Resale shop

In addition to meeting our fundraising goal, FOBS is keen to promote sustainability and affordability.  If your child has outgrown their school uniform, any clothes or shoes, please consider donating them to FOBS. We will have a sale afterschool before the next half-term.  It’s a good opportunity to have a clear out and maybe grab a few new things for the Easter break!

Sponsorship

We have a big fundraising goal for the year and will need the help of generous business sponsors to reach our target.  If you would be willing to contact sponsors or indeed provide sponsorship through your own business or employer, we would be very grateful!

As a bit of encouragement for you all, Ian (dad of Rosalie and Angus) is taking part in the Shropshire Triathlon on 13 June 2026 and hoping to raise £1000 for FOBS.  Please support him and if you have any runs, triathlons, marathons, or anything else coming up, we would love if you would consider sponsoring FOBS as your chosen charity (registered charity no 1093376).

Miss Merricks Uganda Update

Hi everyone,

So far its been an absolutely incredible experience, it has been both eye opening and inspiring. Uganda is a beautiful country and everyone has been very welcoming.
During my time here, I have been in the local community where we were shown how coffee is made traditionally by the local women. It was very interesting to see how they do everything from preparing the beans to roasting and grinding them by hand. It really made me appreciate how much work goes into something we use daily. I have also had a go at tea picking and got the opportunity to work in the fields with some of the local workers.
I have also been able to go into the local community to deliver all of the donated bras and sanitary products. These donations were greatly needed and very appreciated. It was great to see the impact of the donations.
I have spent some time at the One Love Project where I got to meet all of the wonderful children there. It was incredible to see how enthusiastic the children are about learning and how eager they are to absorb all information. Their standard of education is phenomenal and utterly impressive. I am very excited for the rest of my time at the school.
I would like to say thank you to everyone who donated, I was able to fill two large suitcases and take everything that was donated with me. Together with the other people on the trip we were able to donate 414kg worth of clothes, shoes, toiletries, etc.
Below is the donation link where money raised goes directly to the school. Every penny directly to benefit all the children in their care.
