Head of School Message

Dear parents/carers,

Welcome back everyone! And a special welcome to our 12 new Reception children who have done their first 2 days at school this week! They have settled well into the school routines and the new Year 1s have thoroughly enjoyed showing them how things are done in Willow Class. We are very proud of all of you.

The older children have also transitioned brilliantly back into school life and it has been lovely to see them all again and hear about their summer holidays. We are looking forward to a year of opportunity, fun, growth and learning and we are so grateful we have the support of our amazing parent community here at Bicton.

We have had some technology-related teething issues at the start of this term and there have been issues with our lunch payment system. If you have added money to your child’s dinner account and you are being notified that you have a negative balance, please ignore this. Mrs Neal is working hard to resolve this with the IT team. Please ensure you have added money to your account to pay for lunches if your child is in Nursery or Years 3-6 and you are not in receipt of Free School Meals.

The first whole school event this term is our Harvest service on Wednesday 7th October 9.30am at Bicton Church. The children will be singing some songs and Reverend Hannah will be leading a sermon and it would be wonderful to see lots of parents/carers there to support. We welcome any donations of non-perishable food or toiletry items to the School Office for a donation to the Shrewsbury Food Hub.

Our First Whole School Worship

We gathered as a whole school for the first time this academic year to think about our school value of ‘Love’ and how we can add sweetness to each others lives. Well done everyone for joining in so enthusiastically!

Support at Home

At Bicton, we recognise that children work incredibly hard during the school day. We believe that time outside school should provide opportunities for family life, rest, play, hobbies, sport, and developing wider interests.

Research suggests that for primary-aged children, the impact of traditional homework on academic achievement is limited, particularly when compared to the benefits of high-quality teaching during the school day. Rather than sending home regular worksheets or tasks, we focus on making every moment of learning in school count.

That does not mean learning stops when children leave the classroom. Families play a vital role in supporting children’s development, and there are many simple and enjoyable ways to help at home:

Read together regularly and talk about books, stories and characters.
Listen to your child read and encourage a love of reading.
Practise number facts and times tables through games and everyday activities.
Talk together about the world around them, current events, nature and their interests.
Encourage independence by involving children in cooking, shopping, organising belongings and solving problems.
Enjoy educational visits to libraries, museums, parks and places of interest when possible.

We believe that children learn best when school and home work together. Thank you for all the ways you support your child’s learning, wellbeing and development.

Bicton Junior Parkrun Takeover!

We are excited to announce that Bicton School will be taking over the Junior Parkrun on Sunday 4th October at The Quarry Park!

This fantastic community event has been organised by parent Libby Wynne, and we would love to see as many Bicton families as possible getting involved, whether by running, volunteering, or cheering on participants. Please wear clothes suitable for running in or your Bicton PE kit!

📍 Location: The Quarry Park
📅 Date: Sunday 4th October
🕘 Meet: 8.45am for a 9.00am start

Junior Parkrun is a free, fun, and friendly 2km event for children aged 4-14. It is a wonderful opportunity to be active, support one another, and represent our school in the local community.
