Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

We aim to meet the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs and /or disabilities to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their specific needs, make the best possible progress in school.

A new duty in the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Code of Practice was placed on Local Authorities from September 2014 and this is being referred to as the ‘Local Offer.’ This means that Local Authorities must publish, in one place, information about provision they expect to be available in their area for children and young people from 0 to 25 years of age who have Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities.

Outlined in our SEN Information Report are the types of things we do to support all of our children with additional needs, as well as targeted types of support that we are able to provide in relation to specific areas of SEN. The information is general; each child is an individual and will receive unique provision and resources where necessary.

The Special Educational Needs Code of Practice takes account of the Special Educational Needs of children within the school as recommended by the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act 2001. It places a duty on Local Authorities to ensure that children with Special Educational Needs have educational provision matched to their special needs. According to the Code of Practice, the school works in partnership with parents, pupils and other Agencies as necessary. Parents of children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities are provided with services offering advice and information (e.g. the Parent Partnership Service, telephone 01952 457176.)

The Governor with responsibility for SEND is Mrs Marian Owonoiyi and the SENDCo is Mr Patrick Harris.  Pupil success is evident in their access to all aspects of the curriculum and contribution to school life. Progress and success is monitored through individual curricular targets (Pupil Profiles,) termly class assessments and the tracking of progress. Progress is due to the commitment of all staff and the additional support through individual/group interventions, lunchtime support and provision through the School Accessibility Plan. Bicton School has been accredited with the Silver award for SEND provision.

For further enquiries, please contact Mrs Juilie Ball (Executive Headteacher) or Mrs Marian Owoniyi (SEND Governor).
